Recent experimental studies in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have confirmed that asymmetry in the wireless links has a significant effect on the performance of WSN network protocols. Protocols which work in simulation studies often fail when link asymmetry is encountered in real deployments. Characterization of link asymmetry is thus of paramount importance for the design and operation of re-silient WSN protocols in real scenarios. this paper details an empirical study to characterize link asymmetry in *** are several factors that contribute to link asymmetry in WSNs, the major ones being environmental effects and hardware performance. In this work, we used a systematic approach to measure the effects of hardware performance, i.e. transmitter, receiver and antenna characteristics, on link asymmetry using off-the-shelf WSN devices such as Xbow Mica2 and MicaZ motes. We conducted experiments to study the variations in spectrum utilization in these WSN devices, for both wired and wireless connections, and to ascertain the effects of any frequency and amplitude mismatches on link symmetry between nodes in transmission and reception.

Connected devices are becoming more ubiquitous, but powering them remains a challenge. the Wireless Identification and Sensing Platform (WISP) is a fully programmable device capable of energy harvesting and backscatter communication. It can accommodate a variety of sensing modalities and operate without batteries or a wired power supply, making it a suitable device for ubiquitous computing. A new version of WISP is presented. WISP-6.0 is designed to be low-power, modular, and enable dual energy harvesting from sources like a solar panel. Additionally, an upgraded cross-platform host application is built using the latest web technologies. Compared to its predecessor, WISP-5.1, WISP-6.0 consumes 13.62% and 6.29% less power in active accelerometer and active acknowledgment modes respectively. Furthermore, WISP-6.0 is better able to harvest RF energy collected from its antenna, with the greatest improvements at higher input powers.

Recent years have seen increasing traction to enable new applications that can localize sensors on the screen of an Augmented Reality (AR) device (e.g. smartphone, tablet) so that sensors can be controlled more intuitively. Despite recent advances in this area, both wireless signal dependent and computer vision based localization solutions have seen a slow acceptance due to signal noise, multipath effect, and limited AR device-sensor interactivity. In this paper, we propose a novel solution to combine the complementary advantages of wireless signal based localization solution with the computer vision based solution to track IoT devices and sensors more accurately. Experimental result shows that our system can accurately track IoT devices with an average pixel error of 34 pixels in a 1024 × 768 pixels image, which is a 75.8% improvement from the state-of-the-art model.

In this paper, we present a real time remote triggered laboratory which has multi-set, multi-group of wireless sensor network experimental setup which is envisioned to provide a practical experience of designing and implementing wireless sensor networks' algorithms in both indoor and outdoor conditions. the architecture provides a remote code editing mechanism using deluge protocol that offers the user a flexible environment for the experimentation. Central and local authentication agents serve a two level security mechanism which makes the system robust to security threats. the lab is accessible for all the students in the world through internet and it will provide an intuitive web-based interface, where registered users can access the code and do code editing.

the promise of individualized care for improving animal welfare demands real-time continuous monitoring of animals. While technology has helped crop agriculture realize the goals of precision care, animal agriculture is still lacking domain-adapted technology. In this work, we present a novel Criticality-Aware Self-Powered in-vivo sensing Edge for pRecision animal agriculture, CASPER. Enabling real-time monitoring of a suite of biomarkers while scavenging power from both thermal and physiological sources, CASPER promises unprecedented adaptability, range, and life-cycle for such an edge node. Field deployments show that CASPER generates 30mW of power with a surplus of 9.08mW, during the ultra-low power mode. the criticality-aware control is proven to capture deviation in trends of biomarker activity that would be missed in fixed-interval transmission. Hence proving the validity and effectiveness of CASPER.

the force feedback absence in minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) is a chronic problem. the main obstacle is the intensive magnetic resonance (MR) influence on traditional electronic signals. this paper proposes a miniature and MR compatible optical force sensor based on Fabry-Perot interference (FPI) principle and interferometric-intensity modulation method. the FPI sensor, with 400μm outer diameter, is embedded in the tip of a rigid puncture needle with 1.0mm inner diameter. the sensor is simulated and fabricated, followed by signal processing using Fourier and wavelet transform analysis. Calibration results at 20 °C show that the force sensing range and resolution are 0-5N and 0.1N, respectively. Silicon rubber skin phantom insertion experiments suggest that the FPI sensor could identify clearly the type of tissues during the insertion and extraction procedure.

sensor networks have been used in a wide range of applications. Considerable research effort is currently devoted to design protocols that allow networks of inexpensive sensors to perform reliable remote control and monitoring functions, in spite of the limitations of each *** objective is to demonstrate a fully software implementation of the so called Pulse Coupled Oscillator Protocol, proposed in [2, 6] for the decentralized synchronization of radio devices. the PCO protocol is inspired by a model found in mathematical biology [5]. It is decentralized, scalable and simple, as we will show in our demonstration.

State-of-the-art systems applied to museums solve specific problems like monitoring the environment for artworks conservation, or detecting specific events to prevent vandalism, theft attempts or unauthorized access. Usually, each problem is solved by a dedicated surveillance system able to face with a single specific task. WSN-based architectures represent a powerful backbone for surveillance thanks to the distributed sensing capabilities, flexibility and easy deployment. Usually, the nodes of the network are equipped with embedded devices that locally acquire the information to be successively aggregated and processed by a central unit. the investigated solution goes beyond sensor limitations since an alternative methodology that exploits also the wireless links among the nodes of the network has been proposed to extract information about visitor presence and movement, as well as intrusions in restricted areas.

In this demo, we present interoperability between Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and IPv6 routing protocol for low power and lossy networks (RPL). To make the operation of RPL over BLE feasible, we design an adaptation layer between BLE and RPL, termed ALBER. Specifically, we develop three technical features in ALBER which enable BLE to be combined with RPL. First, it broadcasts RPL control messages through BLE using advertising channels with low energy consumption. Second, it updates RPL routing table considering connection management of BLE. Lastly, it estimates link quality based on round trip time of link layer ping packets to provide routing metric for RPL. We implement our ALBER on Linux kernel. this demo will present an operation example of RPL over BLE using ALBER in a small scale multi-hop topology, where each node comprises a Raspberry Pi platform and a BLE dongle.

Pervasive computing applications involve both software concerns, like any software system, and integration concerns, for the constituent networked devices of the pervasive computing environment. this situation is problematic for testing because it requires acquiring, testing and interfacing a variety of software and hardware entities. this process can rapidly become costly and time-consuming when the target environment involves many entities. this paper introduces DiaSim, a simulator for pervasive computing applications. To cope with widely heterogeneous entities, DiaSim is parameterized with respect to a description of a target pervasive computing environment. this description is used to generate both a programming framework to develop the simulation logic and an emulation layer to execute applications. Furthermore, a simulation renderer is coupled to DiaSim to allow a simulated pervasive system to be visually monitored and debugged. DiaSim has been implemented and used to simulate various pervasive computing systems in different application areas, demonstrating the generality of our parameterized approach.
