Service-computing is the computing paradigm that utilizes services as building blocks for developing applications or solutions. Because simplicity of services, applications, and their interaction are critical for low cost and high productivity of service-computing, this paper tries to explore a proper bound of the simplicity. By proving that any Turing machine is equivalent to the interaction product of three generalized finite automata, we show that the services can be as simple as generalized finite automata, and their interaction can be as simple as interaction product. Since generalized finite automata are equivalent to finite automata which are intuitively very simple, and interaction product is an interaction mechanism imposing few constraints on its components, this result is generally helpful in distributed-system designs for achieving low cost and high productivity.

As streaming video over the Internet becomes increasingly popular, cost-effective caching of these large multimedia documents has become of utmost importance. For large media objects, such as a 2-hour video, treating the whole video as a single web object for caching is not appropriate. the paper presents reservation-based caching algorithms to evaluate a segment-based buffer management approach for off-line scheduling and caching in polynomial time. the cache admission and replacement policies decide when, where and for how long videos will be cached. Requests for videos are available a priori.

Grid systems at different levels have already been constructed around the world to provide users an easy way of accessing/integrating distributedcomputing, data and other resources. Portal layer is on the top of typical three layers in Grid system and provides presentation interface to the end-users. Portlets as executing components in portal layer usually access a specific Grid middleware rather than multi Grid middlewares. A new Grid system is implemented in this paper. It follows typical three layer structure of Grid system. By using UDDI registry, Grid Portlets in the portal layer can select services interfaces and find out suitable Grid middleware. Abstraction and Business Logics which are Java CoG-based in service layer will map to suitable Globus Toolkit middlewares. the end-users can use the Grid Portlets to access GT2, GT3 or GT4 middleware.

Composing Grid Services to workflows, which solve specific problems is not a trivial task. Various parameters like for example timing constraints, desired quality of solution, availability of (computing) resources, error recovery, payment and security issues, to name only a few, have to be considered the heterogeneity and the highly dynamic nature of the Grid pose additional challenges. Current implementations try to construct workflows based on the user's needs and the capabilities of the respective services before the actual run. In this paper we propose a blackboard method that is able to find (near) optimal workflows and accommodate to changing conditions like for instance delays or faults on the fly.

Many existing monitoring systems are not easily interoperable for the lack of consistency. A uniform monitoring framework is proposed to leverage interoperability. A consistent data provider is designed upon GAM producers to facilitate common information representation. Monitoring service agent and republishers are developed to facilitate the information distribution and aggregation. A prototype is implemented based on monitoring tools such as Ganglia, GridView, and PBS, etc. Experiments are given to show the good feasibility and scalability.

there are many effective heuristic algorithms for scheduling in the computational grid, however most scheduling strategies have not consider how to effectively share abundant applications software, especially commercial applications software with limited licenses. In this paper, we propose an application-oriented on-demand scheduling approach. It is based on the static and near-real-time application-specific and system-specific information. the scheduling system on-demand intelligently reacts to diverse applications and situations on behalf of the end-users. the implementation and the experiments results show that it delivers good performance.

Grid resources having heterogeneous architectures, being geographically distributed and interconnected via unreliable network media, are at the risk of failure. Grid environment consists of unreliable resources;therefore, fault tolerant mechanisms can not be ignored. Some scientific jobs require long commitments of grid resources whose failures may not be overlooked. We need a flexible management of these failures by considering the failure of fault manager itself. In this paper we propose the concept of distributed management of failures without engaging the resources for this particular task exclusively. Resources performing the fault management may also participate in serving the long running user jobs. Each sub job of the main user job is inspected by an individual resource. In case of failure inspector resource takes over in place of inspected resource. Contributions of this paper are: elimination of single point of failure and proposed concept's ability to be integrated with variety of grid middleware.

Grid computing is becoming practicable, open and standard. Around the world a lot of grid projects and initiatives are being implemented, and many of them tend to be productive. there are several production ready grid softwares such as Globus Toolkit and UNICORE. Grid will become the information infrastructure of workflow in the petroleum industry. Advances in grid computing will meet the tremendous and scalable demands of petroleum E&P for high performance computing: this paper describes the architecture, key technology and application of SeisGrid.

As Grid computing becomes a reality, a resource broker is needed to manage and monitor available resources. this work presents a workflow-based computational resource broker whose main function is to match available resources with user requests and consider network information status during matchmaking. the resource broker provides a uniform interface for accessing available and the appropriate resources via user credentials. We utilize the NWS tool to monitor the network-related information and resources status. Also, we constructed a grid platform using Globus Toolkit that integrates the distributed resources of five universities in Taichung, Taiwan, where the resource broker is developed. As a result, the proposed broker provides secure and updated information about available resources and serves as a link to the diverse systems available in the Grid.
