A lot of experimental studies have been done to understand the real behavior of Collapsible soil. But there is some limitation to understand their behavior with experimental methods. DEM is a numerical method that can be used to address the behavior of collapsive soils. In this paper, a 2D DEM code was developed to simulate the collapse behavior of granular soil during isotropic compression by focusing on changes in the physical properties of soluble mixtures during dissolution. the effect of percentage of dissoluble particles are simulated on the load-deformation behavior of Collapsible soil. the results show that the location of soluble particle is very important parameter on the deformation. If the dissolution particle not located in the main chain forces, no settlement takes place. Also, the well graded particles reaches to higher density during confining pressure and the effect of local dissolution has lower impact on their load-deformation behavior. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Prediction of soil-nailed wall deformation has been of great interest to many researchers. Excavation overall stability and performance are highly affected by such deformation especially during construction as well as the exposure to external loading. Utilizing numerical models is one the common approaches to investigate the behavior of the soil-nailed walls particularly at convex corners. the focus of this study is to assess the deformation in existence of different soil nail arrangements, namely parallel and perpendicular. To this end, three-dimensional finite element models constructed with the above-mentioned arrangements are generated. the results show that the parallel arrangement enhances the control of horizontal displacements at the convex corners due to its better anchorage of the soil-nailed wall to the back soil body, while the perpendicular arrangement improves the behavior of the vertical displacements caused by its fully reinforced zone generated with overlapping nails. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.

Laboratory experiments on soils have shown that the deviatoric stress-deviatoric strain relationship in soils is highly non-linear, especially in the small strain range. that led to several formulations quantifying that nonlinearity. However, the constitutive models which aim to replicate the small strain nonlinearity are often complex and rarely used in geotechnical engineering practice. the goal of this study is to offer a simple way for updating the existing constitutive models to take into account small strain stiffness changes. the study use an existing small-strain relationship to derive a yield surface. When the yield surface is introduced to an existing soil model, it enhances the model with the nonlinear deviatoric stress-deviatoric strain relationship in the small strain range. Subsequently, the paper gives an example of such a model enhancement by combining the new yield surface with the Modified Cam Clay constitutive model. the simulations with the upgraded constitutive model of the undrained triaxial tests on London Clay replicate the experiments in clearly better than the base model. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Metallic cortical wire meshes are extensively used to protect slopes and infrastructures in mountain regions. these structures are constituted by periodic patterns of steel wires and have a ductile non-linear behaviour. the installed mesh panels generally experience non-trivial boundary conditions which combined with their high deformability and the chance of local ruptures make these structures difficult to be modelled as a continuum. the Discrete Element Method (DEM) is particularly well suited for modelling the soil-mesh interaction problem, taking advantage of its potentials in handling large deformation, contact-detachment and interlocking between particles and the mesh. the mesh is modelled with two approaches and a puncture test on a single mesh panel is used for calibration. After that a simplified soil-mesh problem with a single mesh panel is considered and compared with the results of a punch-mesh problem. the force-displacement behaviour experienced by anchors and edges of the panels are also discussed. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

According to Critical State theory (CST) for granular media, two conditions on the stress ratio and void ratio are considered to be necessary and sufficient for reaching and maintaining the critical state (CS). A two-dimensional discrete element method experiment questions whether these two conditions, that do not consider soil fabric, are sufficient for CS. For this purpose, a virtual sample is first brought to CS and then rotation of the stress principal axes is imposed while keeping stress principal values fixed, hence maintaining the satisfaction of the aforementioned two CST conditions. the rotation induces a void ratio reduction and thus, abandonment of CS, proving incompleteness of classical CST. the recently proposed Anisotropic Critical State theory (ACST) remedies this incompleteness by enhancing the two foregoing conditions by a third, related to the critical state value of a fabric anisotropy variable. the ACST can also explain various other soil response characteristics that cannot be addressed by classical CST with no fabric anisotropy consideration, as depicted by simulations performed with a constitutive model developed within ACST. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

the present paper is related to the development of a cutting system based on water jet with directly injected abrasives (DIA-jet). DIA-jet intends to cut rock bolts during mining works. In order to optimize the design of the jet nozzle and the abrasive tank, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were used to obtain the behavior of the liquid-solid two-phase flow inside the nozzle and abrasive tank where the intense liquid-solid interactions took place. Based on numerical analyses, better understanding of the two-phase flow was achieved and the optimal parameters, including length of the jet nozzle, positions and numbers of the water orifices, as well as their relation to the slurry outlet on the abrasive tank, were obtained. Finally, performance of the water jet cutting system designed based on the optimized parameters from the numerical simulation was experimentally verified.

this paper presents the application to a boundary value problem, namely a benchmark embankment, of a novel constitutive model for soft structured clays that includes anisotropic behavior both of elastic and plastic nature. the model was developed based on an existing model called S-CLAY1S, which is a Cam clay type model that accounts for plastic anisotropy and destructuration. the new model incorporates stress-dependent cross-anisotropic elastic behavior within the yield surface using just 3 independent elastic parameters. Only an additional parameter that relates the vertical and horizontal elastic stiffnesses was introduced for the sake of simplicity. the model does not consider evolution of elastic anisotropy, but laboratory results show that large strains are necessary to cause noticeable changes in elastic anisotropic behavior. Model predictions show a good agreement with laboratory tests available in the literature. Finally, the application of the constitutive model to a benchmark embankment on a soft soil, is presented. A parametric analysis shows the influence of the anisotropic behavior within the elastic range. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

this paper presents a framework for efficiently producing engineering research in a global collaborative effort in a rigorous scientific manner. the proposed framework reduces subjective analysis, automates several mundane research tasks and provides a suitable formal structure for efficient information sharing and collaboration. the implementation of the framework involves multiple research groups setting up different web-servers that can perform the steps of the scientific method and automatically determine the quality and value of new research by directly communicating between servers via public and private Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) using a set of object-oriented protocols. the automation of many mundane research tasks (e.g. data manipulation), would allow researchers to focus more on the novel aspects of their research efforts. the increased clarity around the quality and value of research would allow the research efforts of individuals and available research funding to be better disbursed. the paper discusses the major aspects of the scientific method, object-orientated programming, the application of the proposed research framework for experimental/analytical/numerical engineering research, some of the potential benefits and drawbacks, as well as the current state of implementation. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Intense pore water flow through a stable packed soil bed can lead to a liquefaction and hence to failure of structures like submarine slopes. While in geomechanics the soil is treated as a stable soil skeleton subjected to effective stresses, the liquefied soil has to be dealed with in a different manner. With the transition of the soil bed to a liquid state, it has to be treated as a viscous liquid with different properties compared to its stable condition. To gain a deeper understanding of the micromechanic actions taking place at the transition from a solid to a liquid state and vice versa, a multiscale approach, namely a combination of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM), is used. In the coupled CFD-DEM, the soil particles are tracked in a Lagrangian way at a microscale level. the fluid phase, e.g. the pore water, is modelled as a continuum in CFD, solving the pore water flow with the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. In a first step, the saturated soil of the seabed will be disturbed by a pressurized flow leading to liquefaction. the second step consists of the sedimentation of the soil grains. these investigations will help to draw conclusions about the void ratio and the stress state in the soil during liquid-solid transition. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

the development of Earl's Court Village, London, begun with the demolition of Earl's Court 1 (EC1) and Earl's Court 2 (EC2) exhibition centres, directly above London Underground Limited (LUL) running tunnels. Excavations as close as 150 mm above a brick arch running tunnel were required in order to remove deep transfer beams buried below the basement slab. numerical modelling of the shallow cut-and-cover brick arch tunnel was undertaken to understand the stress change within and displacement of the tunnel lining. Acceptability criteria were agreed with the asset owner, LUL, and compared with the finite element model results. the excavation profile was adapted to provide sufficient confining stresses during each construction stage. Automated in-tunnel monitoring and a condition survey, including hammer tap testing, was used to validate the modelling parameters adopted. this case study sets out a holistic risk assessment approach incorporating numerical modelling and compares monitoring data to calculated movements in order to appraise brick arch tunnel modelling parameters and provide a precedent for future assessments of brick arch tunnels.
