the identification of quality requirements is crucial to develop modern software systems, especially when their underlying context is changing or depending over time. Much work has been done on functional requirements specification, however nonfunctional requirements have been only superficially considered. Moreover, methods for architectural design focus on quality requirements; however their specification and traceability with respect to the system's functionality is not clear. the goal of this work is to outline a pattern-based architectural design process model focused on quality requirements engineering.

Despite the preoccupations in the last few years to predict the most important cement quality characteristic (28-day compressive strength), as some papers have shown, there are still concerns about the best mathematical theory to apply within the shortest time. As a consequence, a dedicated 28-dayCompressiveStrengthPrediction(C) v.2.0-2002 software was created using C++ programming technique, to work comparatively with the methods of regression, artificial neural networks and fuzzy systems. To model the 28-day compressive strength there were used 310 CEM I 42,5 R and CEM II/A,B-S 32,5 R type cements according to EN 197-1: 2000, which were constituted in 52 mathematical models (data basis) based on the following experimental characteristics: (a) for clinkers - liter weight LW (g/l), lime saturation factor LSF, alumina ratio AR, silica ratio SR, tricalcium silicate C3S (%), dicalcium silicate C2S (%), tricalcium aluminate C(3)A (%), tetracalcium aluminoferrite C(4)AF (%), free lime CaOf (%) and, (b) for cements - Blaine specific surface area (cm(2)/g), residue on the 90mum sieve (%), water for standard consistence (%), initial and final setting time (min), loss of ignition LOI (%), insoluble residue in HCl (%), sulphur trioxide SO3 (%), the slag content (%), 2 and 28-day compressive strength (N/mm(2)). the fuzzy systems method has offered the most accurate models in comparison with the regression and neural network methods. To predict the 28-day compressive strength a number of 29 CEM 142,5 R and CEM II/A, B-S 32,5 R type cements were used. the prediction results range between 0.5 N/mm(2) and +/- 2.5 N/mm(2) and prove that 28-dayCompressiveStrengthPrediction(C) v.2.0-2002 is an useful tool which can be successfully used to assess the standard strength within 5 - 48 hours (depending on the clinker and/or cement characteristics used in the models) with good precision.

this paper presents a motion control system which employs a load decoder, capable of analyzing the load value and changes, applied to the motor's rotor, decoding them into an instruction set for the controller input. the system is implemented in a field programmable gate array (FPGA) device, which have recently become affordable for implementing complicated motion control algorithms. All motion control logic is implemented in hardware (no software at all) and executes functions by the dedicated hardware logic. In such a case execution time becomes inherently fast and deterministic. this complicates the design, compared to the rather simple solution in software on DSP but offers reduced control system price which is essential for mass production applications. Moreover it can be easily transformed into ASIC for further cost reduction.

the data presented here reveal how traditional college students cope with a totally online class experience. the largest enrollment online course at the Pennsylvania State University is the general education offering "Energy & the Environment", developed jointly by the Department of Energy & Geo-Environmental engineering and the John A. Dutton e-Education Institute. Within the first 2-years <1,000 students (mostly on-campus residential students) have been engaged, online. Students work independently or in self-forming cohorts reading text, listening to audio, watching movie clips, and interacting with imagery or simulations online. the majority of students fit the traditional profile in terms of age and on-campus residential status. the class is consistently 60% male. the students are predominantly sophomores (41%), although all academic standings are present within this general education course. One of the main reasons given for enrolling is "flexibility." Roughly half of the student activity (56%) is after the traditional workday of 8 AM to 5:00 PM. Only 10% of the online activity occurs within the traditional morning hours. In a class with weekly Friday evening deadlines, there was little activity (measured by number of page requests) occurring on Saturday (5%), Friday has the bulk of the activity (27%). About 72% of the students accessed the material from home with a high-speed connection. About 17% did the bulk of their work at a computing laboratory, despite the fact that 96% of the class has a personal computer. While the students gained content specific knowledge, they also learned "self-discipline" and other "professional" behavior, and had exposure to online learning and course management software. © 2004 IEEE.

this paper presents use of numerical simulations coupled with optimization techniques in reservoir modeling and production optimization. We describe three main components of an autonomic oil production management framework. this framework implements a dynamic, data-driven approach and enables execution in a Grid environment for large scale optimization formulations in reservoir modeling. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

For several years we have been watching with envy as specialist labs are developed for multimedia students, which together with software licenses, are now costing upwards of $5,000 per seat. We would like to be able to offer as rich a learning experience for our software engineers who study a final year module on real-time software engineering. In persisting with our students' main taught programming language of Java we argue that it is still possible to demonstrate the issues of software development for real-time systems whilst also offering realistic and rewarding practical work. Although the real-time community is still largely working in C, we believe we can educate the real-time developers of the future, and we use, as leverage for this, the ever growing body of reported work in making Java technology more suitable for time critical and embedded systems development. We present our case for a relevant real-time undergraduate laboratory based around Java.

Current FPGA architectures are heterogeneous, containing tens of thousands of logic elements and hundreds of embedded multipliers and memory units. However, efficiently utilizing these resources requires hardware designers and complex computer aided design tools. the paper describes several multi-processor architectures implemented on an FPGA, including a 64-way single interface multiple data (SIMD) and a variable size very long instruction word (VLIW) architecture. the design and synthesis of the target architectures are presented and compared for scalability and achieving parallelism. the performance and chip utilization of a shared register file is examined for different numbers of VLIW processing elements. the associated compilation flow is described based on the Trimaran VLIW compiler which achieves explicitly parallel instructions from C code. Benchmarks from the Media-Bench suite are being used to test the performance of the parallelism of both the software and hardware components.

Phylogenetic tree (or phylogeny) is a meaningful tree representation for the evolutionary history of different organisms that it has been shown useful in drug discovery, virus identification and functional genomic study [1]. the objective of this project is to develop efficient FPGA implementations for phylogenetic tree reconstruction algorithms. By taking advantage of hardware high-performance, we explore the possibilities of parallelization and system optimization to provide high-speed acceleration for the phylogeny inference. the Maximum Likelihood approach for inferring the phylogeny from molecular data has received much attention [2]. Although the optimal ML phylogenetic tree search problem is classified as NP-hard and it is difficult to find the optimal solution, the GAML algorithm (based on Genetic Algorithm and Maximum Likelihood) has been shown to find a good near-optimal solution in reasonable time [3]. In [4], we have shown that using HW/SW (Hardware/ software) codesign for GAML implementation can provide significant speed-up when compared with software-only implementation. Our HW/SW system has good potential for handling large scale problems in real applications. In [5], an enhanced version of FPGA design with parallel and pipelined implementation for the likelihood evaluation is proposed. It has been shown 100 times faster than the single-CPU solution for the ML tree evaluation. To reduce precision loss attributed to truncation error in the FPGA, we are developing a dynamic floating-point alike structure based on the fixed-point architecture. We have also studied the implementation of phylogenetic tree reconstruction algorithm in the embedded platform (i.e. VirtexII-Pro Platform FPGA). Significant improvement in data transmission rate between hardware and software and higher clock frequency of FPGA have been realized [6]. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Single-bit delta-sigma (/spl Delta//spl Sigma/) modulation reduces the complexity of receive beamformers in ultrasound and sonar imaging applications. these applications, however, require a sampling rate in excess of 220 MHz due to the high bandwidth of the echo signals. In this paper, the design and implementation of a 250 MHz second-order single-bit /spl Delta//spl Sigma/ modulator suitable for ultrasound/sonar applications is presented. the circuit is realized in a 0.18 /spl mu/m P-well CMOS technology and dissipates 20 mW average power when clocked at 250 MHz. the area of the circuit is 0.24 mm/sup 2/. Post-layout simulations show that the modulator achieves 48 dB maximum SNR and 50 dB dynamic range for a 5 MHz input signal bandwidth.

In the automata-theoretic approach to model checking we check the emptiness of the product of a system S with an automaton A¬ψ for the complemented specification. this gives rise to two automata-theoretic problems: complementation of word automata, which is used in order to generate A¬ψ, and the emptiness problem, to which model checking is reduced. Both problems have numerous other applications, and have been extensively studied for nondeterministic Büchi word automata (NBW). Nondeterministic generalized Büchi word automata (NGBW) have become popular in specification and verification and are now used in applications traditionally assigned to NBW. this is due to their richer acceptance condition, which leads to automata with fewer states and a simpler underlying structure. In this paper we analyze runs of NGBW and use the analysis in order to describe a new complementation construction and a symbolic emptiness algorithm for NGBW. the complementation construction exponentially improves the best known construction for NGBW and is easy to implement. the emptiness algorithm is almost identical to a known variant of the Emerson-Lei algorithm, and our contribution is the strong relation we draw between the complementation construction and the emptiness algorithm-both naturally follow from the analysis of the runs, which easily implies their correctness. this relation leads to a new certified model-checking procedure, where a positive answer to the model-checking query is accompanied by a certificate whose correctness can be checked by methods independent of the model checker. Unlike certificates generated in previous works on certified model checking, our analysis enables us to generate a certificate that can be checked automatically and symbolically. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
