this paper points out different application areas of computer-aided schematics in factory automation including computer-aided operating on the base of graphical supervisory stations, the generation and documentation of logic schematics, and interactive graphical net design for the preparation of simulation experiments regarding time-parallel, interacting processes as performed in flexible manufacturing systems. the paper emphasizes specific properties of schematics and resulting specific demands on computer aides for their generation, manipulation and storage. the most essential demand regards th utilization of the structural informaiton contents of schematics in the process of their generation. Accordingly, algorithms and corresponding software tools have been developed which are the basis of an efficient input technology, and especially a high degree of automation in the process of schematics generation.

the paper presents a general but very practical approach to the functional integrating of large packages of modelling-industry software in order to accomplish some complex tasks in a fully automatic manner. this approach was implemented for the case of the integration of a well known large simulation package HEC-5 (widely available and frequently used in hydrological engineering community) and a general-purpose optimization program. the proposed solution employs the technique of interprocess communication of different processes. this facility is in various forms available in the operating systems of some modern computers.

there have been many approaches proposed for the computer-aided design of control systems. the co-authors of this paper include several strong proponents of a design methodology emphasizing designer's intuition, man-machine interaction and sophisticated optimization techniques [1]. this methodology has been implemented by our group as part of the DELIGHT MaryLin system [2, 3], an offshoot of Berkeley's DELIGHT system [4, 5]. A logical way to test this approach to computer-aided design is to apply DELIGHT. MaryLin to a number of real control system design problems and see how well it performs. this paper describes just such applications to two control problems supplied by industry. In both cases, the problems had been previously solved by other techniques. thus, we are able to compare the solution obtained with DELIGHT. MaryLin to solutions that are acceptable in actual practice.

We report on experiments with Prolog design descriptions and tools in CAEDE (Carleton Embedded System Design Environment), an experimental, iconic design environment for multitasking, embedded systems. the philosophy of CAEDE is to enter structural and temporal design information iconically, via a graphics interface, to serve as the basis for design analysis and skeleton code generation, and then to enter, under control of the iconic interface, program “strips” to fill in the functional gaps in the skeleton code. the iconic information is converted automatically into a Prolog design data base of facts and rules. CAEDE aims to support incremental design and to be incrementally extensible. In the current implementation of CAEDE, which runs on a SUN workstation supporting design for Ada, the iconic interface is limited to structural design. Here we describe the Prolog side of our research, covering the nature of the facts produced from the iconic input by the current implementation and their use by experimental Prolog tools for structural analysis, temporal analysis and Ada code generation. the aim is to show how Prolog is contributing to the framework of a powerful, extensible design environment.

An FMS can be regarded as an integrated system of automated machine tools, transport and material handling facilities and a computer system. It is installed to improve the productivity of production systems in a job shop. this paper presents a simulator for a flexible manufacturing system to evaluate the performance of hardware and softwaresystems prior to their implementation into a production system. this simulator is installed on a 16-bit desk top computer. Graphical/numerical data output and computer animation techniques are provided.
