this paper looks at the introduction of UML Umberllo in a university-level course to assist learning softwareengineering. In theory, Umberllo should help students better visualize the design of models in a pragmatic and clearly-defined way, which in turn should be reflected in students' outcome. We identify lack of experience as a major constraining factor with negative implications in students' models. Initial results are encouraging and show that students are willing to embrace the new method and that Umberllo itself can help deliver more comprehensive and coherent designs.

Parallel programming platforms are heterogeneous and incompatible;a common approach is needed to free programmers from platforms' technical intricacies, allowing flexible execution in which sequential and parallel executions produce identical results. the execution and programming model of an embedded flexible language (EFL), which implement this common approach, are presented. EFL allows embedding of deterministic parallel code blocks into a sequential program, written in any host language. EFL programming model constructs are presented. An EFL implementation of the Reduce Parallel Design Pattern is presented. With EFL we aim to implement safe and efficient parallel execution, in software, hardware, or both. Consequences of Rice's theorem regarding parallel computation are discussed. these consequences severely restrict what can be checked at compile time. An approach is proposed for circumventing these restrictions.

this paper argues in favor of the development of explanatory theory on software process improvement. the last one or two decades commitment to prescriptive approaches in software process improvement literature may be of limited use to practitioners if they are flooded by prescriptions but left without theory to help them understand these prescriptions and their underlying rationalities. It is proposed that prescriptions be supplemented by SPI theory evaluating prescriptive approaches and informing improvement practice with a focus on the software process policymaking and process control aspects of improvement efforts.
