A two-dimensional finite element numerical model was proposed to analyze earthquake responses of gradient-changing slope based on a shaking table test. In order to study dynamic characteristics of the gradient-changing slope, seismic waves with different peak accelerations, sorts and frequencies were input at bottom boundary of the numerical model. Simulation results show that dynamic performance of the numerical model is similar to practical homogeneous soil slope. then, numerical model was verified by comparing simulation results with test data. the results are helpful to further study on mechanism of slope stability under earthquake and the guidance for practical engineering.

Web-based tool for visualization of electric field distribution in deep-seated body structures and planning of electroporation-based treatments

Background: Treatments based on electroporation are a new and promising approach to treating tumors, especially non-resectable ones. the success of the treatment is, however, heavily dependent on coverage of the entire tumor volume with a sufficiently high electric field. Ensuring complete coverage in the case of deep-seated tumors is not trivial and can in best way be ensured by patient-specific treatment planning. the basis of the treatment planning process consists of two complex tasks: medical image segmentation, and numerical modeling and optimization. methods: In addition to previously developed segmentation algorithms for several tissues (human liver, hepatic vessels, bone tissue and canine brain) and the algorithms for numerical modeling and optimization of treatment parameters, we developed a web-based tool to facilitate the translation of the algorithms and their application in the clinic. the developed web-based tool automatically builds a 3D model of the target tissue from the medical images uploaded by the user and then uses this 3D model to optimize treatment parameters. the tool enables the user to validate the results of the automatic segmentation and make corrections if necessary before delivering the final treatment plan. Results: Evaluation of the tool was performed by five independent experts from four different institutions. During the evaluation, we gathered data concerning user experience and measured performance times for different components of the tool. Both user reports and performance times show significant reduction in treatment-planning complexity and time-consumption from 1-2 days to a few hours. Conclusions: the presented web-based tool is intended to facilitate the treatment planning process and reduce the time needed for it. thermo-hydro-mechanical (thM) models contain a large set of constitutive parameters and this requires numerous experiments to determine these parameters. this study contributes to the identification of coupled thM constitutive model parameters via back analysis. A probabilistic approach is proposed to determine the confidence intervals for the identified parameters. the optimization problem is solved via the Particle Swarm Optimization procedure implemented in the VARO2PT software. A multi-replication technique is adopted to assess the reliability of the optimal parameters. the results indicate that optimal parameters are the obeying normal distribution. the next outcome is that higher parameter sensitivity implicates narrower confidence interval. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

In the current practice of underground project design, two-dimensional numerical modelling is usually sufficient. Nevertheless, a three-dimensional approach might be necessary in some cases to optimize and verify the geometry and the construction methods, especially for underground works to be excavated under tight constraints in urban environment. this study presents the case of aTBM dismantling cavern which is to be constructed for the future extension of a metro line in Paris, under sensitive residential buildings. At first, a 2D finite element model was used to assess the settlements caused by the excavation of a relatively long cavern. this first approach resulted in settlement predictions exceeding admissible thresholds. As a consequence, the size and the shape of the cavern as well as the excavation process were adapted. the validation of the design with respect to settlement control could finally be achieved using 3D modeling approach. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

the paper discusses the recent numerical progress in modeling an underground explosion event in saturated sand. It utilizes a fully coupled numerical approach implemented using a dual mesh concept based on Biot's u-U formulations. Using this approach, 3D finite element analyses of a buried detonation are carried out and wave propagations in both the pore fluid and soil skeleton are solved in the fully saturated medium. the numerical predictions obtained from the dual phase calculations with nonlinear material modeling are validated using centrifuge test results, analytical solutions and existing empirical correlations. the consistency among the different comparisons shows the capability of the dual phase coupling method in solving high-frequency extreme loading problems involving saturated soils. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

the stability of unsaturated soil slopes in tropical regions has been receiving special attention by geotechnical engineering. During rainfall events, failure mechanisms can be generated by the advance of a wetting front, resulting in an increase in pore water pressure or reduction in soil matric suction (negative pore water pressure). In several studies, the changes in pore water pressure are obtained through a seepage analysis that satisfies only the continuity equation. However, in real situations, the flow process is influenced by soil deformations and the equilibrium equations should also be satisfied, considering the soil slope stability analysis as a coupled hydromechanical problem. this paper presents a comparison between numerical results obtained from coupled and uncoupled finite element analyses within a soil slope subjected to rain infiltration. the variation of the safety factor, using the shear strength reduction method, is also compared and discussed. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

the COGAN (Competency in geotechnical Analysis) project, funded under the european Union Lifelong Learning Programme, has the overall goal of improving competency in geotechnical numerical analysis. It aims to achieve this by firstly defining the competences that users of geotechnical numerical analysis software must possess as a minimum and then developing a Competency Tracker: a web-based interface to look-up and record achievement in these competences and view links to associated resource material. Finally, E-Learning Modules will be developed to provide accessible, affordable work-based training in two key areas. In order to help ensure that the deliverables of this project meet industry needs, a survey was undertaken and this paper summarises the findings of this survey. the survey comprised of an online questionnaire and was completed by 618 respondents from around the world. A large majority of respondents thought a system to define competences and provide links to appropriate training resources would be useful. the survey also provided a valuable insight into the current use of geotechnical numerical analysis in industry. the most serious issues identified were validation of analysis results and obtaining geotechnical parameters, which were also areas identified in most need of training and definition of competency. the findings of this survey are now being used in the development of the COGAN project deliverables to ensure that they meet the needs of industry as much as possible.

Passive stabilization is a novel technique for mitigating the risk of seismic liquefaction in the non-cohesive foundation soil of existing structures. It entails the low-gradient injection of colloidal silica in the soil pores, a stabilizer material which transforms into a firm gel after a well-controlled time. this gelation enhances the mechanical response of the soil skeleton - pore fluid system. the microscopic mechanism of improvement has not yet been established, a fact prohibiting the formulation of constitutive models. this study explores the possibility of using existing constitutive models for simulating the response of stabilized sands. A bounding surface plasticity model for sands (NTUA-SAND) is used herein for this purpose, after appropriate re-calibration on the basis of published element test results on stabilized sand. then, the efficiency of this modeling approach is explored through comparison with results from dynamic centrifuge tests. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Designing deep excavations in densely built areas implies complex aspects when estimating the effects induced on the existing built environment. numerical methods used nowadays can account for both strength and deformability parameters of soils, helping the engineer in assessing not only difficult geometries and the sequence of construction stages, but also complex soil behavior through advanced constitutive models. thus, both the retaining wall deformations and excavation-induced ground movements can accurately be predicted. the paper focuses on presenting the application of the above stated issues on a practical case study by using the finite element method. In principle, this is related to the assimilation of appropriate calculation technique and constitutive soil models together with their associated geotechnical parameters. the case study is represented by a deep excavation constructed inVienna, for which the results are validated by comparison to the measurements of real soil behavior. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Based on the non-linear finite element analysis, the maximum bearing capacity of a plain circular concrete lining subjected to external and internal pressure is investigated. numerical results regarding elastic stresses and deformations are compared with those calculated using the classical thick-walled cylinder theory. Referring to the discrete cracking concept and assuming that the concrete behaves as a brittle material, the redistribution of stresses after cracks have occurred is further investigated. the normal tensile strength in the lining will reduce to zero as soon as the joint element is cracked. these analyses confirm that the proposed modelling method may be used satisfactorily, to model the cracking process of passive pre-stressed circular concrete linings. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
