We propose a method of constructing the filters for reliable patternrecognition in an optical setup. the filters based on a phase-only filter are designed by applying a quantization technique to the optimal filter. High light efficiency and discrimination capability close to that of the optimal filter can be obtained by the proposed method. Computer simulation results are shown and discussed.

the paper is devoted to image features based on fractal dimension of a set. the algorithm for calculation of grid empirical fractal dimension (GEFD) of a gray-level image is introduced. the properties of GEFD are investigated using the representation of an original gray-level image by the pyramid of 3-D binary images.

Previous efforts at facial expression recognition have been based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), a representation developed in order to allow human psychologists to code expression from static facial 'mugshots.' In this paper we develop new, more accurate representations for facial expression by building a video database of facial expressions and then probabilistically characterizing the facial muscle activation associated with each expression using a detailed physical model of the skin and muscles. this produces a muscle-based representation of facial motion, which is then used to recognize facial expressions in two different ways. the first method uses the physics-based model directly, by recognizing expressions through comparison of estimated muscle activations. the second method uses the physics-based model to generate spatio-temporal motion-energy templates of the whole face for each different expression. these simple, biologically-plausible motion energy 'templates' are then used for recognition. Both methods show substantially greater accuracy at expression recognitionthan has been previously achieved.

A new algorithm for building irregular pyramids is presented. the algorithm is based on only two basic operations on graphs, contraction and removal of edges. By making use of the concept of dual graphs, the algorithm overcomes the problem of unbounded vertex degree proper to the existing approach to building irregular pyramids. this boundedness extends the scope of parallel, degree preserving graph contraction also to irregular structures. Our method can be applied to all problems in which a 2D discrete space can be represented by a planar graph. Four-connected square grids, region adjacency graphs, Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay triangulations are examples of such plane representations.
