Based on Burland's void index, a simple systematic method is proposed by Liu et al. (2013), for estimating the compression behaviour of reconstituted clays. the compression behaviour of clays is idealised as linear segments in the I-nu similar to ln p' space. the variation of available data in engineering practice has been taken into consideration in the proposed method. the accuracy of the estimation increases withthe level of available data. In this paper, the new method is employed to simulate the compression behaviour of clays with various water contents and the influence on the compression behaviour of reconstituted clays by water contents is analyzed.

the simulation of mechanical behaviour of rock joints is a valuable contribution to the validation of shear strength criteria and to understand how experimental results can be influenced by scale effects and testing conditions. Two peak shear strength criteria are applied in numerical simulations of shear tests in order to understand how a geometrical predefined joint profile can be equivalent to applying specific shear criteria to a linear interface representing that joint. Saw-toothed and standard Barton's joint profiles were considered. It was found that numerical simulations can reproduce failure laws for peak shear strength calibrated from experimental results. the development of this study is expected to have a valuable contribution to joint roughness numerical modelling specially in post-peak behaviour.

the vibroflotation technique is one of the most extended procedures to improve the compaction and the bearing capacity of a granular soils. It consists of the densification phenomenon produced at dry or completely drained granular soils when they are subjected to point vibrations, by means of an equipment called vibrator. this technique is usually designed according to total empirical approaches. A numerical formulation is presented in this paper, employing the endochronic based densification constitutive law, which has been implemented in a dynamic numerical finite element code formulated in axisymmetric coordinates. Absorbing boundaries have been considered in the numerical codes aiming to avoid the spurious reflection of waves in the soil limits, since they would produce not real densification ratios in the numerical computations.

the interstitial water within soils should be taken into account for soil slopes' stability. In soil nailed slopes, pore-water is usually drained out by strip drains at the wall surface, and by horizontal drains within the soil body. Such drains are a path for explicit flow of water. In this paper, effectiveness of horizontal drains is examined from unsaturated view;that is, while there is no explicit flow, drains may still help soil dry out which contributes to stability. this hypothesis is evaluated by a preliminary approximation, and by numerical modeling. the numerical modeling is carried out by devising equivalence between unsaturated evaporation from a soil body and saturated consolidation of it. A set of parameters are devised which make a practicing engineer able to use usual commercial geotechnical software to model evaporation. It is anticipated that unsaturated phenomena should be considered in devising recommendations for drainage systems in soil nail walls.

Withthe on-going development of the Material Point Method (MPM) for geotechnical applications, it becomes clear that this method has a strong potential in the analysis of offshore foundations. In particular the installation of monopiles, suction caissons, spud cans and anchors as well as the analysis of their installation effects involve large deformations and material flow has to be taken into account. Although quite versatile in general, the Finite Element Method (FEM) has its limitations when it comes to very large deformations and material flow. the MPM fills the gap and enables such analyses which were not feasible before. Particular developments that have enabled the aforementioned applications are: (i) Smooth transition from Finite Element mesh to MPM domain, (ii) Smooth contact between soil and structures (iii) Coupling between deformation, effective stress and pore pressure to simulate undrained conditions. this paper will demonstrate an example of spudcan penetration into fully saturated soil with focus on the capabilities of the Material Point Method in geotechnicalengineering. Conclusions are drawn on possibilities and further requirements.

the elastoplastic finite element modelling of normally consolidated and overconsolidated clayey soils with Critical State Models requires that careful consideration be given to the diverse singularities present in the respective yield surfaces if numerical stability, convergence and accuracy are to be achieved in the stress updating procedure that is central to the incremental-iterative approach. In this paper a detailed analysis is presented of the backward Euler stress update procedure in singularity regions of the modified Cam-clay and p-q-theta models, with recourse to visual aids specifically developed for this purpose.

the paper deals with a numerical investigation of the propagation stage of debris avalanches. Two complementary cases are analyzed: i) a benchmark open slope followed by almost flat piedmont, ii) a case study of Southern Italy which involved pyroclastic soils originating from Vesusius volcano. A hydro-mechanical coupled depth-integrated Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) model is used. Irregular topography of slope, bed entrainment and pore water pressure variations are taken into account. the key role of bed entrainment is outlined and a satisfactory back-analysis of the case study is obtained. Globally, the achieved results indicate that the chosen model is an advisable tool for the analysis of debris avalanches.
