Various implementations of D-flip-flops (DFF) for shift register designs in CMOS image sensors are proposed. Driven by requirements of low-area and low-power dissipation, the presented FF allow implementation of power-efficient shift registers, used for signal readout control and windows of interest definition in CMOS image sensors and are optimized for operation at low frequencies. Power dissipation of the presented DFF is significantly reduced by leakage control using the stack effect. A variety of DFF and a shift-register, using the stacking effect approach, have been implemented in 0.18 /spl mu/m standard CMOS technology to compare the proposed DFF and shift-register structures with existing alternatives, showing an up to 63 % reduction in power dissipation of a shift-register at 30 Hz frequency. Operation of the proposed circuits is discussed and simulation results are reported.

the fundamental problem that confronts Pakistani software industry is that they have very limited experience in software process improvement strategies. We hardly find any Capability Maturity Model (CMM) level 3, 4 or 5 certified company in our software industry. It is therefore, necessary to find out the problems that are faced by companies in adopting CMM or its components. As a first step software configuration management (SCM), which is one component or key process area of CMM level 2, is focused in this research for evaluation. this paper is based on an auditor-based survey of 38 Islamabad based software companies. the goal was to find our adherence of these companies to SCM strategies. Some issues are identified, that need to be resolved for successful implementation of SCM. this paper also highlights where Islamabad based software companies rank them with respect to CMM.

A self-feedback ratio-memory cellular nonlinear network (SRMCNN) with the B template and modified Hebbian learning algorithm to learn and recognize image patterns is proposed and analyzed. In this SRMCNN, the coefficients of space-variant B templates are determined from the exemplar patterns during the learning period. the weights are the ratio of the absolute summation of its neighborhood weights in the B templates stored in the associative memory. the SRMCNN can recognize the learned patterns with distinct white-black noise and output the correct patterns. Matlab and HSPICE software have simulated the operation of the proposed SRMCNN. It is shown that the 18/spl times/18 SRMCNN can successfully learn and recognize 8 incompletely noisy patterns. As compared to other learnable CNN as associative memories, the proposed SRMCNN could improve pattern learning and recognition capability. the architecture can be implemented in nano-CMOS technology for a giga-scale learning system in real-time applications.

In this paper, the hardware implementations of five representative stream ciphers are compared in terms of performance and consumed area. the ciphers used for the comparison are the A5/1, W7, E0, RC4 and Helix. the first three ones have been used for the security part of well-known standards. the Helix cipher is a recently introduced fast, word oriented, stream cipher. the W7 algorithm has been recently proposed as a more trustworthy solution for GSM, due to the security problems that occurred concerning the A5/1 strength. the designs were coded using the VHDL language. For the hardware implementation of the designs, an FPGA device was used. the implementation results illustrate the hardware performance of each cipher in terms of throughput-to-area ratio. this ratio equals: 5.88 for the A5/1, 1.26 for the W7, 0.21 for the E0, 2.45 for the Helix and 0.86 for the RC4.

Circumstances - a 5-week course format with two 4-hour evening classes each week - impelled an alternative approach for the introductory operating systems course at Rochester Institute of Technology in summer 2003. We used a co-operative learning approach based loosely on the jigsaw methodology. Students were divided into teams, and each assigned to prepare one subtopic of the material for each course session. Each class consisted of a lecture session, followed by team sessions where each member explained their portion of the lecture material and the team discussed it. this format proved very successful in increasing student involvement and making sure that nearly all students came away with at least a basic understanding of the material. the paper presents the details of the format, challenges faced, positive outcomes and limitations, and data and perspectives from student surveys.

Shape analysis concerns the problem of determining "shape invariants" for programs that perform destructive updating on dynamically allocated storage. this paper presents a new algorithm that takes as input an abstract value (a 3-valued logical structure describing some set of concrete stores X) and a precondition p, and computes the mostprecise abstract value for the stores in X that satisfy p. this algorithm solves several open problems in shape analysis: (i) computing the mostprecise abstract value of a set of concrete stores specified by a logical formula;(ii) computing best transformers for atomic program statements and conditions;(iii) computing best transformers for loop-free code fragments (i.e., blocks of atomic program statements and conditions);(iv) performing interprocedural shape analysis using procedure specifications and assume-guarantee reasoning;and (v) computing the most-precise overapproximation of the meet of two abstract values. the algorithm employs a decision procedure for the logic used to express properties of data structures. A decidable logic for expressing such properties is described in [5]. the algorithm can also be used with an undecidable logic and a theorem prover;termination can be assured by using standard techniques (e.g., having the theorem prover return a safe answer if a time-out threshold is exceeded) at the cost of losing the ability to guarantee that a most-precise result is obtained. A prototype has been implemented in TVLA, using the SPASS theorem prover. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

the Communication and Multimedia Laboratory (CML), National Taiwan University, has been developing an MPEG-4 editor for 5 years since 1998. In 2001, Digimax Production Ltd joined this project and we have addressed ourselves to making the system more complete. We have implemented a visual MPEG-4 scene editor for creating 2D/3D mixed scenes, with the following features: event routing mechanism; visual editing; friendly user interface. With our system, one can easily produce highly interactive MPEG-4 content.

In this paper we summarize recent results in a development of narrow-band HTS bandpass filters on sapphire substrate for future wireless communications systems. the filters are designed to have 5 or 10 MHz pass band in the UMTS base stations receive band. the filters exhibit quasi-elliptic function response for higher selectivity with a reduced number of resonators. they are implemented with either a cascaded-quadruplet (CQ) or a cascaded-quadruplet-triplet (CQT) coupling structure. the filters were fabricated on 0.43 mm-thick sapphire wafers with double-sided YBCO films. Measured results of the filters are presented, showing excellent performance.

Movement patterns play a crucial role in evaluating the performance of mobility-dependent personal communication service (PCS) strategies, such as location updating and paging schemes. this study proposes a novel normal walk model to represent more closely the daily mobility patterns of a mobile station (MS) in mesh PCS networks than a conventional random walk model. the proposed model applies an equivalent drift angle 8 to determine the direction in which an MS leaves a mesh cell in the next one step. the angle 8 is assumed to approach a normal distribution with parameters: /spl mu/ = 0/spl deg/ and /spl sigma/ is on the interval [5/spl deg/, 90/spl deg/], based on the concept that most trips follow the shortest path. this assumption implies that varying can redistribute the probabilities associated with 8 to make the normal movement patterns more realistic than the random ones. Moreover, for a = 79.5/spl deg/, a normal walk can behave almost like a conventional random walk.

the data presented here reveal how traditional college students cope with a totally online class experience. the largest enrollment online course at the Pennsylvania State University is the general education offering "Energy & the Environment", developed jointly by the Department of Energy & Geo-Environmental engineering and the John A. Dutton e-Education Institute. Within the first 2-years >1,000 students (mostly on-campus residential students) have been engaged, online. Students work independently or in self-forming cohorts reading text, listening to audio, watching movie clips, and interacting with imagery or simulations online. the majority of students fit the traditional profile in terms of age and on-campus residential status. the class is consistently 60% male. the students are predominantly sophomores (41%), although all academic standings are present within this general education course. One of the main reasons given for enrolling is "flexibility". Roughly half of the student activity (56%) is after the traditional workday of 8 AM to 5:00 PM. Only 10% of the online activity occurs within the traditional morning hours. In a class with weekly Friday evening deadlines, there was little activity (measured by number of page requests) occurring on Saturday (5%), Friday has the bulk of the activity (27%). About 72% of the students accessed the material from home with a high-speed connection. About 17% did the bulk of their work at a computing laboratory, despite the fact that 96% of the class has a personal computer. While the students gained content specific knowledge, they also learned "self-discipline" and other "professional" behavior, and had exposure to online learning and course management software.
