the number of elders who encounter falling accidents has been increasing in the past few decades. Falling accidents could cause major injuries, such as having bruise, breaking bone, and in the worst case, losing life. therefore, preventing elders from falling accidents is important in order to ensure the quality of life. In this paper, we propose Fatigue Alerting SHoes (FASH), a pair of shoes which detects the fatigue of walking people. there are three effects of fatigue on gait, and FASH system acquires all of them to improve the accuracy of fatigue detection. FASH system uses pressure sensors embedded in a pair of shoes to detect the tiredness, and notifies the user of ldquoTiredness Scale,rdquo a scale we defined in order to show the degree of tiredness. through the evaluation, we affirmed the availability of using pressure sensor to detect accumulation of tiredness. We also confirmed the difference between the physical tiredness and the subjective feeling toward tiredness, which signifies the importance of acknowledging the user of his/her fatigue.

Next to traditional communication systems like servers or routers at the backbone and personal computers or laptops acting as clients, the Future Internet will additionally comprise many so-called smart objects. Most of everyday devices like coffee machines, fridges, or light switches will participate in this Internet of things (IoT).Small-sized computers will connect these devices to the network by establishing low power wireless links. To achieve this vision various kinds of wireless multi-hop networks (WMHNs) play an important role. During the last years, it has become clear that test bed-based research is mandatory in order to develop suitable protocol implementations and metrics for these networks. In this article, we review network configurations for wireless networks for the IoT. We describe the DES-Test bed at the Freie Universitat Berlin as an experimental facility to study these network configurations. In addition to the infrastructure and software provided by the test bed, we introduce μkleos as a micro kernel based operating system for embedded devices. We designed μkleos with a special focus on Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) to complement our approach to study WMHNs. μkleos provides an implementation of 6LoWPAN to interconnect WSNs to IP-based networks.

the development of sensor monitoring systems for rotating machinery is important in automating industrial machine monitoring. Traditionally, the primary method for monitoring rotating machinery involved wired sensors such as accelerometers that were attached to the housing of the component under operation. However, this approach has a limitation since it cannot capture vibrations from the rotating part underneath the housing. Vibration measurements are crucial for machine health monitoring and analysis. Wireless vibration monitoring offers many benefits over wired monitoring. thus, we implemented a wireless monitoring system using an embedded system design as a reliable option. A wireless monitoring system based on MEMS accelerometers with 3-axis digital outputs was used to measure vibrations ranging from -10 g to 10 g and temperature in a range from 0 to +70 °C. the system used the IEEE 802.11 wireless communication protocol and ESP modules. All the sensors were connected to a microcontroller and integrated into a printed circuit board, and the signals, data logging, and alarms were integrated into a PC platform using National Instruments LabVIEW software. the proposed monitoring system was embedded in a planetary gearbox to test its capabilities. the experimental results showed that the proposed wireless monitoring system could monitor gearbox vibrations in real-time, rendering data in the time domain, frequency domain, and root mean square. the data log files were used for vibration analysis. the research result verified the reliability and effectiveness of the wireless monitoring system by analyzing and diagnosing the vibration measurement signals.

this paper presents NFCapsule, a light-weight, battery-free, and ingestible biomedical sensor that can potentially enable non-invasive detection of active eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). EoE is an allergen-induced inflammatory condition of the esophagus; its diagnosis generally involves invasive, wired, and time-consuming endoscopy. In contrast, NFCapsule aims to wirelessly detect active EoE by tracking tissue impedance through an ingestible pill that the patient swallows. Specifically, recent biomedical research has shown that active EoE induces observable changes in the electrochemical impedance of the esophagus tissue due to an increase in its intercellular spacing. We design the NFCapsule pill based on RLC resonant circuits and model the target tissue as an impedance component that changes the resonant properties of the pill circuit. Further, the NFCapsule reader identifies the resonant properties of the pill by consistently monitoring the amount of energy transferred to the pill as it goes through the esophagus, and converts this information to estimates of bio-impedance. We implement NFCapsule pill prototypes with flexible polyimide PCBs and gelatin capsules (27 mm in height and 10 mm in diameter) and evaluated NFCapsule with both ionic agarose hydrogel models and ex vivo porcine esophageal tissues (no human patients involved). We show that NFCapsule maintains high classification accuracy under various practical scenarios (e.g., blockage, bending, movement, etc.) and achieves 85% average accuracy between healthy and unhealthy tissue samples.

Speech is one of the most important biological signals to complement human-human and human-computer interaction. Traditional speech datasets were collected by air microphones, but using these datasets in noisy environments such as factories is practically challenging. therefore, speech recognition in noisy environments poses higher requirements. the non-acoustic speech dataset plays a significant role in robust speech recognition under high background noise. Existing datasets suffered from dull sound, low intelligibility and poor recognition accuracy due to hardware and computer technology limitations. this paper presents a non-acoustic speech sensing system based on flexible piezoelectric. the system collected vibration signals from the jaws of six males and five females, and the corpus contained ten different control commands at 90 dB of background noise. the dataset is reliable with high intelligibility and capable of achieving 93.7% recognition accuracy by calculation. With the aforementioned benefits, this dataset is an essential tool for studying human-computer interaction in high-noise environments, analyzing human acoustic properties, and aiding medical rehabilitation.

Many threads packages have been proposed for programming wireless sensor platforms. However, many sensor network operating systems still choose to provide an event-driven model, due to efficiency concerns. We present TOS-threads, a threads package for TinyOS that combines the ease of a threaded programming model with the efficiency of an event-based kernel. TOSthreads is backwards compatible with existing TinyOS code, supports an evolvable, thread-safe kernel API, and enables flexible application development through dynamic linking and loading. In TOS-threads, TinyOS code runs at a higher priority than application threads and all kernel operations are invoked only via message passing, never directly, ensuring thread-safety while enabling maximal concurrency. the TOSthreads package is non-invasive; it does not require any large-scale changes to existing TinyOS *** demonstrate that TOSthreads context switches and system calls introduce an overhead of less than 0.92% and that dynamic linking and loading takes as little as 90 ms for a representative sensing application. We compare different programming models built using TOSthreads, including standard C with blocking system calls and a reimplementation of Tenet. Additionally, we demonstrate that TOSthreads is able to run computationally intensive tasks without adversely affecting the timing of critical OS services.

A novel fully wearable system based on a smart wristband equipped with stretchable strain gauge sensors and readout electronics have been assembled and tested to detect a set of movements of a hand crucial in rehabilitation procedures. the high sensitivity of the active devices embedded on the wristband do not need a direct contact with the skin, thus maximizing the comfort on the arm of the tester. the gestures done with the device have been auto-labeled by comparing the signals detected in real-time by the sensors with a commercial infrared device (Leap motion). Finally, the system has been evaluated with two machine-learning algorithms Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), reaching a reproducibility of 98% and 94%, respectively.

In most industrial automation systems, all machines and equipment must operate smoothly and continuously to maintain the system performance. therefore, all kinds of unexpected failures of the system cannot be accepted. For this reason, the maintenance processes are the essential operations performed periodically to avoid system failures. Of course, this operation takes time and resources, but it cannot be avoided. It is known that most automation systems compose of electrical motors. they are the core devices for robots and other movable machines. Each motor produces meaningful parameters such as temperature, vibration, speed, noise, and power consumption. this paper presents the design and development techniques of the IoT-based embedded device that can be used for real-time monitoring and analysis of the unexpected operations of motors. the proposed device continuously senses and analyzes motor parameters to monitor and predict unexpected operations. We focus on temperature and unbalanced phenomenal measurement of the motors. the unbalanced parameter is implicitly measured from the speed changes using the time measurement of the sensing signals. the proposed device also supports wireless real-time data exchange to the server. the device and server exchange their data using the WebSockets protocol. the data sent to the server can be used for storage, processing, and monitoring. In this work, we also develop a web-based application that allows users to control and monitor the parameters of motors in real-time. the experimental results show that the proposed method can detect the unbalance operations and temperature of the motors at different operations. therefore, the proposed system can be used in real-world applications that require abnormality detection, abnormal condition warning, and prediction of mechanical devices.

Air pollution problem has caught much attention globally. In addition to the national air quality monitoring stations deployed by the government, the number of low-cost air quality sensors increases rapidly as a supplement to support fine-grained monitoring. In-field calibration methods are necessary for these low-cost sensor nodes to assure the data quality. However, it is costly to collect enough reference data after deployment to train the in-field calibration model and many sensors even have no synchronized reference in the real application scenarios. To address the above challenge, we propose a multi-task learning based blind calibraiton method for air quality sensors after deployments. Our method introduces not only the reference data of the target location to formulate calibration task, but also reference measurements collected from highly accurate stations already deployed by the government in other geographical locations to formulate prediction task. To utilize the reference measurements which are not in the same location with our target sensors, e.g., in other cities, we combine the proposed calibration task and prediction task under a multi-task learning scheme. the introduced references in other locations alleviate our few-reference challenge. Furthermore, we elaborate on the choices of different tasks to have better effect of the target calibraiton task. Evaluations on the real-world collected datasets show that our proposed algorithm has better calibraiton effect.

the Internet of things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm that seamlessly integrates smart devices, sensor nodes, network gateways, actuators, radio frequency identification and merges various technologies such as pervasive computing, sensing techniques, embedded devices and ubiquitous computing in order to form an intelligent systems. the smart objects within the IoT environment not only gather information from physical world but also exchanges information through the Internet to develop a common operating framework. the data and information obtained from huge number of interconnected devices create services that bring tangible benefits to individual citizens and society. this paper presents the architectural elements and key features of IoT. In addition to identifying various challenges and application areas, we focus on future scope and open issues for world wide implementation of Internet of things.
