We study iterative blind symbol detection for block-fading linear inter-symbol interference channels. Based on the factor graph framework, we design a joint channel estimation and detection scheme that combines the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm and the ubiquitous belief propagation (BP) algorithm. Interweaving the iterations of both schemes signifi-cantly reduces the EM algorithm's computational burden while retaining its excellent performance. To this end, we apply simple yet effective model-based learning methods to find a suitable parameter update schedule by introducing momentum in both the EM parameter updates as well as in the BP message passing. numerical simulations verify that the proposed method can learn efficient schedules that generalize well and even outperform coherent BP detection in high signal-to-noise scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Laser interstitial thermotherapy has shown potential in the treatment of inoperable lung cancers, which make up 70-80 % of all cases, thanks to the possibility of real-time ultrasound guidance, a fine introducer needle, and faster recovery after the procedure. To plan a laser ablation session through numerical modeling, the sensitivity analysis of the input parameters is necessary since simplifying the influential parameters could lead to a different treatment *** purpose of this study is to determine the sensitivity of laser-induced ablated volume, an indicator of therapy efficacy, with regard to the temperature dependence of thermal properties in the clinical power ranges (i.e., between 2 W and 5 W at the wavelength of 1064 nm) for lung tissue. According to the results, the difference between ablated volumes derived from constant and temperature-dependent thermal properties grows with increasing power, reaching 17.5% and 60.3% under ex vivo and in vivo conditions at 5 W, respectively. As the blood perfusion rate strongly affects the thermal effects in tissue, the temperature dependency of this parameter cannot be ignored. the assumption of constant thermal properties is valid for ex vivo planning by acceptable error when the laser power is set at a low level, e.g., ~ 2% at 2 W and ~ 6% at 3 *** Relevance - the methods and results of this study set the basis for defining the accurate pre-planning of laser-induced thermotherapy of lung cancer. © 2024 IEEE.

In the course of this research, a so-called mass-spring method was implemented in an in-house developed two-dimensional discrete element software, which enables the simulation of deformable, tear-able bodies, such as plant residues (stems or roots), or other agricultural fibrous materials. the operation of the numerical methods was illustrated with simulations where a rigid plate was moved horizontally against a plant residue modeled by the mass-spring method, pulled in an assembly of particles modeled by the discrete element method, and pulled in a combination of these. When evaluating the results, it was found that the improved numerical methods are able to work stable both separately and in interaction with each other, thus in the future it is possible to take plant residues as stems and roots into account during the simulations of the tillage process with their coupled application. © ECMS Enrico Vicario, Romeo Bandinelli, Virginia Fani, Michele Mastroianni (Editors) 2023.

the construction of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the compressible Euler equations includes the approximation of non-linear flux terms in the volume integrals. the terms can lead to aliasing and stability issues. the entropy and kinetic energy are elevated in smooth, but under-resolved parts of the solution which are affected by aliasing. In this work the split form DG framework is used to construct entropy conservative (EC) or kinetic energy preserving (KEP) nodal discontinuous Galerkin spectral element methods (DGSEM) to solve the Euler equations on moving hexahedral meshes. the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) approach is used to include the effect of mesh motion in the split form DG methods. Since the EC or KEP property is not sufficient to tame discontinuities in the numerical solution, the split form ALE DGSEM are modified by adding numerical dissipation matrices to the EC or KEP surface numerical fluxes. this leads to entropy stable (ES) or kinetic energy dissipative (KED) methods. the three dimensional Taylor-Green vortex (TGV) is investigated to analyze the properties of the constructed split form ALE DGSEM. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

the seismic performance of non-structural elements, such as electrical cabinets, has been proven to be of crucial importance when assessing the global performance of modern code-compliant facilities. the seismic performance of several typologies of electrical cabinets was recently assessed in a shake table testing campaign conducted in the 6DLAB laboratory of the Eucentre Foundation, located in Pavia, Italy. Using the experimental data obtained from the testing campaign, numerical models were calibrated to reproduce the hysteretic response of the electrical cabinets. three different criteria were considered for the calibration of the numerical models: i) absorbed energy time-history, ii) relative displacement time-history, and iii) force-relative displacement hysteretic response. the developed numerical models can approximate the seismic response of the electrical cabinets when subjected to the seismic testing protocols of increasing intensity used during the testing campaign. Furthermore, the developed numerical models are useful to generalize the experimental results obtained in the testing campaign and can be used to conduct additional numerical studies on the seismic performance of other configurations of electrical cabinet systems. © 2023 COMPDYN Proceedings. the recent emergence of turbulence modeling strategies under the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) framework has opened the door towards highly efficient numerical solutions for the governing fluids equations with potential application to industry. Advantages of the LBM over traditional Navier-Stokes (NS) based methods include its straightforward parallelization and its ability to recover flow dynamics without explicit treatment for pressure. In the present work, Large Eddy Simulation within a Lattice Boltzmann framework is used to study a lid-driven cavity. In particular, a Smagorinsky subgrid scale model is chosen for the unresolved scales within a single-relaxation-time LBM. Simulations are performed in three dimensions at a Reynolds number of 105. One-dimensional energy spectra are computed and the range of energy scales in the numerical solutions are inspected to ensure that turbulence has been captured. Isosurfaces of various vortex identification criteria are examined and compared to the vorticity magnitude and pressure minima.

the increasing need for mobility is fuelling interest in extending the service life of existing bridges. In case of the Jauntal Bridge, one of the highest railway bridges in Europe, a new structure with two tracks is placed on the existing massive concrete columns with a hight of almost 100 m compared to the old structure with one track. Non-linear innovative numerical analyses and advanced safety considerations were used to examine whether the significantly higher bearing-column forces can be sustained by the existing columns and column heads. this paper shows how the advanced modelling methods can be applied to ensure that the existing structures, can be safely maintained over their planned lifetime in service for sustainability reasons. © 2024 the Editor(s).

As the world fights climate change challenges and the soaring demand for energy-efficient solutions, the need for sustainable heating and cooling systems in residential buildings has become paramount. Traditional systems rely on fossil fuels and contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) have emerged as a promising technology, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional space conditioning systems. Central to the success of GSHPs is the efficient and reliable operation of their ground heat exchangers, with lower installation costs, as a prospective solution for future residential applications. this paper presents a numerical axisymmetric (r-z) finite volume method solution of the thermal performance of coaxial ground heat exchangers (CGHE) that incorporate phase change material (PCM) in the ground for GSHP applications. An analysis of the CGHE with PCM grout is presented, highlighting the advantages of heat exchange performance over normal grouts. the temperature comparison on three different points in the grout with different grouting materials was carried out to analyse the behaviour of different grouting materials during the heat exchange process. the investigation from a temperature point of view showed that the inclusion of PCM in the grouting material improves the thermal performance of the CGHE. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Ground anchor kits using prestressing strands (strand ground anchor kit) have been widely used in geotechnical applications with much more aggressive environment – soil or rock, highly humid or immersed in underground water and exposed to various chemical agents – than regular post-tensioning systems, which are usually protected by concrete coverage. However, there has been a lack of regulatory requirements on strand ground anchor kits, thus the measure ensuring the durability of kits have lagged so far on international level behind those for post-tensioning kits. Very recently the first european Assessment Document (EAD) for strand ground anchors – EAD 160071-00-0102 has been accomplished. this EAD comprises comprehensive requirements and assessment testing methods to ensure the mechanical, durability and corrosion protection performances of the ground anchor kits using prestressing strands. Furthermore, this document establishes the legal base for certification, european Technical Assessment (ETA) and CE marking, and set a new benchmark for technologies applied in strand ground anchors. the CE marked strand ground anchor kits are subjected to factory production control and an independent surveillance and are to be installed by geotechnical specialist companies with trained personnel, ensuring a professional and system conforming installation. © Fédération Internationale du Béton – International Federation for Structural Concrete.

the flow characteristics, across a detonation flame arrestor in gas transport pipelines was studied in detail numerically. the pressure drop in the flame arrestor is predominantly associated with the crimp design of the flame arrestor element. the flow in the flame arrestor element is three dimensional, making it very challenging and computationally expensive for numerical modeling. To overcome the complexity of directly modeling the three- dimensional flow, a porous media model is developed using the Forchheimer equation. the coefficients of the Forchheimer equation were obtained from experiments and numerical simulation. the experimental method used test data on a small-scale crimped flame arrestor element. In the numerical method, a single triangular crimp-channel flow numerical simulation result was used to calculate the Forchheimer coefficients. numerical solutions of flow across a small-scale flame element using the experimentally and numerically developed Forchheimer equations were verified experimentally. the result in both cases were validated to within five percent of experimental data. the flow characteristic result calculated using the numerically developed Forchheimer equation has similar accuracy as the experimentally developed coefficients. the simplification and advantages gained by developing the Forchheimer coefficients using numerical methods in flame arrestor applications is presented.
