When modelling the development of slip surfaces in strain softening soils, the finite element method can suffer from mesh dependency and a lack of convergence of the analysis. the calculation of strains using a nonlocal method avoids the independent softening of a solitary point that can cause these symptoms. Nonlocal methods calculate the strain at a point with reference to the strains at the calculation points surrounding it. In this study, a biaxial compression analysis is used to compare the original and two modified nonlocal methods to two local strain softening methods. Meshes with different discretisation permit a comparison of the mesh dependency of these methods. All the nonlocal methods are found to have significantly less mesh dependency than the local methods. Both modified nonlocal methods exhibit less mesh dependency than the original approach, but one is shown to be unstable as the mesh is refined.

Being composed of three different phases, namely, soil, water and air, as well as three different interfaces, unsaturated soils are too complex to be dealt with conventional modeling techniques. In recent years, a great wealth of research has been devoted to introduce new modeling tools which can better portray pore and grain geometry and the two-fluid flow occurring in these media. Such conceptual models have improved our understanding of hydraulics and physics of unsaturated soils. Pore network models (PNMs), vastly used in other disciplines such as petroleum engineering, are one of these advances which have recently been introduced in unsaturated soil mechanics. PNMs are basically conceptual models consisting of pores and throats that idealize the porous space of unsaturated soils. When the geometry and topology of the pore network are specified, then physical laws can be implemented in the network to model various phenomena of interest. the use of PNMs in geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics has been limited. A critical review of basics of pore network modeling, the current state of the art and the potential capabilities of PNMs to answer the questions of unsaturated soil mechanics is greatly beneficial. this paper aims at introducing the capabilities of pore network models in modeling unsaturated soil behavior. It demonstrates how PNMs can be employed to address different problems in unsaturated soil mechanics. For this purpose, recent advancements are reviewed and future perspectives are introduced. Furthermore, a PNM is employed to demonstrate the capabilities of PNMs to model the temperature effects on SWRC. the results indicate that the PNM is capable of capturing the experimental features observed in laboratory. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

the sequestration of excessive CO2 emissions from point sources into deep geological formations is a short to mid-term strategy component for mitigating climate change while maintaining the security and stability of the world's energy systems. this storage procedure will result in a series of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical processes within the geological formation which may affect its capacity, transmissibility and integrity as a storage medium. this work presents the development of a numerical model, in view of recent carbon storage initiatives, which is to aid potential design, monitoring and legislation. the emphasis of the model formulation is on coupling the driving hydro-mechanical behaviour due to the induced pressure gradients within a fractured reservoir system. It is a Biot-type double-porosity model, coupling immiscible two-component fluid behaviour within a deformable porous medium with a coinciding continuous fracture network. the governing equations are outlined with their constitutive relationships in view of the application. For their solution, the equations are discretised spatially with a Galerkin formulation, and the subsequent non-linearities are solved iteratively through an adaptive temporal discretisation scheme. A simplified benchmark storage scenario is modelled with realistic parameters which is then assessed. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

the elastic visco-plastic model with non-linear creep function may describe the long term behavior of clayey soils more accurately. However, it is a challenging task to determine the parameters of the non-linear creep function using conventional oedometer data. this paper presents a numerical method to determine several model parameters simultaneously, while adopting consolidation data during excess pore water pressure dissipation by applying an advanced optimization tool embedded in MATLAB. Crank-Nicholson finite difference procedure is adopted to solve the partial differential equations of the consolidation equation in combined with the non-linear elastic visco-plastic model. As a result, the time dependent strain and excess pore water pressure dissipation in one dimensional compression are computed simultaneously. In this paper, a case study is presented to evaluate and validate the proposed method.

In the present work, an airfoil with self adaptive camber is investigated. the camber is passively adapted to the flow by a kinematic coupling between the leading and trailing edge. For validation, the rigid NACA 643618 airfoil is simulated at different angles of attack. Additional simulations are performed for a prescribed deflection at the leading and trailing edge with a qualitatively good agreement to experimental data. Conducting a series of fully coupled FSI simulations, a reduction in the lift coefficient of 44 % compared to the rigid airfoil could be achieved. the results from the CFD are compared to those of an inviscid panel method, where a deviation of approximately 10 % in the mean lift coefficient for the FSI scenario is observed.

this study presents a reliability-based design method for geotechnical structures based on the observational method, which can be used as a methodology for the performance verification of geotechnical structures. In the proposed method, the soil-water coupled finite element analysis is utilized as a performance-verification method, and stochastic uncertainties inherent in the geotechnical parameters are evaluated by a Monte Carlo simulation. the proposed method can select the optimum design/construction method from several design alternatives, from the viewpoint of Life Cycle Cost, and the predictions at the initial design stage are sequentially updated by the particle filter. the proposed method is applied to a numerical example of the construction problem of embankment specified quantitative performance criteria, such as allowable settlements and the probability of their exceedance, and the feasibility of the method is examined in this example. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Increasing traffic intensity and train speed in modern railway tracks require complex analysis with focus on soil dynamic behavior. Proper modeling of the dynamic behavior of the railway track system (railway track, trainload, embankment materials, and subsoil) is essential to obtain realistic results. the passing train loads its subgrade and ballast dynamically. It causes different type of deformations in soil embankment. the magnitude of the inelastic part of deformations depends on different factors such as the dynamical stiffness of embankment soil, the type of natural soil under embankment, and its variation along the route. Measurements of dynamical response of embankment and original soil layers for predicting their dynamical stability are essential in design of railway embankments. In recent years, many comprehensive expensive experiments have been conducted to obtain dynamical response and property of the soil, for instance, using geophones and accelerometers to measure the velocity of the waves produced in soil depth. the main objective of this paper is to propose a method to simulate moving loads of trains in geotechnical software, which in this moment has limited feature for simulation of moving *** tested this method using the platform PLAXIS. Furthermore, the railway track embankment was modeled with different constitutive soil models and combination of them such as Linear Elastic (LE), Mohr-Coulomb (MC) and Hardening Soil small-strain (HS-small). Experimental results of a high-speed train embankment on soft subsoil have been used to evaluate the results from numerical simulations. the quality of the moving load's model and its sensitivity to different soil constitutive model was also investigated. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

It is known from a number of field and model tests that piles under cyclic axial loading can exhibit a significant reduction of capacity compared to the static loading case. the main reason for this phenomenon is the compaction of the soil beneath the pile due to cyclic shearing. From the limited number of tests available, interaction diagrams have been developed, which give the number of load cycles leading to failure dependent on the mean load and the amplitude of the cyclic load portion, both related to the static capacity. However, such diagrams cannot account for soil conditions or pile geometry and pile stiffness. A generally valid calculation approach for the problem is not yet available. A numerical simulation scheme is presented, which allows the calculation of pile capacity reduction due to cyclic loading for a certain pile-soil system. the method is described in detail in the paper, and calculation results for piles embedded in sand are presented. Herewith, the quality of the method is assessed. Finally, recommendations regarding necessary further investigations and improvements of the method are given. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Settlement behavior of piled foundations on homogenous rock was investigated using an extensive three-dimensional finite element analysis of different piled-foundation models. Effects of pile slenderness ratio, pile spacing, and subgrade stiffness on such behavior were studied. In spite of having a significant number of publications on this research area, this effort is distinguished by adopting pile-subgrade stiffness ratios that simulate piled foundations on sedimentary rocks. Charts were developed to estimate the elastic settlement of piled foundations and help in choosing the optimum pile spacing and length that limit foundation settlement to tolerable levels. the study also showed that having highly stiff rock mass as subgrade for shallow foundations may make piles practically ineffective as settlement reducers regardless of their length and spacing. Settlement values yielded from the finite element analysis were compared with those calculated from equations commonly utilized in estimating elastic settlement of foundations.

Odelouca dam is an embankment dam, with 76m height, recently constructed in the south of Portugal. It is zoned with a core consisting of colluvial and residual schist soil, and with soil-rockfill mixtures making up the shells (weathered schist with a significant fraction of coarse sized particles). this paper presents a numerical analysis of Odelouca dam construction. In this analysis the explicit finite difference program FLAC is used. An unconventional elastoplastic soil model, a Subloading Surface type model, implemented into the program, is used to model the embankment materials. the main results are compared with those obtained with the Modified Cam Clay Model. the model's constants and internal variables initial values are determined from a comprehensive testing programme carried out in the Civil engineering National Laboratory (LNEC) for the hydraulic and mechanical characterization of the materials used and a Subloading Surface type model with plastic anisotropy is used to model its behaviour. Computational results are then compared to the ones obtained from the dam's monitoring system during the construction stage.
