the paper presents data collected from 5 real-world (federal, state and commercial) groups as they undertook their real-world (business process reengineering (BPR) and Joint Application Development (JAD)) projects. the data were collected over a series of 41 actual meetings and organized around group characteristics such as commitment, honesty, perceived production, etc. the analysis of these data hint at changes in these group characteristics over time when using groupware (electronic meeting systems (EMS). Finally, these findings lead the authors to posit that EMS can impact the social components of a group as well as the production components.

In this paper we prove improved lower and upper bounds for the location of mobile facilities (in L∞ and L2 metrics) under the motion of clients when facility moves faster than clients. this paper continues the research started in our joint paper where we present lower bounds and efficient algorithms for exact and approximate maintenance of the 1-center for a set of moving points in the plane. Our algorithms are based on the kinetic framework introduced by Basch, Guibas and Hershberger.

this paper analyzes the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem in multicode-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems. the statistical distribution of PAPR is derived and the achievable PAPR reduction for a given code rate is estimated. We show that the PAPR in MC-CDMA communications systems can be reduced by partial transmit sequence (PTS) and selected mapping (SLM) approaches. In PTS, the subblocks are multiplied by a set of phase factors that are optimized to minimize PAPR. In SLM, several independent data frames are generated and the data frame withthe lowest PAPR is selected for transmission. We also show that the BER performance improves when the PAPR-reduced MC-CDMA signal is passed through a nonlinear amplifier. SLM reduces the error floor caused by amplifier nonlinearities and offers an SNR gain of 6 dB at 10/sup -5/ BER with an input back-off of 1 dB.

An active filter (AF) is required to have a high current control capability of tracking a time-varying current reference. However, a steady-state current error always exists because the current reference varies in time. this paper proposes the application of adaptive digital signal processing (ADSP) to the current control of AF ADSP does not require any additional hardware. It can automatically minimize the steady-state error. Since the processing time available by a computer is limited, ADSP cannot eliminate higher order harmonics but can eliminate lower order harmonics such as 5/sup th/ to 17/sup th/. Experimental results demonstrate that ADSP is useful for improving filtering performance.

In this paper we present the design and synthesis of a direct connected network devices controller (DCNDC) to provide substantial speed-up for networking applications that eliminate the need for a computer to connect digital devices to a local area network (LAN). Specifically, the first goal is to design DCNDC. the main function of DCNDC is to eliminate the operating system processing of the network protocol stack in order to simplify the connection and improve network performance. It utilizes the concept of network channels in Ethernet. Upon completion of the DCNDC and validating its simulation outputs, we synthesize the design in an FPGA chip. Performance measures like power consumption are computed using synthesis tools. If DCNDC reduces the power consumption, network devices can be powered through a category-5 network cable and eliminate the process of regular electrical power outlet installations and maintenance. So, DCNDC will also reduce the connection complexity in terms of device installation.

the rule-based approach from traditional Al and the conventional constraint satisfaction algorithms are not adequate to cope withthe unpredictable events and interactive computations in distributed CAD environments. this paper claims that the problems faced by distributed CAD systems require solutions based on the concepts of emergence, reactivity, and online algorithms, the present paper presents Extended Constraints Graphs (ECGs) as online algorithms supporting emergence in a network of reactive agents. ECGs represent an effective solution for the nonlinear constraint problem in cyclic graphs, which are distributed over a heterogeneous computer network. the relationships between agents in an ECG are generic, distributed, recursive and nonlinear - a problem not solved in the literature. Also this paper presents a CORBA model integrated with a Geometry Bus to support distributed virtual prototype whose variables can be defined in terms of ECGs.
