Location-awareness is highly relevant subject in ubiquitous computing, as many applications exploit location information to provide adequate services or adapt to a changing physical environment. While GPS provides reliable outdoor localization, indoor positioning systems present a bigger challenge. Many indoor localization systems have been proposed. However, most of them rely on customized hardware or presume some dedicated infrastructure. In this paper, we focus on WLAN-based localization in smart ubiquitous environments. We propose an improved scheme of the Weighted Centroid Localization (WCL) algorithm that is robust and provides higher location accuracy than the original WCL algorithm. the improvements are based on the use of dynamic weighting factors that are solely dependent on the correlation of the Received Signal Strength Indicators of the received beacon signals. Compared to the original WCL scheme, our approach does not increase requirements to the environment. Real-world experiments in a typical environment that we report on in this paper confirm that the increased location accuracy determined in previous calculations is reproducible in a realistic noisy environment. this provides a simple, cost-efficient, and battery-conserving, but yet adequate technique for getting the accurate location information of mobile devices.

Verified solvers for dense linear (interval-)systems require a lot of resources, both in terms of computing power and memory usage. computing a verified solution of large dense linear systems (dimension n > 10000) on a single machine quickly approaches the limits of today's hardware. therefore, an efficient parallel verified solver for distributed memory systems is needed. In this work we present such a solver, implemented in C++ and using the C-XSC library for scientific computing [10, 8]. the solver utilizes MPI [27] for communication between the nodes in the parallel environment and, where applicable, high performance ScaLAPACK [4] and BLAS [3] routines for fast computing times. High precision dot products [5, 18, 19, 21] are used to compute narrow enclosures of the solution of the system. We present test results on several high performance distributed memory systems with different architectures, which show that our solver achieves good results, both in terms of numerical accuracy as well as computing time, and is highly portable. Furthermore, even very large systems (n ≥ 100000) can be solved given a cluster with sufficient resources.

Graphics processing units (GPUs) originally designed for computer video cards have emerged as the most powerful chip in a high-performance workstation. Unlike multicore CPU architectures, which currently ship with two or four cores, GPU architectures are "manycore" with hundreds of cores capable of running thousands of threads in parallel. NVIDIA's CUDA is a co-evolved hardware-software architecture that enables high-performance computing developers to harness the tremendous computational power and memory bandwidth of the GPU in a familiar programming environment - the C programming language. We describe the CUDA programming model and motivate its use in the biomedical imaging community.

Grid application fault diagnosis using wrapper services and machine learning

Quick and accurate identification of the root cause of failures is an important prerequisite for any reliable system. However with increasing Grid size and complexity, the manual diagnosis of application faults becomes impractical, tedious and time-consuming. So far there has been a lack of systematic and comprehensive studies in organization and classification of Grid faults. We address this gap with a multi-perspective Grid fault taxonomy precisely describing an incident using eight different characteristics. Based on that, we develop a pragmatic model-based technique for application-specific fault diagnosis using indicators, symptoms and rules. Customized wrapper services then apply this knowledge to reason about the root causes of failures. In addition to applying user-provided diagnosis models we demonstrate that given a set of past classified fault events it is possible to automatically extract new models through learning. We investigated and compared several supervised classification learning and cluster analysis algorithms for this purpose. Our approach was implemented as part of the Otho Toolkit, a framework for "service-enabling" legacy applications by synthesizing tailor-made wrapper service.

P2P Grids are Grids organized into P2P networks where participant exchange computing time so as to complete computational tasks. Evaluating the performance of scheduling algorithms enables one to deploy those that are efficient. Performance is often evaluated experimentally or through simulation because these algorithms (typically heuristics) are too complex to model analytically. Testing the implementation of P2P Grid middleware before it is deployed is also important: Reproducing configurations or conditions that lead to unexpected outcomes is thus valuable. A P2P Grid environment exhibits multiple sources of failure and is typically dynamic and uncontrollable. Reproducing even basic behavior of Grid nodes in a controllable and repeatable manner is thus exceedingly difficult. Such lack of control over the environment is a major challenge in the software engineering of P2P Grid middleware [7]. Simulators have been proposed to evaluate the performance of scheduling algorithms, but are often limited in scope, reusability and accuracy, i.e. they rely on simplified models. We introduce a software engineering pattern - that we call code once, deploy twice - to both reduce the distance between simulated and implemented algorithms and reproduce, at will, Grid configurations and environments: A simulator implementation of a Grid architecture is built by virtualizing its middleware implementation. An immediate benefit is that most of the code can be reused between both implementations;only communications between Grid nodes, multithreading within Grid nodes and actual task execution are coded differently. As a derived benefit, most of the code of the middleware can be tested within the controlled environment of the simulator, before it is deployed as-is. Another benefit is high simulation accuracy. We describe the implementation of a P2P Grid following the code once, deploy twice pattern, that we believe is also relevant to other Grid types (certainly Volunteer Grids [5, 4]

the global arrays toolkit is a library that allows programmers to write parallel programs that use large arrays distributed across processing nodes. the toolkit provides advantage of one-sided communication operations through the aggregate remote memory copy interface (ARMCI). In this study, we investigate the performance of a parallel application implemented with the toolkit on cluster and grid computing environments as well as comparison of performance of same application implemented with MPI library. In cluster computing environment, the performance of the evaluating application implemented with the toolkit outperforms MPICH implementation when message size is large enough. However, for grid computing environment with lower bandwidth and high latency conditions, the performance of the evaluating application implemented with the toolkit is significantly dropped compared to that of the MPICH-G2 implementation.

We present a simple, robust and computationally efficient method for the semi-automatic segmentation of the prostate in TRUS (Transrectal Ultrasound) image. the method relies on a variational formulation based on a deformable super- ellipse and a region energy based on the assumption of a Rayleigh distribution. Instead of using the classical level-set approach, we directly insert the implicit representation of a deformable super-ellipse into the energy to minimize. this yields a super-ellipse evolution able to accurately segment prostate and surrounding tissues while handling boundary gaps on the contour.

this paper introduces a novel method for accelerated dynamic image acquisition for cardiac MRI. this method combines two different formalisms for reconstruction from sparse data by incorporation of prior information. parallel imaging uses information about coil geometry in imaging systems with multiple receiver coils. Reduced field of view (rFOV) imaging exploits knowledge about static regions in a dynamic image scene. the novel method combines the SPACE-RIP implementation of parallel imaging with the Noquist rFOV imaging method, which both use a direct inversion model for image reconstruction. the theory is presented for integrated application of these methods, and results are presented of supporting experiments with simulated and real MRI data, retrospectively subsampled to generate sparse data sets. Successful application of the method confirms multiplicative combined acceleration.
