Machine learning (ML) and genetic algorithm (GA) are well known techniques which can be used to calibrate environmental models. this paper investigates the calibration of the 2-D horizontal, vertically mixed lake models OneLay and PolTra using ML and GA routines. A GA was used jointly with the Open Modelling Interface (OpenMI) wrapper approach on a single powerful server. Explicit and implicit gridded approaches with the Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) learning were used as ML techniques. Monte Carlo simulations were used to generate the model input parameters for explicit and implicit gridding. parallel computing using Shared Hierarchical Academic computing Network (SHARCNET) was used for explicit and implicit gridded approach calibration.

A sand-dust numerical model coupled with MM5(PSU/NCAR mesoscale model)-CUCSDust (CMA Unified Chemistry System-Dust) is introduced. CUCSDust includes such detail physical processes as dust production, transport, growth, coagulation, dry and wet deposition, which can simulate and forecast the initial and sand-dust concentration of sand and dust storm. A parallel scheme is also designed to reduce the run-time which is most important for real-time forecasting. Based on CUCSDust, a numerical model forecasting system is established in northeast Asia, and is applied to China Meteorological Administration (CMA) for operational prediction of sand and dust storm from March, 2006. there were 31 storms occurred in northeast Asian in 2006 and the system nicely predicted 29 storms. A prediction result of severe sand and dust storm occurred in 26-28, March, 2006 is chosen, which shows no difference for sand-dust spatial distribution between model outputs and remote sensing monitoring imagers and indicates that the model system has the capability of real-time forecasting sand and dust storm in northeast Asia.

the evolution of concentration values in a turbulent flow is quantified by the probability density function (PDF) of concentration or more simply by the expected mass fraction function (EMF). It is convenient to use some lower-order moments to approximate the PDF or EMF. In this paper a particularly simple representation of these moments is explored. Concentration measurements using planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) are made over the cross-section of a fluorescent plume emanating from a point source in a grid-turbulence flow in a water tunnel. It is observed that the distributed moments across the plume are determined from a 'local' concentration scale and the mean concentration profile. the moments of the EMF appear to be related to the center-line moments and the EMF to have a simple, self-similar form when scaled with the center-line mean concentration.

the autonomic management of large-scale distributed systems now allows performance improvement, availability, and security, while simultaneously reducing the effort and skills required of system administrators. One way that systems can support these abilities is by relying on a continuous monitoring service to keep track of the states of the targeted systems. However, it is challenging to achieve both scalability and high accuracy when dealing with huge amounts of distributed and time-varying metrics in large-scale production systems. Additionally, most of the monitoring services are designed to provide general resource information and do not consider specific information for higher-level services, lacking important control capabilities. In this context, a dynamic adaptation layer is required, to be able to reactive and proactive deal with detected or predicted conditions. In this paper, we present a prediction architecture developed within the MonALISA monitoring framework, providing methods for estimating future values for different parameters on various periods of time. the predictions are used to enhance the self-adaptive behavior of applications and to minimize continuous monitoring costs. We illustrate our work as an efficient strategy to save power in wireless sensor networks by reducing the data traffic and thus maximizing the network lifetime. © 2010 IEEE.

Debugging parallel programs is an order of magnitudemore complex than sequential ones, and yet, most parallel debuggers provide little extra functionality than their sequential counterparts. this problem becomes more serious as computational codes become more complex, involving larger data structures, and as the machines become larger. Peta-scale machines consisting of millions of cores pose a significant challenge for existing techniques. We argue that debugging must become more data-centric, and believe that "assertions" provide a useful model. Assertions allow a user to declare their expectations about the program state as a whole rather than focusing on that of only a single process state. Previously, we have implemented a special type of assertion that supports debugging applications as they evolve or are ported to different platforms. they allow a user to compare the state of one program against another reference version. these 'relative debugging' assertions, whilst powerful, pose significant implementation challenges for large peta-scale machines. In this paper we discuss a hashing technique that provides a scalable solution for very large problems on very large machines. We illustrate the scheme on 65k cores of Kraken, a Cray XT5 at the University of Tennessee. Copyright 2010 ACM.

Mobility control for achieving optimal configuration in wireless sensor networks

Recent work in wireless sensor networks, or simply called WSNs, has drawn attention to the mobility capability of each node. In Stojmenovic and Lin (IEEE Trans parallel Distrib Syst 12: 1023-1032, 2001). it is proved that the optimal positions of the relay nodes along a active flow must lie entirely oil the line between the source and destination with each node spaced evenly along such a line. Based oil this, we propose two practical solutions to control the relay nodes in WSNs to approach their optimal positions in the local relative coordinate system. One uses one-hop neighbor information and the other one uses two-hop neighbor information. Basically, each relay node will approach the midpoint oil the line composed of neighbors. For the latter control scheme, we also discuss Its different implementation with outdated two-hop neighbor information (lagged by one-round neighbor information exchange and update). this is all improvement since given nodes only reuse the two-hop neighbor information previously saved at its one-hop neighbors and does not require any extra neighbor information collection. All the new methods prevent oscillations by demanding minimal moving distance per round (MDPR), otherwise the node does not move. Unlike the one presented in Goldenberg et in. (Proceedings of the 5th ACM international symposium Oil Mobile Ad Hoc Networking and computing (Mobihoc'04), pp 163-174 2004) using Only one-hop neighbor information. Our methods win converge more quickly. the experimental results Show a Substantial improvement oil the speed of,achieving the optimal Configuration and the total moving distance of nodes.

Scientific applications are striving to accurately simulate multiple interacting physical processes that comprise complex phenomena being modeled. Efficient and scalable parallel implementations of these coupled simulations present challenging interaction and coordination requirements, especially when the coupled physical processes are computationally heterogeneous and progress at different speeds. In this paper, we present the design, implementation and evaluation of a memory-to-memory coupling framework for coupled scientific simulations on high-performance parallel computing platforms. the framework is driven by the coupling requirements of the Center for Plasma Edge Simulation, and it provides simple coupling abstractions as well as efficient asynchronous (RDMA-based) memory-to-memory data transport mechanisms that complement existing parallel programming systems and data sharing frameworks. the framework enables flexible coupling behaviors that are asynchronous in time and space, and it supports dynamic coupling between heterogeneous simulation processes without enforcing any synchronization constraints. We evaluate the performance and scalability of the coupling framework using a specific coupling scenario, on the Jaguar Cray XT5 system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. © 2010 IEEE.

Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) is an emerging data technology that complements collective intelligence such as that identified in the Semantic Web by visualising the hidden meaning in disparate and distributed data. the paper demonstrates the discovery of these novel semantics through a set of FCA open source software tools FcaBedrock and In-Close that were developed by the authors. these tools add computational intelligence by converting data into a Boolean form called a Formal Context, prepare this data for analysis by creating focused and noise-free sub-Contexts and then analyse the prepared data using a visualisation called a Concept Lattice. the Formal Concepts thus visualised highlight how data itself contains meaning, and how FCA tools thereby extract data's inherent semantics. the paper describes how this will be further developed in a project called CUBIST, to provide in-data-warehouse visual analytics for RDF-based triple stores. © 2010 IEEE.

In the context of the prosperous development of Proteomics in life science, protein quantification, especially these based on Mass Spectrometry (short for MS) method, becomes an essential part of research. In our previous work, we developed a new software package called QuantWiz for high performance Liquid Chromatography (short for LC)-MS-based label-free protein quantification. We solved those problems of portability, applicability and longtime running existed in other software for protein quantification based on MS method. In this paper, we first compared the LC-MS-based label-free protein quantification accuracy of QuantWiz with the well-known Census software package. then we designed and implemented a distributed memory version parallel algorithm for QuantWiz. Finally, we performed scalability testing of our new parallel algorithm and showed that our new parallel algorithm can scale up to 512 processes on Dawning 5000A. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper the development and testing of AgroHydroLogos is presented, which is a new spatially distributed, continuous hydrological model. the model was developed as an extension of the ESRI ArcGIS Geographical Information Systems' software package. It calculates, on a daily basis, the main hydrological balance components, and other important parameters, including plants water stress and irrigation water needs. Its conceptual scheme was based on simplified but well established methods for the simulation of the various hydrological processes. the hydrological model is being developed using object oriented programming techniques, and its Graphical User Interface is very easy to use and it follows the standard ArcGIS software extensions form. the model was tested in a Mediterranean experimental watershed in Greece. the final conclusion is that AgroHydroLogos can produce valuable information concerning agricultural water management;it can also produce important information for the assessment of climate change impacts and for the evaluation of various adaptation and mitigation strategies.
