EcoPlex is an infrastructure that enables simple wireless platforms to participate seamlessly in a feature-rich, wireless ad hoc network. EcoPlex consists of gateways that are responsible for handoff support for mobility and high data rate without burdening the simple nodes to implement multi-hop protocols. the gateways also create virtual identities for simpler nodes to enable their participation in the feature-rich network without adding complexity to them. We demonstrate the feasibility of this idea with the ultra-compact wireless sensor platform called Eco to participate as virtual nodes in a fully general ZigBee network. Experimental results show EcoPlex to be efficient and scalable. the enhanced mobility and interoperability are added to the Eco platform at the infrastructure level, all with minimal node complexity.

the commercialization of cheap unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is starting to change the way we, as sensor network system designers, think of data collection. Especially, UAVs provide a third dimension of mobile data collection as we can now traverse the sky with minimal obstacles, rather than rovering the ground with wheeled robots. However, despite UAVs or drones being an interesting platform with the potential to change sensor network deployment topologies, little do we understand on how data collection will perform "in the air". In this work we present a preliminary empirical study on the performance of aerial data collection using an IEEE 802.15.4 radio-equipped drone connecting itself to sensor nodes positioned on the ground. Our results show that a drone-based data collection platform outperforms that of an "at ground-level" data collection unit, despite being at identical distances. Based on this study, we identify the increased data collection height and "easy-to-achieve" line-of-sight as key features that make this possible.

We present a holistic architecture for energy management in sensor networks. Our architecture is based on a model-driven approach which attempts to (a) establish functional relationships across different components of the software stack and the interrelated parameters based on empirical data, (b) use the maximum sensor value and time-synchronization errors acceptable by the users of the sensor network application as input to establish minimum quality of service requirements, and (c) optimize the parameter values of all the software modules within the node's application stack to minimize total energy consumption for each sensor node. We explore the trade-offs of the design space by using a non-trivial application that includes sensing, time synchronization and routing modules and show that when using our architecture, we can provide energy savings in the average of 37% to 76% while still maintaining quality of service both in terms of the expected sensing and time-synchronization errors. We further show that even when using modules that perform significantly better than others with default values (e.g. ORW >> CTP), we can still reduce overall energy consumption by properly adjusting the parameters of lowest performance modules and provide energy savings in the average of 30% to 43%.

Developing analytical applications for IoT based on sensor signal processing tends to be complicated as applications are executed as sequence of steps comprising of multiple alternative algorithms, including suitable feature extraction modules depending on the goal of the application. Experience shows that developers spend considerable time and effort in performing feature extraction and dimensionality reduction. In this paper we propose a framework based on a relevant case study which allows developers to drag and drop algorithms to create a workflow chain, automatically select the most relevant signal features for the particular analytic application using a training data set to generate a model and deploy the model for use. the method reduces the effort and cost of development which is deemed highly important for the analytics industry.

embedded systems that are wirelessly reprogrammed can be rendered useless by certain programming errors, excessive power consumption, or misconfigurations in the hardware. these types of situations can leave a device in a state that compromises its programmability, often rendering the device useless. Existing attempts to address the problem of robust wireless reprogramming have all been software-based solutions, that are vulnerable to certain errors, such as memory corruption, can corrupt the recovery programs. We propose a hardware-based solution to wireless reprogramming, physically separating the programmer and target device. this separation limits the propagation of errors, and ensures the device will always be recoverable. In this poster we will present the design and an early prototype of our approach -- an ultra-low-power, low-cost hardware solution to ensure recovery from fatal errors and reprogrammability in wireless systems. this poster discusses the current system design, initial results, and system analysis from our current prototype. We also present future and ongoing directions, as well as key research questions. this work was funded by National Science Foundation grants CNS-1314342 and CNS-1453607. Recently, surveillance systems for public safety have become more intelligent through context awareness. Basically, traditional surveillance systems require power and networking infrastructure to operate the system and to transmit recorded data. these requirements increase the cost of system installation and maintenance. this paper proposes a wireless video sensor network platform for public safety. the proposed platform includes a high-resolution surveillance system, wireless networking platform, and smart functions. Even though the platform captures high-resolution images and transmits them via high speed wireless networks, such as Wi-Fi Mesh (IEEE 802.11s), the system and the network are energy efficient by decomposing the system and the network into two systems: low-power and high-performance. the proposed system and platform can be used for wireless back born networks and for infrastructure of wireless sensor networks. this paper also deals with applications of the proposed system and platform.

Wearable electronics is increasingly attracting researchers and manufacturers for the application opportunities it opens. Chip makers are responding to the hot wearable-computer trend with new components, microcontrollers and sensors. the most critical challenge is the autonomy of the systems. Even if battery management can help in extending the lifetime, the trade-off between features given by a multisensory platforms and autonomy can determine if a platform will win or not in the marketplace. In this paper we present a bracelet device, which attempts to maximize the capability of sensors on board, while still keeping the energy consumption low. Aggressive power management and an accurate selection of the sensors are addressed in this paper to demonstrate the effectiveness of our design.

In recent years, Silicon nanowires (SiNW)-based ISFET devices have been selected as promising better sensors because of their advantages such as real-time detection and the good sensitivity caused by high surface-to-volume ratio. In this work, a mathematical model is evaluated to study the performance of the SiNW ISFET sensor. Furthermore, the effects of the parameters such as the NW width (Wtop) and the gate insulator capacity COX on the performance of the SiNW ISFET sensor are investigated. the planar-ISFET structure and Si-nw-ISFET technology are also examined in our simulation and compared. Finally, the mathematical model of SiNW ISFET is verified with the experimental measurements and with other models indicated in the literature, gives a good accuracy at different pH values. © 2022, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring and agricultural applications often face long-range requirements at low bit-rates together with large numbers of nodes. Most existing wireless sensor networks use nodes with a short-range radio and use software protocols to schedule the nodes and co-ordinate multi-hop routing in order to minimise power usage. Nodes have a relatively small radio range up to a few hundred meters that is also affected by the crop growth stage and vegetation density [2]. Disadvantages of this approach include the complexity of software protocols required to co-ordinate the nodes' behaviour and the unreliable nature of the short range radio links that requires sophisticated fault tolerance mechanisms. An alternative design solution is to use low frequency, long-range radios to build a single-hop network of a base station with satellite sensing nodes [4]. this approach has the benefits of much simpler software protocols, and that transmissions in the 40 MHz band are expected to be more reliable in outdoor settings than short range transmission in the 433 MHz or 915 MHz band used by most existing sensor network radios.

there is a growing interest in increasing the flexibility and the mobility of industrial infrastructures to support novel industrial applications. To support this change, industrial networks must provide real-time guarantees while integrating a great variety of traffic over a cohesive network infrastructure. Specifically, there is special interest in the integration of wired and wireless communications in the industrial domain. We present a solution that integrates a Time-Sensitive Networking Ethernet network with a low-power 6TiSCH IoT network and discuss the implementation alternatives and their implications on delay and resource consumption. the main goal is to experimentally identify the research challenges and necessary enhancements for interoperability between constrained battery-driven wireless communication with the time sensitive wired networks.
