the problem of the increasing cost of constructing Intelligent Learning Environments (ILEs) has been highlighted by a number of researchers. Agent-based softwareengineering (Genesereth and Ketchpel 1994) has been proposed as the starting point for a methodology for constructing agent-based ILEs. We have developed a methodology, called Flexible ILEs via Agent systems (FILEAS) which seeks to meet the requirements of researchers by supporting incomplete specification, changes to specification, removal of components, incorporation of existing software and extendibility of component use. A case study was conducted with good ecological validity designed to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of the FIILEAS methodology. the context adopted was the development of an ILE to investigate issues in learning by analogy, and the focus was upon building individual agents. Studies of the kind that have been presented here are rarely made but are needed both to support the research community and to help identify areas for further development of methodologies and tools. the results indicated that the FILEAS methodology would provide much of the flexibility required by ILE researchers. the process of incorporating software was straightforward. those changes that were required were in the main not too expensive to make. Further work is outlined to carry out an extended case study to examine the methodology.

the paper is concerned withthose properties of softwarethat can be statically surmised from the source code. Many such properties have been extensively studied from the perspective of compiler construction technology. However, live variable analysis, alias analysis and the such are too low level to be of interest to the software engineer. the authors identify a family of statically checkable properties that should represent a higher level abstraction, and reach the detailed design level. Properties in this family which is defined by five precise distinguishing criteria are called traits. Some examples of traits include mutability, const correctness, ownership, and pure functions. In fact, in many ways, traits are non-standard types. they argue that traits should bring about similar benefits to these of static typing in terms of clarity, understandability, adherence to design decisions, and robustness. they further argue that traits can be used for better checking of substitutability in inheritance relationships. Having made the case for traits, they proceed to describing a taxonomy for classifying and understanding traits and show how it can be used to better understand previous work on this topic. the paper also discusses the abstract computational complexity of traits and compares previous research from that perspective.

In current multidatabase systems, an important problem is identifying semantic heterogeneities. the global schema multidatabases provide simple and effective paradigm;however creating and maintainging the global schema is difficult. Furthermore, these systems could not operate properly in dynamic environments. the new approaches using new technological developments such as agent technology, domain ontologies, intelligent mediator, and high-level query languages could operate properly in dynamic and open environments, but need well-established sharable knowledge which is a burdon to the user. In this paper, we suggest an approach for integrating information in multidatabase systems using Multi-Aspect Semantic Model(MASM). the MASM is a model which considers several aspects, such as semantic features, schematic aspect, neme, functional aspect, and context, to evalute the semantic similarity among objects and does not need well-established knowledge which must be acceptable among component databases. All necessary knowledge for integration is gathered independently in each component database rather than created and shared among component databases.

the paper describes the design and implementation of a control system which in 1996 was successfully installed in a Slovenian brickworks. Its primary function is efficient control of the drying process in the factory, and so far this system is conceived as a classic computer-based process control system. With regard to the possible need to incorporate this control system into a future CIM information system, a concept of flexible recipes was applied as a possible integration link between planning, which is a typical business-level activity and process control, which is a production level activity. Flexible recipes thus may provide a modest contribution to the integration of shop floor control and logistical functions.
