the paper presents a water retention model for compacted clayey soils. the model is based on a description of the aggregated structure of the material and its evolution along generalized hydraulic and mechanical stress paths. the water retention properties of each structural level are distinguished and described separately using an expression of the type proposed by van Genuchten (1980). the water retention model is validated against experimental data on Boom Clay compacted at different dry densities. Its qualitative performance are highlighted along a complex hydromechanical path. the proposed formulation succeeds in tracking simultaneously the evolution of the fabric pattern and of the hydraulic state of compacted clays along generalized stress paths. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Pure lagrangian vortex methods are suitable for engineering analysis when it is necessary to compute unsteady aerodynamic loads in complicated FSI-problems. Lagrangian vortex element methods allow to simulate dynamics of 3D vortex structures with small numerical diffusion because in these methods vorticity is 'primitive' variable and integral formulation of governing equations is used. Computational cost of these methods is small in comparison with grid CFD methods. In the present research the vortex element method with vortex fragmentons is used for clamped-clamped elastic cylindrical shell oscillations simulation exited by unsteady hydrodynamic loads. Shell dynamics is simulated using modal analysis method;normal modes are calculated using MSC. Nastran software.

A method of characteristics for solving one-dimensional model of fluid flow in pipe networks with tree-like structure is developed. the method is validated in the case of flow with no wave reflections where the analytical solution is known. the method is applied to the fluid flow in a branching tube in cases of pure elastic and viscoelastic wall. the effects of wall stiffening and tube tapering were investigated. It is concluded that neither stiffening nor tapering can cause the effect of pressure wave steepening toward the periphery.

In this study, numerical analyses have been performed for a sandy embankment lying on liquefiable non-homogeneous soil using finite element code based on extended subloading surface model (Takahashi 2002). Non-homogeneous soil deposit comprises of Toyoura sand and periodically distributed patches of less permeable layer of silty sand. Analyses were also conducted for embankments on uniform sand comprising of only Toyoura sand. It was found that excess pore water pressure (EPWP) ratio values were higher below the embankment and free field region at shallow depths in non-homogeneous foundation during shaking, manifesting large amount of crest settlement and lateral deformation of embankment. In addition, dissipation of pore water took a longer period of time, which might be incorporated by migration of pore water from underlying foundation soil toward the free field, causing an additional larger settlement of embankment and larger heave at the free field ground surface and post-liquefaction delayed failures in non-homogeneous foundation. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Suction caisson are hollow cylinders open towards the bottom that are currently used as anchors for deep water offshore facilities. they recently turned out to be advantageously exploited as foundation for offshore wind turbines in shallow water (Senders 2009). the Prevost model for cohesionless soils (Prevost 1985) is currently used for the modelling of their cyclic behaviour. It's able to reproduce plastic deformation in both loading and unloading, contractancy of the soil and pore pressure build up as well. In this paper, a fully-coupled transient axisymmetric analysis of a suction caisson is carried out. A vertical pseudo-random loading is transformed into equivalent ones. Comparison of the permanent displacement accumulated shows a good agreement between them. the influence of the interface conditions is also addressed. For low tension amplitude applied to the caisson, it can be modelled as "stuck" to the inner soil. However higher amplitude might lead to a total unplugging. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

this paper describes the finite element analysis of an alternative mechanically-stabilized-earth (MSE) wall, subject to dynamic loading using PLAXIS®-2D. the model incorporates Lightweight expanded shale aggregates (LWA) as backfill materials. Dynamic loading includes sinusoidal harmonic motions from 0.2 to 6Hz frequencies. the numerical simulation is used to verify experimental shake-table studies on a small-scale prototype. the model features multiple layers of backfill materials reinforced with synthetic geo-grid sheets and loaded with a shallow foundation. Discussions include the effectiveness of numerical techniques to model various features of the MSE wall. numerical results are compatible with the shake-table experimental data. Further, simulations indicate the effectiveness of using equivalent springs in the small-scale model to replicate absorbent boundaries in a true-scale MSE wall. Moreover, the numerical output shows the sensitivity of MSE wall response to the frequency of the base excitation. However, the effect of damping is not readily exhibited in analysis. In summary, the results contribute to better understanding of MSE response to seismic events, performance of lightweight backfills, and reliability of numerical solutions, while warranting further analytical work using advanced soil models. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Realistic modeling of clay response under irregular cyclic loading requires an appropriate description of the stress-strain relationship. SANICLAY is a general name for a family of Simple ANIsotropic CLAY plasticity models developed over the years on the general framework of the classical modified Cam-Clay model. this paper presents a recent bounding surface extension of the SANICLAY models, named SANICLAY-B, that significantly enhances their performance in simulation of different loading reversal histories. Two key elements of the proposed formulation are a moving projection center and a damage parameter that affects the plastic modulus. these elements result in more realistic simulation of continuous stiffness reduction and stress-strain loops in cyclic loading. Both SANICLAY and SANICLAY-B models are implemented in a fully coupled nonlinear dynamic finite element platform. the performance of the models is illustrated in a nonlinear site response analysis of an inclined soil column subjected to a base excitation, and the simulation results are presented and discussed. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

In the current study, we focus on the efficiency of gradient-based optimization algorithms for optimal control of turbulent flows, and investigate the number of forward and adjoint simulations that are required per unit of cost-function improvement. Different algorithms are considered, i.e., two versions of a nonlinear conjugate gradient algorithm (CG), a limited memory quasi-Newton method (L-BFGS), a damped L-BFGS method and a truncated Newton method. the comparative tests between L-BFGS and the truncated Newton methods are examined on an extended Rosenbrock function. Next to that, the L-BFGS, the damped L-BFGS and the CG methods are applied to an unconstrained distributed control problem that consists of the optimization of a distributed force in the direct numerical simulation of an incompressible turbulent channel flow.

Composites reinforced by knitted fabric are materials with high potential in aerospace, machine building and civil engineering industries. In the same time such materials are mechanically non-linear with a high dynamic energy absorption possibility. Precise mechanical properties prediction has the great importance for such material use in the novel structures. Elastic properties of such material was calculated using structural modeling based on reinforcement and matrix mechanical and geometrical properties and FEM calculations. Structural failure model was elaborated for composite plate reinforced by multilayered knitted fabric. Probabilistic approach was used and was compared with elaborated deterministic structural model predictions. numerical simulations results were compared with experimental data and comparison results were discussed.

Time-dependent problems modeled by hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) can be reformulated in terms of boundary integral equations (BIEs) and solved via the boundary element method (BEM). In this context, the analysis of damping phenomena that occur in many physics and engineering problems is of particular interest. Starting from a recently developed energetic space-time weak formulation of BIEs related to wave propagation problems, we consider an extension for the damped wave equation and a coupling algorithm is presented, which allows a flexible use of FEM and BEM as local discretization techniques. PDEs associated to BIEs will be weakly reformulated by the energetic approach. this method has shown excellent stability properties, which are crucial in guaranteeing an efficient BEM-FEM coupling. Several numerical results on 1D model problems are presented and discussed.
