A simulator for adaptive parallel applications

Dynamically allocating computing nodes to parallel applications is a promising technique for improving the utilization of cluster resources. Detailed simulations can help identify allocation strategies and problem decomposition parameters that increase the efficiency of parallel applications. We describe a simulation framework supporting dynamic node allocation which, given a simple cluster model, predicts the running time of parallel applications taking CPU and network sharing into account. Simulations can be carried out without needing to modify the application code. thanks to partial direct execution, simulation times and memory requirements are reduced. In partial direct execution simulations, the application's parallel behavior is retrieved via direct execution. and the duration of individual operations is obtained from a performance prediction model or from prior measurements. Simulations may then vary Cluster model parameters, operation durations and problem decomposition parameters to analyze their impact on the application performance and identify the limiting factors. We implemented the proposed techniques by adding direct execution simulation capabilities to (he Dynamic parallel Schedules parallelization framework. We introduce the concept of dynamic efficiency to express the resource utilization efficiency as a function of time. We verity the accuracy of our simulator by comparing the effective running time, respectively the dynamic efficiency. of parallel program executions with the running time, respectively the dynamic efficiency, predicted by the simulator under different parallelization and dynamic node allocation strategies. As an emergence technology, P2P is spreading to distributed simulation area, and many distributed simulation frameworks have used P2P as the middleware to interconnect their existing single processor's simulators to fibrin distributed environments for simulation execution. In terms of simulation time management, most existing tools use a middleware layer to implement and support time management in a heterogeneous networking environment. and therefore, it is generally not easy, v to migrate a single processors simulation to multi-processors in these frameworks. In this paper, we present a P2P based distributed simulation time management based upon JXTA API and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), and we focus our discussion on how we implement the time management as a JXTA peer and a JXTA group service. Our time management is actually, a native distributed message passing management framework, and does not rely on any middleware layer. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of our implementations using a local Linux cluster. this work will establish a solid foundation for the more advanced distributed simulation services that have been proposed in our project [1].

this paper presents an automated, online approach to anomaly detection in high-content screening assays for pharmaceutical research. Online detection of anomalies is attractive because it offers the possibility of immediate corrective action, early termination, and redesign of assays that may require many hours or days to execute. the proposed approach employs assay-specific image processing within an assay-independent framework for distributed control, machine learning, and anomaly reporting. Specifically, we exploit coarse-grained parallelism to distribute image processing over several computing nodes while efficiently aggregating sufficient statistics across nodes. this architecture also allows us to easily handle geographically-distributed data sources. Our results from two applications, adipocyte quantitation and neurite growth estimation, confirm that this online approach to anomaly detection is feasible, efficient, and accurate.

Since coupled problem should be solved for multiphenomena, large computational resources are needed for the large scale coupled analysis. In this paper, we propose a coupled parallel finite element analysis method using wide-area distributed computational resources on the Internet. In order for PC clusters located in different places to carry out a coupled parallel finite element analysis, a PC cluster receives the data needed for the coupled analysis from the other through the Internet. To perform the computing efficiently, processes for coupled parallel analysis are allocated based on the estimation of the coupled parallel analysis time taking account of available computer resources and network performance. parallel finite element analysis of electromagnetic and structural coupled problem was carried out using two PC clusters to discuss the validity of this analysis method and computing environment.

In order to extract the frequent patterns that can become motif at high speed from amino acid sequences, we are developing the parallel Modified PrefixSpan with the distributed worker paradigm. this paper presents a new dynamic load balancing technique for the parallel Modified PrefixSpan with the distributed worker paradigm and its performance evaluation. the characteristics of the dynamic load balancing are the small-grain task and the Cache-based Random Steal schema. this paper explains these characteristics and presents performance evaluations with the PC cluster of 100 nodes.

P2P applications have been seen as one of the most elegant and simple web applications which stirred a lot of controversy as they were a vehicle for many web activities which were and are not legal. the P2P technology has been applied to many domains, from applications spanning the space of music downloading to communication system management etc. the grid as a middleware has raised P2P technology to the level of distributed computing. A series of P2P tools have been devised for the design, development and deployment of network based computing. Despite their spread, there are many open issues such as the lack of any centralized control or hierarchical organization. In this paper, a new hybrid architecture in which a P2P solution based on SIP a server to server connectivity on demand. the above serves as the central axis of a platform for media collaboration on the cloud. It is shown that using the new collaborative workspace on the cloud architecture different social networks in can be linked in a Peer-to-Peer manner.. the security issues do not make the subject of this paper. A proof of concept, a use case scenario, and results obtained from its usage in a test environment are given at the end of the paper.

We propose a flexible and scalable message-oriented mechanism allowing interoperability between different DEVS implementations towards DEVS standardization. the main objective of the proposed protocol is to enable different DEVS implementations to interface and coordinate among each other to simulate the same model structure across their diverse domains. To do so, the proposed simulation protocol uses SOAP-based Web-Services technology as the communi. cation framework to exchange control and simulation messages. the objective is achievable with minimum design changes to each DEVS implementation. mainly by hiding the detailed implementation behind a wrapper and focusing only on the exchanged messages.

Boundary-scan technology is a popular design-for-test technology, which is used by some embedded chips by means of embedding special boundary scan cells inside the circuits. It allows the debugger to talk via a JTAG port directly to the ICs core. As more and more chips using the JTAG interface, the application of JTAG emulator becomes frequent. Commercial JTAG emulators using parallel port on the market are usually expensive and inconvenience. this paper describes two methods to design an inexpensive USB interface JTAG emulator based on a single-chip ARM, including theirs hardware and software. One is the GPIO pins of an ARM device are used to generate TAP timing and its USB port is used to communicate with PC Another is used the SPI interface to generate higher TICK Result shows that this emulator not only has high speed but also is portable.

OWL and RDF/RDFS are ontological languages developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3), which have become a de facto standard for the, ontological descriptions in various domains. the evolution of these standards was influenced by the numerous advances in the research of knowledge representation and reasoning. Although support for reasoning and standardized representation is the key benefit, of these technologies, there is a lack of existing test, frameworks, which would be capable of addressing many crucial aspects of the Semantic Web applications. In this paper we propose a methodology for automated testing of OWL reasoners based on the real-world ontologies. this specification covers both terminological and assertional reasoning as well as checking of the correctness of the answers. An open-source implementation of such framework is described and a study of initial result is provided. the tests cover an extensive set of reasoners and ontologies and provide a state-of-the-art insight, into the field of OWL reasoning.

In this work we analyze the complexity of local broadcasting in the physical interference model. We present two distributed randomized algorithms: one that assumes that each node knows how many nodes there are in its geographical proximity, and another, which makes no assumptions about topology knowledge. We show that, if the transmission probability of each node meets certain characteristics, the analysis can be decoupled from the global nature of the physical interference model, and each node performs a successful local broadcast in time proportional to the number of neighbors in its physical proximity. We also provide worst-case optimality guarantees for both algorithms and demonstrate their behavior in average scenarios through simulations. © 2008 ACM.
