computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is considered to be a strategy for planning, implementing, and integrating many functions in a manufacturing organization. A concurrent engineering design environment encourages multi-disciplinary communication of design ideas very early in the design cycle. A contemporary approach to realize the benefits of concurrent engineering design uses automated computersystems and a plethora of computer aided engineering tools. Methods are needed to integrate these tools, as most of them are stand-alone software tools that do not communicate to each other effectively. this paper presents a methodology that can integrate an advanced CAD software and a process planning software. A milling application example is used to demonstrate how the primary machining parameters can be calculated and directly imported to the CAD software, thus creating a seamless preparation of the NC part program.

Complex applications in domains such as decision support systems and real time systems require a functionality that is achieved by combining the active and temporal database technologies. In this paper we present TALE, a Temporal Active Language and Execution model. TALE is a temporal active database programming language, combined with an execution model that enables a correct and efficient processing of operations. As such, TALE is a step in accommodating softwareengineering challenges in modern information systems. TALE primitives are presented using examples and an EBNF. the run-time control mechanism of the model is introduced and TALE properties, namely active and temporal capabilities, and reflective programming capabilities are discussed.

Manufacturing systems are complex and involve multiple software applications, each containing an internal representation of the manufacturing system in the form of a database or data files. the model which defines an application's database is influenced by how the users of an application view the system. these views can be influenced by where in the product or manufacturing system life cycle the software is used, what functional areas use the software, and the detail at which the system is modeled. this paper presents a framework for integrating CIM software applications by developing a unified system view. this view identifies software applications which contain duplicate and possibly inconsistent data. Once identified, duplicate data can be used to establish constraints that one software system places on other systems and where data can be shared between systems.

this paper reports on an effort to develop an integrated set of diagrammatic languages for modeling object-oriented systems, and to construct a supporting tool. the goal is for models to be intuitive and well-structured, yet fully executable and analyzable, enabling automatic synthesis of usable and efficient code in object-oriented languages such as C++. At the heart of the modeling method is the language of statecharts for specifying object behavior, and a hierarchical OMT-like language for describing the structure of classes and their inter-relationships, that we call O-charts. Objects can interact by event generation, or by direct invocation of operations. In the interest of keeping the exposition manageable, we leave out some technically involved topics, such as multiple-thread concurrency and active objects, which will be described elsewhere.
