Wireless sensor Networks have been deployed for environmental monitoring, home automation, and advanced metering application fields among others. Only few examples of monitoring cargo transports by Wireless sensor Networks have been reported on. the authors have deployed mobile Wireless sensor Networks in a cargo container on a trans-atlantic cargo vessel as well as on a lorry to monitor the transport conditions inside the container. this submission reports on the experiences gained from those particular deployments and the open research issues for mobile Wireless sensor Networks for logistics.

the current rapid development and deployment of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and their application in mission critical systems are exacerbating the need for high confidence WSNs. Achieving high confidence WSNs will require new assurance technologies. Most current solutions deal with faults and reliability and not with application level semantics and associated assurances. We propose the use of a novel WSN design and assurance mechanism, run time assurance (RTA), to guarantee that important application-level requirements are met in mission critical applications.

We describe Tethys, an energy-harvesting wireless water flow sensorthat can monitor water use at a per-fixture level withthe intention of associating water use with specific individuals. Tethys was motivated by recent efforts at Stanford University to reduce water use due to the California drought. Understanding how the university population uses water at per-person level can greatly influence policies and conservation approaches. Tethys uses Bluetooth Smart to both identify individuals as well as asynchronously upload data to the cloud for later analysis. We describe two challenges encountered in deploying Tethys: energy harvesting design and the mechanical considerations for high-pressure water at high temperatures.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are often advertised with high sensing accuracy, long lifetime, and easy deployment. However, they are still not widely used in environmental research due to of poor tool support and high complexity. A wider use of WSNs in field science would enable researchers to address scientific questions that are infeasible today. To address this issue, we designed and prototyped a Software Factory for WSNs that hides the complexity of software development for embeddedsystems. It exposes a visual domain-specific modeling language and supports code generation for resource constrained devices. the proposed Software Factory simplifies the integration of domain experts into the development process, making WSNs more attractive as a tool for researchers from outside of the computer science field. this could lead to a wider adoption of WSNs in field sciences.

For decades sensing systems have relied solely on battery power for execution of all activities;this has caused the focus of much research to go towards reducing energy consumption to extend the usable lifetime of a sensor. Recently, a new class of batteryless devices has arisen that promise operation in perpetuity, but often at the cost of reliability, and complexity. Programming, profiling, debugging, and building these applications is a significant challenge;designers must often be capable of implementing custom hardware to manage energy, while writing code in an environment that does not guarantee task completion. In this abstract, we motivate batteryless sensing, examine the state of the art, and propose a novel approach to programming, profiling, debugging, and building, tiny, batteryless sensors.

HONS (Hybrid Open Networking Stack) is a system which can service diverse types of sensor nodes as a single network. By defining open packet format of IEEE 802.15.4 standard, it can form low-power multi-hop network of diverse sensors. HONS system is composed of routers and wireless sensor nodes. Routers are motes with wired power and form the basic backbone of the multi-hop network. Wireless sensor nodes are motes powered by battery, and operate in a lower-power mode, and are attached to the multi-hop network formed by routers.
