In software engineering, design smells can make software systems harder to maintain and lower their overall quality. Traditional methods, primarily focusing on code-level analysis, often miss design inconsistencies that manifest during the design phase. this paper introduces a light weight approach that leverages the Web Ontology Language (OWL) to detect design smells at the software design level. By incorporating ontological reasoning and automated checks against established design principles, the approach offers a proactive strategy for identifying and addressing design smells before they escalate into more significant issues in the implementation phase. We demonstrate the approach’s effectiveness through its application to several open-source Java projects, achieving notable precision and recall rates.

In control theory, optimization is a process that makes some system behavior as likelihood, functional, or practical as possible (depending on the design requirements). From a mathematical point of view, optimization is a way to find the minimum or maximum of the mathematical function by which the system is described. Moreover, if there is a time delay in the feedback loops inside a controlled system, the system has an infinite spectrum – infinitely many roots (poles);this degrades the control's quality, especially in terms of stability, robustness, and oscillation response. For these reasons, it is necessary to optimize the system transient response. this paper will compare selected heuristic methods of optimization of linear-time invariant (LTI) systems with time delay in an integral part of the P/I-delayed controller. Some examples are chosen as benchmarks to verify the effectiveness of the optimization. In future research, we would like to focus on implementing selected modern optimization algorithms for solving non-smooth, non-convex, and non-Lipschitz optimization problems. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A suspension system is designed to attenuate vibrations and enhance passengers’ comfort levels when a vehicle traverses uneven road contours. With additional power to control the actuators’ force, the active suspension system produces better ride quality than passive suspension systems. System modeling will be carried out using a quarter-vehicle model with a disturbance input form of a step input of 0.1 m. In this study, the control system used is the PID controller, with the parameters of the controller being tuned using the Back Propagation Neural Network-Genetic Algorithm (BPNN-GA) metaheuristic method employing MATLAB R2022b software. In this method, BPNN is used to produce a network that represents the correlation between controller parameters (i.e., Kp, Ki, and Kd) and system response (i.e., Integral Times Absolute Error (ITAE)). the ITAE value represents the value of Settling Time (Ts) and Peak Overshoot (PO) in a damping system. Next, the Genetic Algorithm (GA) is employed to determine the best BPNN's network with a minimum MSE (Mean Squared Error) value. the performance of BPNN-GA is then compared with Ziegler Nichols method. the best BPNN’s network is obtained with five hidden layers, ten nodes in each hidden layer, and the satlin activation function achieving an MSE training value of 1.6477 × 10–8. the most optimum Kp, Ki, and Kd values are identified through the BPNN-GA method, namely 809193, 621978, and 243984, with a settling time (TS) value of 1.33 s and a peak overshoot of −0.00834 m, along with a Root Mean Square (RMS) value of 0.5747 m/s2. Moreover, in accordance with the ISO 2631 standard, the active suspension system model is classified as slightly uncomfortable. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

the proliferation of Internet of things (IoT) devices and the advent of 6G technologies have introduced computationally intensive tasks that often surpass the processing capabilities of user devices. Efficient and secure resource allocation in serverless multi-cloud edge computing environments is essential for supporting these demands and advancing distributed computing. However, existing solutions frequently struggle with the complexity of multi-cloud infrastructures, robust security integration, and effective application of traditional deep reinforcement learning (DRL) techniques under system constraints. To address these challenges, we present SARMTO, a novel framework that integrates an action-constrained DRL model. SARMTO dynamically balances resource allocation, task offloading, security, and performance by utilizing a Markov decision process formulation, an adaptive security mechanism, and sophisticated optimization techniques. Extensive simulations across varying scenarios-including different task loads, data sizes, and MEC capacities-show that SARMTO consistently outperforms five baseline approaches, achieving up to a 40% reduction in system costs and a 41.5% improvement in energy efficiency over state-of-the-art methods. these enhancements highlight SARMTO ’s potential to revolutionize resource management in intricate distributed computing environments, opening the door to more efficient and secure IoT and edge computing applications. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Ensuring the user interface (UI) compatibility of web applications across diverse client-side configurations, including various operating systems and browsers, is a significant challenge due to the extensive range of possible combinations. Traditional tools often struggle to address this complexity, leading to visual inconsistencies and malfunctions. To improve compatibility testing, we propose a meta-model that initiates the process with a checklist covering critical configurations across different browsers. this checklist is then translated into Interaction Flow Modeling Language (IFML) constructs, enabling a model-driven approach to compatibility assessment. By leveraging this checklist-IFML integration, we systematically generate test cases that target compatibility issues more effectively. Our approach is validated through the Laptop-Web Case Study, where we assess compatibility by comparing checklist items with IFML constructs within the case study’s domain model. the results show that our approach enhances the accuracy and efficiency of compatibility testing, addressing a core gap in current methods. this research introduces a structured, model-driven method for compatibility testing, providing a more reliable framework for identifying and mitigating UI compatibility issues in web applications across varying client-side configurations.

High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems play a pivotal role in addressing complex computational challenges across various domains, but their escalating energy consumption has raised concerns regarding sustainability and operational costs. this paper presents a comprehensive investigation into the parametrization and modeling of energy consumption in heterogeneous HPC systems, aiming to provide valuable insights for optimizing energy efficiency while preserving performance. We begin by characterizing the heterogeneity within modern HPC environments, which encompass diverse hardware components, such as CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and accelerators. Our research delves into modeling techniques, leveraging heuristics methods and statistical approaches to construct accurate predictive models for energy consumption. Furthermore, we explore the integration of dynamic power management strategies, such as DVFS (Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling) and task scheduling, to optimize energy usage without compromising performance. this paper provides a vital foundation for sustainable HPC practices, enabling researchers and practitioners to make informed decisions for achieving enhanced energy efficiency without sacrificing computational performance. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.
