Finite Element Method has been applied by various researchers to analyse many complex structures with greater accuracy. As an alternative to overcome many constraints of FEM a FE-BE coupling technique is applied taking advantages of both Finite Element and Boundary Element method to determine the natural frequency of rectangular piled-raft foundation. the rectangular raft is idealised as thick plate and the soil as isotropic, homogeneous, semi infinite elastic half-space. the plate and half-space is modelled separately with a unilateral and frictional contact at their interface. the stiffness of pile is calculated based on elastic theory using simplified approach. A computer code is developed in which discretisation is automatic and very nominal useful data is required. Effect of various pile parameters and the pile configuration on the natural frequency is studied to demonstrate the effect of pile on natural frequency of the pile raft system. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

the paper investigates the stability of slopes with spatially variable and cross-correlated shear strength parameters in 3D. the influence of various cross-correlation coefficients between these parameters on the probability of 3D slope failure has been considered for different levels of anisotropy of the heterogeneity in the shear strength. Specifically, 3D random fields of cohesion and friction angle were generated using the Local Average Subdivision method, and these were correlated with eachother by various degrees. the fields were then linked to finite element analyses within a Monte Carlo framework. the results indicate that a positive cross-correlation between the parameters reduces the slope reliability, whereas a negative cross-correlation between the parameters increases the reliability. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

According to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), subsequent to each excavation step shotcrete is directly applied onto the surrounding rock mass, forming a supporting structure which is usually loaded already several hours after application due to further advance of the tunnel. Only a few advanced material models for shotcrete for representing the highly nonlinear, time-dependent material behavior have been proposed in the literature so far. Recently, in (Neuner, Gamnitzer, & Hofstetter 2017) a new constitutive model for shotcrete, denoted as the SCDP model, based on a combination of the theory of plasticity, the theory of continuum damage mechanics, and a modified version of the solidification theory (Bažant & Prasannan 1989) was presented. the model represents time-dependent material behavior, as well as hardening and softening material behavior of shotcrete. In the present contribution, an extension of the SCDP model, and a comparison with two selected, frequently used shotcrete models, i.e., the models proposed by Meschke (1996), and by Schädlich and Schweiger (2014), are presented. the comparison is based on a benchmark example of a deep tunnel driven by the NATM, which is derived from a stretch of the Brenner Basetunnel. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Failure of unsaturated soils due to rainfall infiltration is a threat in many parts of the world with temperate or hot climate. Understanding of unsaturated slope stability during rainfall infiltration is an important but complex problem. the shear strength of unsaturated soil depends on soil suction and positive pore water pressure which are governed by the water flow. In addition, the soil porosity can vary spatially quite significantly which generates atypical preferential paths for the water flow. this can lead to unusual suction reduction and/or build-up of positive pore pressure over the domain. this study nummerically investigates the stability of an unsaturated slope with spatially varying porosity. the random finite element method and the shear strength reduction technique are employed to probabilistically estimate the change in factor of safety during and after a rainfall event. through Monte Carlo simulation, the study shows that the heterogeneity of porosity can alter the failure mechanism and the probability of failure of the unsaturated slope. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Nowadays, Offshore Wind Turbines (OWTs) are placed in harsh environments seeking for a better outcome in energy production. However, the accurate determination of the first natural frequency of an OWT is crucial for the safe design of the OWTs where the resonance phenomenon must be avoided at all costs. Since both the OWT and its supporting monopile are all tubular, the whole system exhibits an axisymmetric geometry under non-axisymmetric loading. this type of problems can be analyzed by a semi-analytical approach commonly called Fourier Series Aided Finite Element Method (FSAFEM). In the present paper, a computer code has been written to estimate natural vibrations of an OWT supported by a monopile embedded in three soil profiles. the profiles considered are those found in the API and DNV offshore guidelines, which are constant, linear and parabolic variation of stiffness with depth. Comparisons with measured natural frequencies of OWTs are performed. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.

In diverse applications including pile driving, excavations, foundations, prediction of landslides and slope failure, large deformation and material movement is observed in the soil medium. In order to simulate these processes, pure Lagrangian based numerical methods, popularly known as the Finite Element Method pose certain challenges. this can be overcome by coupling the Lagrangian method with the Eulerian approach. Material Point Method (MPM) is one such implementation capable of simulating large deformations in soil. Certain numerical difficulties in MPM such as grid-crossing error, incapability for extension etc., are alleviated in the Convected Particle Domain Interpolation (CPDI) approach, an improvement bought about to MPM. CPDI is further extended to a two-phase model for simulating saturated soil. Soil and water phases are represented by a single particle, based on their respective porosities. the third phase-air/void is neglected in the present work. A multi-velocity formulation, i.e. solid-water velocity formulation (v-w formulation) is adopted to precisely capture the saturated soil behavior. this includes a full set of equation for soil and water;which can capture both stress and pressure waves. Effective stress concept is followed by accounting pore pressure effects in the deformation of soil. A few examples are presented to validate the two-phase CPDI implementation. the method is then evaluated by means of a dynamic application, a pile installation simulation in saturated sand. A 2D axisymmetric model is considered together, with a penalty contact method for evaluating the interaction between soil and pile. the pile is hammered into the sand by means of pulse loading applied on head of the pile. A Hypoplastic constitutive model is chosen for the sand which allows the study of soil parameters such as stress, void ratio, friction angle, pore pressure etc., during the installation process. the effect of saturated soil on pile installation is studied

this study investigates the effect of mainshock-aftershock sequences on numerical fragility and vulnerability relationships of european reinforced concrete (RC) moment-resisting frames (MRFs). A four-story, four-bay nonductile RC MRF is selected for illustrative purposes. this index building is representative of a typical vulnerability class in the Mediterranean region. the influence of the masonry infills on seismic performance is also investigated. An advanced numerical nonlinear model is developed for the case-study frame and then assessed through nonlinear dynamic analysis using both real and artificial mainshock-aftershock sequences, via a ‘sequential cloud’ approach. the obtained seismic demand estimates allow to generate fragility functions for the undamaged frame when subjected to mainshocks only. Moreover, state-dependent fragility functions are derived for the mainshock-damaged frame when subsequently subjected to aftershocks. Damage-to-loss models, specifically calibrated on Italian post-earthquake data, are used to derive vulnerability functions for this case-study structure. Preliminary results from the study show that the frame experiences severe damages states and high losses for a range of ground-motion shaking intensities, with a clear damage increase due to aftershocks. An attempt to generate vector-valued mainshock-aftershock vulnerability relationships is finally presented. the proposed vulnerability surfaces can be more easily implemented into a time-dependent risk assessment framework. © 2019 the authors.

Cyclic and dynamic behavior of saturated sands is significantly influenced by their porosity and permeability. During loading, unloading and reloading compaction, loosening and re-compaction of sands take place, which lead to change in pore volume and permeability. In this study, the behavior of water saturated sands subjected to cyclic and dynamic loading is analyzed numerically. For the finite element analyses, a three-dimensional fully coupled two-phase finite element is developed and implemented on the basis of a two-phase model to consider the pore water pressure development in saturated sands. In addition, a hypoplastic constitutive model is used to describe the material behavior of sandy soils. the porosity-permeability variation is taken into account by Kozeny-Carman relationship. Comparing with experimental test results documented in the literature, the influence of porosity-permeability variation on the strain and pore pressure accumulation is investigated. the necessity of the consideration of porosity-permeability variation for realistic modeling of the cyclic and dynamic behavior of saturated sandy soils is assessed. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Protective coatings are increasingly utilized to provide low friction, high wear resistance and long fatigue life to many tribological applications including cutting tools, magnetic data storage or engine components. the coating design relies heavily on the knowledge of contact stresses generated in rough-surface contacts, thus requiring improved contact models and efficient numerical methods. Spectral analysis, based on the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and on the convolution theorem, has played an important role in assessing the elastic response of a homogenous half-space, as the corresponding Green's functions are readily available in the time/space domain. In the case of a bilayered medium, the elastic response is only known in the frequency domain as the frequency response functions, and derivation of the Green's functions can be challenging. this paper explores the possibility of using spectral methods in the analysis of contact behaviour of layered elastic solids. the starting point is the Discrete Convolution Fast Fourier Transform (DCFFT) technique, which eliminates the periodicity error associated with application of FFT to non-periodic problems. the influence coefficients required by DCFFT are derived from the frequency response functions. the numerical predictions agree well with results from the literature of layered elastic solids under normal contact load.

Predicting accurately the response of sands to cyclic loads is as relevant as still challenging when many loading cycles are involved, for instance, in relation to offshore or railway geo-engineering applications. Despite the remarkable achievements in the field of soil constitutive modelling, most existing models do not yet capture satisfactorily strain accumulation under high-cyclic drained loading, nor the the build-up of pore pressures under high-cyclic undrained conditions. Recently, bounding surface plasticity enhanced with the concept of memory surface has proven promising to improve sand ratcheting simulations under drained loading conditions (Corti et al. 2016). this paper presents a new model built by combining the memory surface concept by (Corti et al. 2016) with the well-known SANISAND04 bounding surface formulation proposed by Dafalias and Manzari (2004). the outcome is a new sand model that can reproduce phenomenologically the fabric evolution mechanisms governing strain accumulation under long-lasting loading histories (here up to 104 loading cycles). In undrained test simulations, the model proves capable of correctly capturing the rate of pore pressure accumulation, preventing precocious occurrence of cyclic liquefaction. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
