A new tool is proposed for the coupling of the Harmonic Balance Method and the Asymptotic numerical Method to treat non-linear dynamical problems. MANITOO which is a C++ library devoted to the resolution of non-linear problems using the Asymptotic numerical Method is specifically adapted. the resolution is automated by applying operator overloading at two levels. Firstly, a data type with appropriate arithmetic operators accounting for the harmonic variables is defined. Only simple operators (+,-,*) are overloaded in this study. Secondly, as available in MANITOO, high order derivatives, needed for the ANM, are automatically computed with a forward mode of automatic differentiation. the technique is applied to solve two classical problems with cubic non-linearities : the first one deals with a Duffing oscillator and the second consists in solving the vibration of a plate discretized with finite element and considering geometric non-linearities.

the process of electron flow spin-polarization in a waveguide with two narrows in magnetic field is investigated. Asymptotic formulas for the main characteristics of resonant tunneling for 'sufficiently small' diameters of the waveguide's narrows are presented. they contain constants, which are found numerically by solving some auxiliary problems. Also, we obtain the same characteristics of the process by means of numerical calculation of the waveguide's scattering matrix. the obtained results show that asymptotic and numericalmethods give equivalent outcomes at wide band of the narrows' diameters. the numerical method becomes ill-conditioned as the diameter decreases. However, the asymptotics remains reliable at such condition. On the other hand, the asymptotics gives way to the numerical method as the diameter increases;in fact, for wide narrows the resonant tunneling vanishes by itself.

the methods of creation of the metallic polycrystalline structures based on the molecular dynamics simulations are described in this paper. the atomic interactions are modeled using the Lennard-Jones and the Morse potentials. the unique parameters and features (e.g. grain size) of each approach are discussed and illustrated with proper numerical examples. Additionally, the comparison between mechanical properties of the mono- and polycrystalline structures is included and the elastic constants and the stress-strain relations of the obtained molecular models of materials are presented.

While computer aided analyses of load bearing structures are getting more importance, the need for realistic constitutive equations increases. Furthermore, the evaluation of experimental investigations requires appropriate numerical models. there are certain values required, especially in case of shear. the problem can be illustrated by, for example, changing the shear-value between the versions of DIN 1052 in 2004 and 2008. this paper introduces a three-dimensional constitutive model for timber products. the model is based on several lab experiments with timber under tension, compression and shear forces illustrated, for instance by the european Code EC 5. An experiment with pure shear is not possible at all. that is why another kind of investigation had to be found. Most existing numerical models use the approach of plain stress.

this document presents a hierarchy of preconditioning techniques embedded into a multistage Runge-Kutta method applied to approximate steady state solutions of high Reynolds number viscous flows. the method is used as smoother in an agglomerated multigrid method. Different ways are suggested to construct coarse grid levels and coarse grid equations. Finally several of the possible combinations are suggested and investigated. numerical examples demonstrate the superiorities and inferiorities of some of these methods.

the topic of this work is modelling and numerical integration of rigid multibody systems with unilateral contacts. the unsteady behaviour because of impacts or stick-slip transitions in such systems lead to diverse problems in the numerical integration of the equations of motion. this paper discusses different possibilities to formulate the set-valued force laws and the dynamic equations. the structure of the resulting system of equations is closely related to two commonly used integration methods which are well suited to certain kinds of technical systems but provide drawbacks as well. By a combination of the "event-driven" and "times-tepping" integration this work wants to overcome their disadvantages. the operation and implementation of the new scheme will be discussed, especially focusing the criteria to switch between the two sub-modes. Academic examples are used for demonstration of this scheme.

the paper concerns the problems of numerical solution of non-linear Fourier equation describing the transient heat conduction. In particular, the non-linearities resulting from temperature-dependent thermophysical parameters (volumetric specific heat and thermal conductivity) are considered. the basic problems presented in this paper are connected withthe possibilities of artificial linearization of the task discussed (at the stage of numerical computations), in other words the methods of linear problem solution rebuilding on the solution of non-linear one are shown. the procedures discussed can be a very effective supplement for different variants of the boundary element method which, as a rule, requires a linear form of energy equation. In the paper the generalization of alternating phase truncation method (APTM), the artificial heat source method, the temporary temperature field correction method and its generalization are presented. In the final part the examples of numerical simulations are also shown.

the aim of this paper is to approach the problem of recognition of osteoporosis in human pelvic bone. the starting point was the images from tomography - on the base of obtained data the numerical model was created. Very important stage was to determinate the values of material parameters in numerical model. In the paper two methods were described. the first directly basis of data from radiological examinations (in this case it is Quantitative Computed Tomography). But with regard to difficulties with tomography data the second method was applied - the numerical simulations. the changeability of material parameters represents non-homogenous structure of bone (each finite element one can subordinate individual values of material parameters). After FEM analysis one can compare results of correct and healthy state. On the base of relationship between CT images or decreasing of bone mass and results from strength analysis the procedure to aid of detection of risky state in pelvic bone was proposed.

An accurate and computationally effective description of failure in laminated composites requires a physically sound description of the elementary degradations. In this work, a global-local numerical strategy which couples a mesoscale, continuum model and a microscale, hybrid discrete and continuum model is presented: while the mesoscale model enables one to carry out structural scale simulations with a reasonable computational cost, the microscale model introduces a more accurate description in the zones where significant localization of the degradation takes place. the numerical strategy proposed here is based on a non-intrusive approach, using the existing implementations of the two models, and on the definition of a mixed link which transfers only a selected part of the information between the scales.

A hybrid differential transformation and finite difference scheme is used to analyze the complex nonlinear behavior of an electrostatically-actuated micro circular plate devices which is not easily analyzed using traditional methods such as perturbation theory or Galerkin approach method due to the complexity of the interactions among the electrostatic coupling effect, the residual stress and the nonlinear electrostatic force. the numerical results for the pull-in voltage are found to deviate by no more than 2.09% from the literature using various computational methods. thus, the basic validity of the hybrid numerical scheme is confirmed. Moreover, the effectiveness of a combined DC / AC loading scheme in driving the micro circular actuator is examined. It is shown that the use of an AC actuating voltage in addition to the DC driving voltage provides an effective means of tuning the dynamic response of the micro circular plate.
