the objective of this work is to analyze rock slope stability under seismic conditions with a Lebanese case study. High and steep slopes characterize the topography of Lebanon. Moreover, Lebanon could be subjected to serious earthquakes because the country contains one major fault and a number of secondary faults, with more having been discovered more recently. Most common methods used in engineering practice to assess the seismic stability of a slope are based on a pseudo static approach or traditional approaches based on the limit equilibrium or on the hypothesis of failure calculation. Such methods are widely used because of their simplicity and there is no need for sophisticated software for their application. However, they neglect important elements such as the initial state and the spatial and temporal variability of the loading. In this paper, we present a global numerical study of rock slope stability by using UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code) software. We consider the seismic stability of a slope located in Jezzine (South of Lebanon) using real earthquake records (Kocaeli, 1999). three states have been simulated for predicting the behavior of the rock slope. First, an initial static loading is applied in the numerical model in order to simulate the prevailing rock mass conditions at the site. Second, joint conditions are modeled along the horizontal and vertical discontinuities of the rock mass. third, a dynamic loading, based on peak ground acceleration expected in the area, is applied to simulate dynamic earthquake conditions. the work shows the importance of the geo-mechanical parameters of the rock and fractures in the slopes stability analysis of fractured rocks under seismic loading. We also give some recommendations about the efficient scheme of reinforcement that lead to a better enhancement of the stability in this special case. © the authors and ICE Publishing: All rights reserved, 2015.

In the last two decades, the increasing complexity of engineering systems boosted the development of very efficient simulation methods based on partitioning. In view of coupling dynamic parts of hybrid systems, the finite element tearing and interconnecting approach emerged as the most promising technique. Nonetheless, there is still a lack of a comprehensive study of algorithmic performances from the experimental perspective. In this view, the present paper sheds light on the application of two well-known parallel partitioning methods for the purpose of the simulation of hybrid models. thus, an existent reinforced concrete bridge is chosen as a benchmark case study. In order to perform hybrid simulations, a novel coupling software was devised. It allowed for combining two physical piers to the numerical model of the remaining part of the bridge. As a result, successful tests were conducted at the ELSA laboratory of the Joint Research Centre of Ispra (Italy).

Although a number of projects involving thermally activated retaining walls have been completed and in some cases monitored, only one case with observations of the effect of heating and cooling has been published, i.e. Section LT24 of the Lainzer Tunnel in Austria. this case showed that climatic temperature effects may dominate the thermo-mechanical response of the wall system. However, the temperature changes imposed within the Lainzer tunnel wall were rather small, i.e. about +/-6°C from the background temperature of the soil, suggesting that the energy demands were not large and were met largely by heat exchange with the tunnel rather than the surrounding soil mass. this paper presents an overview of existing observations relating to thermally activated retaining walls and the results of a numerical study that examines the impact of the thermal properties of the ground and the wall structure, and the thermal boundary condi- Tions at the interface between the tunnel and the wall in the response of thermally activated walls. the results confirm that even with larger energy inputs, the main mechanism for heat exchange appears to be between the air void and the wall, rather than the ground, and alterations to the wall mechanical response are small. © the authors and ICE Publishing: All rights reserved, 2015.

Foundations may practically be constructed at close spacing that results in interaction between them. this interference causes significant variations in their performance. Determination of the relevant failure mechanism and its corresponding bearing capacity of the closely spaced footings is one of the most challenging concerns. An appropriate failure mechanism leads to a better understanding of the real behavior of the interfering. this research deals with the behavior of two adjacent strip footings on sand employing finite difference and kinematic element methods (FDM and KEM). thereafter, the ultimate bearing capacity from different mechanisms are compared with those analytically and experimentally reported in the literature. In the numerical analyses conducted in research, two different methods are taken into account namely FDM based on FLAC3D code and KEM that has been developed for 2-dimensional problems. the FDM solution obeys a non-associated flow rule taking Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion into account. In KEM code (associate plasticity), the proposed failure mechanism is designated as a number of rigid elements with plane boundaries with translational movement (no rotation). However, the exact shape and size of failure mechanism is a model response. Since the kinematical element solutions neglects the dilation of the soil, this research has investigated the effect of dilation angle on the ultimate bearing capacity of the interfering strip footings. the good agreement between the obtained bearing capacities and existing experiments at different spacings indicates the reliability of both FDM and KEM concept to determine the effect of interference on bearing capacity of footings. © the authors and ICE Publishing: All rights reserved, 2015.

Offshore wind power in the UK, and around Europe, has the potential to deliver significant quantities of renewable energy. the foundation is a critical element in the design. the most common foundation design is a single large diameter pile, termed a monopile. Pile diameters of between 5m and 6m are routinely used, with diameters up to 10m or more, being considered for future designs. Questions have been raised as to whether current design methods for lateral loading are relevant to these very large diameter piles. To explore this problem a joint industry project, PISA, co-ordinated by DONG Energy and the Carbon Trust, has been established. the aim of the project is to develop a new design framework for laterally loaded piles based on new theoretical developments, numerical modelling and bench- marked against a suite of large scale field pile tests. the project began in August 2013 and is scheduled to complete during 2015. this paper briefly outlines the project, focusing on the design of the field testing. the testing involves three sizes of pile, from 0.27m in diameter through to 2.0m in diameter. Two sites will be used;a stiff clay site and a dense sand site. Tests will include monotonic loading and cyclic loading. A suite of site investigation will be carried out to aid interpretation of the field tests, and will involve in-situ testing, standard laboratory testing and more advanced laboratory testing. © the authors and ICE Publishing: All rights reserved, 2015.

Nowadays, articulated shield becomes popular to construct tunnels with curved alignments. To steer the articulated shield, it is necessary to determine the operation on jack, copy cutter and articulation mechanism. But since these three functions have a high co-linearity to shield behavior, it is difficult to obtain unique operational parameters at once. therefore, the authors developed a numerical method to determine the copy cutter length and the articulation angle uniquely, based on geometric conditions under some constraint conditions. this paper shows an example of the application of the proposed method to a 3 dimensional compound alignment and discusses the validity of the proposed model. As conclusions, the followings were found: 1) the articulation angle depends on shield dimension, tunnel alignment and operation rules of shield rotation;2) the copy cutter length distributes across the major normal direction of the tunnel about a half of the skin plate area;and 3) the analysis results demonstrate that the proposed method can provide articulation angle and copy cutter length and range reasonably from the view point of geometric conditions.

the influence of the seismic performance of existing bridges on the functionality of communication infrastructures is widely recognized as a crucial issue. therefore, Hybrid Simulation with Dynamic Substructuring (HS-DS) was selected for assessing the seismic response of a two-pier reinforced concrete (RC) bridge at the Eucentre TREES Laboratory of Pavia (Italy). In order to simulate a consistent degradation between the physical and the numerical pier, the use of the Unscented Kalman Filter as parameter identification tool was explored. A novel parallel partitioned time integrator tailored to first order systems allowed for the straightforward accommodation of the filter. © International conference on Advances in Experimental Structural engineering. the method for a numerical solution of the vibro-acoustic problem in a mobile screw compressor is proposed and in-house 3D finite element (FE) solver is developed. In order to reduce the complexity of the problem, attention is paid to the numerical solution of the acoustic pressure field in the compressor cavity interacting with the linear elastic compressor housing. Propagation of acoustic pressure in the cavity is mathematically described by the Helmholtz equation in the amplitude form and is induced by periodically varying surface velocity of the engine and compressor assembly. In accordance with prescribed boundary conditions, numerical solution of the Helmholtz equation for the distribution of acoustic pressure amplitudes within the cavity is performed using the finite element method on tetrahedral meshes. For the FE discretisation of the elastic compressor housing, a new 6-noded thin flat shell triangular finite element with 21 DOF based on the Kirchhoff plate theory was developed and implemented. the resulting strong coupled system of linear algebraic equations describing the vibro-acoustic problem, i.e., the problem of interaction between the air inside the cavity and the screw compressor housing, is solved numerically by well-known algorithms implemented in MATLAB. By considering two different benchmark test cases, the developed 3D FE solver is successfully verified against the numerical results provided by the professional computational FE system Radioss. Finally, the vibro-acoustic problem is solved in a simplified model of a real mobile screw compressor by prescribing experimentally measured acoustic velocity on the surface of the engine and compressor assembly. the numerical solution is carried out only with the professional computational FE system Radioss as our developed solver is still unable to process large-sized problems without encountering memory limits. thus, for the assessment of results computed by Radioss, we use results acquired during expe

An efficient assessment of human resource competences, followed by the goal oriented analysis of the results, support the identification of the competence gaps in organizations and the allocation of resources towards identified gaps. this paper presents the basic idea as well as the scientific and implementation results of the ComProFITS project as an innovative web-based platform for the evaluation of existing employees and the recruitment of new employees in organizations. the platform integrates research on the statistical assessment of competences, an innovative competence pyramid and many alternative methods of employee evaluation and recruitment. the initial version of the platform is being applied and used in the IT sector in a large organization in Spain with the goal of extending it to the Spanish and european wide enterprises in different sectors.
