A new formulation of Kapila's five-equation model for inviscid, non-heat-conducting, compressible two-fluid flow is derived, together with an appropriate numerical method. the new formulation uses flow equations based on conservation laws and exchange laws only. the two fluids exchange momentum and energy, for which exchange terms are derived from physical laws. All equations are written as a single system of equations in integral form. No equation is used to describe the topology of the two-fluid flow. Relations for the Riemann invariants of the governing equations are derived, and used in the construction of an Osher-type approximate Riemann solver. A consistent finite-volume discretization of the exchange terms is proposed. the exchange terms have distinct contributions in the cell interior and at the cell faces. For the exchange-term evaluation at the cell faces, the same Riemann solver as used for the flux evaluation is exploited. numerical results are presented for two-fluid shock-tube and shockbubble-interaction problems, the former also for a two-fluid mixture case. All results show good resemblance with reference results.

A robust and accurate solution technique is required for the routine and reliable use of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods based on sophisticated turbulence models such as Reynolds Stress Transport Models (RSTM). A segregated solution method is preferred in view of code modularity and performance. In a density-based procedure, conservation errors can lead to stability problems if a turbulence model is solved in a segregated manner. In order to avoid these problems, a correction to the scalar convective fluxes has been derived which restores full consistency with the discretisation of the corresponding terms in the Navier-Stokes equations and achieves proper conservation of the transported scalar quantities. the method has been successfully implemented in the DLR CFD solver TRACE and validated using a standard Linear Eddy Viscosity Model (LEVM). With an appropriately chosen slope limiter, stable solutions have been obtained for RSTM computations. this enables the application of RSTMs to complex flows without the additional efforts of a fully coupled solution method.

An imaging method of acoustic spinning modes propagating within a circular duct is introduced in this paper. Nowadays, the measurements within a duct have to be conducted using in-duct microphone array, which is unable to provide information of complete acoustic solutions across the test section. the proposed method can estimate immeasurable information by forming a so-called observer. the proposed method is developed in a theoretical way. the fundamental idea behind the testing method was originally developed in control theory for ordinary differential equations. Spinning mode propagation, however, is formulated in partial differential equations. A finite difference technique is used to reduce the associated partial differential equations to a classical form in control. the observer method can thereafter be applied straightforwardly. the algorithm is recursive and can be operated in real-time. A numerical simulation for a straight circular duct is conducted to demonstrate the proposed method. the acoustic solutions reconstructed on the cross section compare well with analytical solutions. the good agreement suggests the potential of the proposed method in acoustic experiments.

Beam elements play an important role in modelling of various engineering structures. their applicability is strongly dependent on the accuracy, robustness and efficiency of the numerical formulation. these properties prove to be of utmost importance especially when dealing with demanding initial or deformed geometry and material non-linearity. Many finite-element discretizations of three-dimensional beams are based on the approximated displacement and rotation field. In displacement-rotation-based formulations of three-dimensional beams evaluation of strains, internal forces and moments requires differentiation of the assumed kinematic filed. this affects the accuracy of these quantities which might be especially important in materially non-linear problems. Interpolation of rotations and/or their increments in a standard additive manner leads to non-objective strain measures. If the strains are assumed as interpolated variables, the additive-type of interpolation can be used without any restrictions. By such an approach determination of internal forces and moments would not require the differentiation. the fundamental problem of a strain-based formulation is the integration of rotations from the given rotational strains which is a demanding task.

We present a new approach to solve nonlinear parametric partial differential equations (PPDEs) with stochastic coefficients, which is based on the Reduced Basis (RB) method. It is imposed that the problem formulation allows for an affine decomposition in the (deterministic) parameter. the uncertainties in the coefficients are modeled using Karhunen-Loève expansions. the nonlinearity is resolved using Newton's method with Fréchet derivatives. For the computation of a linear output functional, its first and second moment, and its variance, we additionally solve some linear dual problems. Statistical analysis is then done using the Monte Carlo (MC) method. We investigate offline/online decompositions that enable efficient computations independent of the number of degrees of freedom of the full system. We provide efficient and rigorous aposteriori error bounds for the state variable, the output functional, and the statistical quantities based upon the Brezzi-Rappaz-Raviart theory, dealing however with additional errors as a result of the uncertainty modeling. We present numerical experiments for a stationary quadratic convection-diffusion problem to illustrate different aspects of the proposed method.

the present FEM formulation of the static and dynamic analysis of beam structures is novel in several respects. A completely new formulation of the three dimensional geometrically exact beam theory based on the quaternion algebra is proposed in which the rotations are fully replaced by the rotational quaternions. the same approach is used for both the linearization and the numerical implementation. A special type of the FEM is introduced, where the kinematic quantities, the displacements and the rotational quaternions, are chosen as the primary unknown functions. the governing equations are discretized by the collocation method and the variations of the primary unknowns are interpolated with polynomials. At the internal collocation points, the equality of equilibrium and constitutive internal forces is satisfied in a weak form, while the equilibrium equations are strongly satisfied on the boundaries of the beam. the proposed method is free of shear locking, is objective with respect to strains, has singularity-free rotations and enables us to apply a wider range of time integrators.

A local active noise control method that uses stochastic numerical acoustical modeling is introduced. the frequency domain acoustical simulations are performed by a sequence solutions to Helmholtz equations approximated by FEM. the proposed ANC method maps microphone measurements linearly to the output signals of antinoise actuators. the matrix defining the linear mapping is optimized for each frequency to minimize expected value of the noise. the paper concentrates on defining the quadratic least-squares optimization problem for the minimization of the sound pressure field in the silent region. the formulation leads to a robust and accurate noise control in stochastic domains that has a stochastic noise source. the method is demonstrated numerically by an experiment in a car cabin, and significant noise reduction is demonstrated at lower frequencies.

In this paper, we present a recently developed progressive damage model for composites (CPDM) that allows the switching between different damage modes during the numerical process to mimic real physical behaviour. the modelled damage modes are ranging from matrix cracking to fibre breakage or delamination. Moreover, the CPDM is flexible in the sense that provides the basic structure to include variations on the evolution of damage modes whenever appropriate by modifying basic second-order tensors. Ongoing work for potential linkage to the extended finite element method (XFEM) will be also shown.

the goal of this work is to present numerical simulations for non-Newtonian flow problems using discontinuous finite element methods. the problems are modeled by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations where the viscosity depends nonlinearly on the shear rate, following a p-power rule (p-INS). the governing equations are solved numerically by Local discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (LDG) choosing both equal and mixed order local space for velocity and pressure. the velocity gradient is introduced as an auxiliary variable and the p-INS system is decomposed into a first order system including the projection of the nonlinear viscous stress tensor terms to the local discontinuous space. Every equation of the resulting first order system is discretized under the DG element by element technique. For the viscous term, we apply a methodology similar to the one proposed for the p-structure nonlinear elliptic problems, where the numerical fluxes are devised according to the p-structure of the problem. Using the divergence free constraint, the nonlinear advective term is expressed in a divergence form, and finally the first order terms are discretized using the Lax-Friedrichts numerical fluxes, inheriting the conservativity of the DG method. For the time discretization sstage Diagonally Implicit Runge-Kutta schemes are applied. numerical experiments on benchmark problems demonstrate that the method is efficient for approximating solutions of p-INS problems.

In the elasto-plastic numerical analyses it is interesting to detect plasticized zones and monitor their propagation parallel with the increase of load. By numerical procedures based on the weak formulation, plastic failure always records before it really happens. More efficient solution of non-linear problems can be obtained by applying the procedure of the strong formulation with an arbitrary increase in the number of basis functions on the domain. In this work the numerical model for the elasto-plastic analysis of prismatic bars subjected to torsion is developed. the functions implemented in this model are Fup basis functions which belong to the class of atomic functions. the collocation method is used to form a system of equations in which the differential equation of the problem is satisfied in collocation points of closed domain, while boundary conditions are satisfied exactly at the domain boundary. the propagation of plastic zones in the cross-section is monitored by applying the incrementaliterative procedure until failure. An approximate solution of arbitrary accuracy is attained by hierarchically increasing the number of basis functions during non-linear calculation (multilevel approach) in places where plastic yielding occurs. the results obtained by the proposed method are compared with the existing exact solutions and numerical solutions obtained by the Finite Element Method. It can be concluded that the presented numerical model efficiently simulates the real non-linear behavior of the structure and provides excellent results for the elaborated problems.
