As a part of the development of the New International Airport of Mexico City (NAICM), vacuum consolidation has been proposed around Passenger Terminal Building (PTB). A compensated foundation system has been developed for PTB and Gate-house while ground improvement using vacuum consolidation has been considered for the rest of the surrounding areas. the vacuum consolidation is intended to limit long-term differential settlements between the PTB and Apron along with pre-stressing the ground to carry repeated heavy aircraft loading. As Lake Texcoco clays have never been treated using vacuum preloading technique in past, trials were proposed to establish the effectiveness of this technique. Two separate trials were undertaken with and without membrane such that contractor could have the flexibility to choose either method for the main works. A series of 2D Finite Elements (FE) analyses were carried to back-analyse the monitored behaviour of both trials in term of vertical and lateral displacements, and pore pressure measurements. the paper provides detailed information on the two trials undertaken. the results from the FE back-analyses and their comparison with the measurements are presented. the performance of both trials has been discussed and conclusions have been made on the effectiveness of methods of vacuum consolidation for Lake Texcoco clays. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019.

Binary solid spherical particle-particle interactions are studied in forced isotropic turbulence at Re-lambda = 29 and 197 using direct numerical simulation and an immersed boundary method. Isotropic turbulence in a periodic box is forced using a linear forcing method to maintain statistically stationary turbulence, with inter-particle interaction modelled using DLVO interaction forces which include attraction and repulsion due to van der Waals and electric double layer potential forces, respectively. Particle collisions are modelled using the inelastic hard sphere model with a coefficient of restitution of 0.4. the DLVO parameters are chosen to be representative of calcite particles, a simulant of nuclear waste material found in storage ponds in the UK. the Reynolds numbers chosen for the boxes are equivalent to typical values of Re-lambda that are found in the bulk flow and viscous sub-layer regions of a turbulent channel flow at Re-tau = 180. the techniques described are used to study the dynamics of critical Stokes number particles in turbulence by analysing probability density functions (PDFs) of collision statistics such as particle displacement and the particles' relative velocities to determine the likelihood of agglomeration. the results indicate that agglomeration can occur in both the Re-lambda turbulent boxes considered. However, the occurrence is much more likely at lower Re-lambda values due to the higher dispersion of kinetic energy after impact.

Vortex methods are a powerful tool for solving engineering problems of incompressible flow simulation at small subsonic speeds. the main idea is to consider vorticity as a primary computed variable. Vorticity distribution is simulated by a set of elementary vorticity carriers - vortex elements. their velocity in the flow is a sum of the convective and diffusive ones. the simplest way to compute the convective velocity of each vortex element is to summarize the influences of all the other vortices, it should be done at every time step. Such problem is similar to the N-body gravitational problem, its computational complexity is proportional to N-2 (N is number of vortices). this fact restricts significantly the applicability of vortex methods. Two approximate fast methods of logarithmic (N log N) computational complexity are implemented and investigated. the first method is analogous of the Barnes Hut fast method for the gravitational N-body problem;the second one is based on the possibility of convolution integral fast calculation through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique with further results correction, which permits to take into account the influence of closely-spaced vortices. Sequential and parallel implementations of both methods are developed. numerical experiments show that the FFT-based method is more efficient in comparison to the Barnes - Hut method;it provides the acceleration of about 1000 times for the velocities calculation for N = 500 000 vortex elements (in comparison to the direct "point-to-point" calculation). the number of mesh cells doesn't effect the method accuracy, however it determines the computational complexity of the algorithm. It is found that the mesh size should be chosen according to the derived estimation of the algorithm's numerical complexity and available computational resources.

the present work uses a fully coupled direct numerical simulation-Lagrangian particle tracking solver in conjunction with an interaction energy-based deterministic agglomeration algorithm to determine the effect of particle diameter on the aggregation properties of a wall-bounded, particle-laden channel flow at shear Reynolds number, Re-tau = 180. three primary particle diameters are considered of relevance to the nuclear industry resembling 200 mu m - 400 mu m calcite particles dispersed in water, with a Hamaker constant of 3.8X10(-20) J. the simulations are initialized with randomly dispersed particles of numbers calculated to ensure a constant volume fraction Phi(P) = 10(-3). Analysis is focused on elucidating the collision and agglomeration behaviour throughout the channel flow over time. A statistically steady state for collision and agglomeration rate is observed 10 non-dimensional time units after the particles have been injected which persists until at least t* = 50. Results indicate a decrease in particle agglomeration efficiency as diameter is increased, which provides for a reduction in agglomeration rate at large time scales as the particles begin to aggregate and the mean agglomerate diameter increases. Further to this, the normalized number of collisions is similar in all simulations, with the smallest particles showing a slightly increased collision rate. Arguments associated with energy dispersed in collisions are presented to substantiate these findings. Collision rates across the channel are approximately constant with an increase close to the walls which, when normalized by the total number of primary particles, are actually favoured by smaller particles. Finally, agglomeration outcomes after a collision are shown to be more likely towards the channel centreline, since the particle dynamics in this region favour collisions with low relative velocity.

the protection of art goods is an important issue of the seismic engineering. Artifacts are often made by fragile and ancient material, and they can easily present irregular shapes and high slenderness. In these years many contributions have been devoted to their analysis, based on numerical models having different complexity and computational effort. the Finite Element Models represent the most common and versatile approach for the representation of artifacts. Nevertheless, their reliability depends on the numerical assumptions made for the analysis, which requires a wide number of information regarding the dynamic behavior of the artifacts, such as the friction between the analyzed object and its support, the effective damping, the inelastic involvement of material, etc. In this work an experimental campaign has been started aimed at determining the main factors which affect the dynamic representation of artifacts through FEM analysis and simplified models. A large number of experimental tests, both static and dynamic, have been performed, by adopting both real and reduced scale objects. © 2019 the authors.

the evaluation of axial bearing capacity of piles plays an essential role in foundation design. It can be estimated by theoretical methods, through an analytical or numerical solution, or by semi-empirical methods, whose application is generally based on field test results. Semi-empirical formulations are often preferred by geotechnical engineers since theoretical approaches are generally limited to particular applications. this paper compares the axial bearing capacity of bored piles estimated by different methodologies, based on instrumented load tests carried out in the Campinas and the Brasilia university campi, in Brazil. the semi-empirical approach involved settlement control and extrapolation of load-settlement curve while the theoretical approach was based on both analytical and numerical solutions, the latter computed through finite element analyses. When compared to the bearing capacity measured in the instrumented load tests, both numerical and the settlement control results showed close agreement, while the extrapolation of the load-settlement curve estimated higher than expected results and the theoretical method presented conservative values when introducing the negative skin friction effects. © 2019, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

this paper proposes two computation schemes for efficient evaluation of sets of reliability analyses associated with different time intervals. the first approach is based on sequential solving the reliability analyses starting from the last time interval. It enables to use the solution of a time interval as a starting point and to efficiently solve the reliability problem of preceding time intervals. Its implementation combined with Subset Simulation (SuS) and Sequential Importance Sampling (SIS) is presented. the second proposed approach is centered around reformulating the limit state function in a way that the time to failure can be described. this allows to efficiently obtain the estimates of failure probabilities and corresponding time intervals by one run of SuS. the numerical verification demonstrates that the proposed methods are capable of obtaining accurate estimates of lifetime reliability with a substantially reduced computational cost. © 13th International conference on Applications of Statistics and Probability in Civil engineering, ICASP 2019. In the STAMP model, based on control theory, the control relationships between various system elements enforced by the closed Control Loops (CLs) are logical and functional. A literature survey emphasized the fact that for the moment STAMP and its main tools STPA and CAST are not associated with any numerical tools. the main rationale of our work is to understand whether STAMP matches to be a quantitative model. Furthermore, in a case that we find that numerical tools can be used in STAMP, we intend to bridge the gap between the logical-functional approach in STAMP and any of the suitable quantitative approaches applied in engineering Control theory (ECT). As a first step, a literature comparison was performed between the basic control parameters existing explicitly at the moment in the STAMP model, and those well known in the literature of ECT. the results reveal that there are many similar terms, especially related to conceptual and general definitions. However, we have observed that there are also basic quantitative parameters from ECT which are not yet referred to in STAMP as quantitative safety evaluation parameters. Another main finding is an inherent difference in various ECT related parameters and the CLs at the various hierarchical levels. ECT was originally developed to deal with physical systems. thus, any machine related internal control loops within the lower-physical level of a Sociotechnical System (STS) can be directly addressed with quantitative methods from ECT. However, most of the human-machine interactions in the lower levels and the human and societal controls in the higher levels are at the moment not suitable for those methods. We assume these ECT parameters may have an important role in designing and examining systems safety and hence we suggest, should be integrated into STAMP model, in purpose to be able to enhance systems safety. © the Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2019.

In recent years multidisc wet friction clutches are of great importance to manufacturers of automatic transmissions (ATs) for the automotive industry, particularly since the introduction of double-clutched ATs. their main advantage compared to their dry-friction counterparts is that they ensure smooth engagement, high reliability and long service life. their progressive engagement due to the developed Couette flow between the discs enables them to be used both as clutches and as brakes in order to control power flow in simultaneously engaged geared shafts in the AT. Due to the coupled nature between the mechanical and the fluid dynamics regimes governing their operation, these systems are highly complex to be treated analytically and instead numerical approaches have proven to provide better results. However, the numerical treatment of such problems provides only case-specific results, which cannot be generalised and are not able to provide a general insight in the complex dynamics of the device. Furthermore the computational cost and the associated modelling and simulation effort during the design phase is high, making the incorporation of such methods in iterative design processes and algorithms counterproductive. In this paper the modelling of the dynamic behaviour of a wet multidisc clutch during the engagement phase is performed, via the combination of analytical and numerical methods and conclusions are drawn about the effect of the main geometric, kinematic and dynamic design parameters on the clutch's response. the dynamic modelling is performed by applying the principle of linear and angular momentum on each disc. the effect of the fluid film is taken into account through the solution of the governing Navier-Stokes equations via CFD analysis or by the use of semi-analytical solutions with high accuracy, where applicable. therefore both the developed pressure field and the torque of the fluid film are calculated efficiently and used in the simulation of the
