In "Demonstratives" Kaplan claims that the occurrence of a demonstrative must be supplemented by an act of demonstration, like a pointing (a feature of the objective context). Conversely in "Afterthoughts" Kaplan argues that the occurrence of a demonstrative must be supplemented by a directing intention (a feature of the intentional context). I present the two theories in competition and try to identify the constraints an intention must satisfy in order to have semantic relevance. My claim is that the analysis of demonstrative reference provides a reliable test for our intuitions on the relation between objective and intentional context. I argue that the speaker's intentions can play a semantic role only if they satisfy an Availability Constraint: an intention must be made available or communicated to the addressee, and for that purpose the speaker can exploit any feature of the objective context. this thesis implies the reconciliation between "Demonstratives" and "Afterthoughts".

context-aware application plays an important role in the ubiquitous computing (ubiComp) environment by providing the user with comprehensive services even without any explicitly triggered command. In this paper, we propose a unified context-aware application model which is an essential part to develop various applications in the ubiquitous computing environment. the proposed model affirms the independence between sensor and application by using a unified context in the form of Who (user identity), What (object identity), Where (location), When (time), Why (user intention/emotion) and How (user gesture), called 5W1H. It also ensures that the application exploits a relatively accurate context to trigger personalized services. To show usefulness of the proposed model, we apply it to the sensors and applications in the ubiHome, a test bed for ubiComp-enabled home applications. According to the experimental results, without loss of generality, we believe it can be extended to various context-aware applications in daily life.

this paper proposes a new approach to state duration modeling for HMM-based speech synthesis. A set of state durations of each phoneme HMM is modeled by a multi-dimensional Gaussian distribution, and duration models a...

Each of these brought together researchers and practitioners from a large range of ?elds to discuss and report on context-related research and projects. the context 2007 conference was held at Roskilde University, Denmark. the ?rst two days were devoted to workshops on speci?c areas of interest to the context community and, in parallel, the doctoralconsortium. the remaining three days featured invited talks, presentations, and posters on boththeoretical and applied context research. this volume contains the papers presented at context 2007, the Sixthinternational and interdisciplinaryconference on modeling and usingcontext. there were 121 submissions to the conference. the committee decided to accept 42 papers on the basis of a thorough and highly selective review process. We believe that the papers of this volume represent a snapshot of current work and contribute to boththeoretical and applied aspects of research.

context is of crucial importance for research and applications in many disciplines, as evidenced by many workshops, symposia, seminars, and conferences on specific aspects of context. the international and interdisciplinaryconference on modeling and usingcontext (context), the oldest conference series focusing on context, provides a unique interdisciplinary emphasis, bringing together participants from a wide range of disciplines, including artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science, linguistics, organizational science, philosophy, psychology, ubiquitous computing, and application areas such as medicine and law, to discuss and report on context-related research and projects. Previous contextconferences were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1997), Trento, Italy (1999, LNCS 1688), Dundee, UK (2001, LNCS 2116), and Palo Alto, USA (2003, LNCS 2680). context2005 was held in Paris, France during July 5–8, 2005. there was a strong response to the context2005 Call for Papers, with 120 submissions received. A careful review process assessed all submissions, with each paper first reviewed by the international Program Committee, and then reviewer discussions were initiated as needed to assure that the final decisions carefully considered all aspects of each paper. Reviews of submissions by the Program Chairs were supervised independently and anonymously, to assure fair consideration of all work. Out of the 120 submissions, 23 were selected as full papers for oral presentation, and 20 were selected as full papers for poster presentation. these outstanding papers are presented in this proceedings.
