the paper presents a procedure for utilization of photographic image data via digital photogrammetry for use in geotechnics. the process of data manipulation in various programs in thoroughly described step-by-step. the motivation of the development is to prepare the final geometrical structure for finite element method software, where numerical modelling of problems such as analysis of stability and deformations can be investigated. Additionally, methodology for applying spatial and temporal evolution of geometry is described. As an example of the procedure, a case study of development of 3D model of internal landfill of open cast coal mine Bílina, Czechia is presented. © 2021, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

this paper presents a possible modelling technique for the propagation of the so-called head check cracks. the term head check (HC) refers to a kind of multiple hairline cracking in the railhead caused by rolling contact fatigue (RCF). this phenomenon has become widespread in recent decades and is still a major problem for the rail industry. the aim of this study is to create a specific finite element model to examine head checks numerically in order to gain a better understanding of the behaviour of these cracks. the paper summarizes the most important aspects of the phenomenon under study and outlines the methods used. Regarding the fatigue-based crack growth simulation, the Extended Finite Element Method was applied. the finite element analysis examines the development of the already-initiated cracks in the cross-section of the rail. the finite element model also takes into account the effect of fluid forced between cracks using a certain technique. the study aims to explore the possibilities of the modelling technique and to estimate the level at which the head check phenomenon can be examined from this approach. Consequently, the exact numerical value of the results might be less relevant, but the characteristics of the results may become rather more interesting. Results achieved in the study have shown that the developed method can be used to examine the head check phenomenon, even if it needs further improvements. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is widely used in both scientific and industrial contexts to provide valuable insights into cardiovascular flows. CFD supports the development of medical devices, describes complex flow physical phenomena associated with disease generation and progression, and even informs surgical planning. Non-invasive technologies such as 4D MRI provide detailed information about blood flow for a given patient, yet CFD allows higher spatial and temporal resolution less invasively. However, the advantages of CFD methods can only be realized through faithful geometry reconstruction, high-quality mesh generation, and suitable definition of patient- specific inlet and outlet boundary conditions. In this regard, 4D MRI measurements can provide the required data to calibrate and validate patient-specific CFD models. Hence, the combination of 4D MRI and CFD is crucial for accurate and efficient in-silico cardiovascular flow predictions for patient-specific geometries. Multiple CFD software, such as ANSYS, COMSOL, and SimVascular, have been widely used in published research works, yet the graphical user interfaces of these software packages have no explicit provisions for leveraging spatio-temporal 4D MRI data. Here, we present a framework to create accurate patient-specific CFD simulations leveraging spatiotemporal 4D MRI data and patient monitoring data. We discuss all aspects of patient-specific modeling, including geometry reconstruction, meshing, numerical simulation, and post-processing of results, focusing on the suitability of each software package and the ease with which the presented workflow can be implemented with the software.

Buoyant wakes are widely encountered in ocean environment and undersea vehicle flows. these are typically characterized by high Reynolds (Re) and Froude (Fr) numbers, so turbulence resolving CFD models of such flows, i.e., Direct numerical Simulation (DNS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES), require significant computational resources. therefore, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) based models are attractive for these configurations, but their performance hinges on numerous modeling assumptions. the inherently complex dynamics of stratified systems render eddy-viscosity-based modeling inappropriate. RANS Second-Moment Closure (SMC) based modeling is more suitable for such complex systems because they account for flow anisotropy by solving the transport equations of important second-moment terms. For stratified flows, turbulent density fluctuations and their auto- and velocity cross-correlations are dynamically important. Accordingly, at the SMC level of modeling, eleven transport equations are solved, and a range of sub-models are implemented for diffusion, pressure strain and scrambling, and dissipation, in the Reynolds stress, density flux, variance, and dissipation transport equations. In this work, we study the stratified wakes of axisymmetric towed bodies using SMC and DNS. Sub-models in the SMC are evaluated in terms of how well their exact Reynolds averaged form impact the accuracy of the full RANS closure. An ensemble average of 100 DNS realizations is conducted to obtain converged higher-order statistics for direct comparison. For a stratified towed wake at Re = 10000 and Fr = 2, RANS successfully captures the peak mean defect velocity and wake width evolution when accurate initial conditions are provided from DNS. However, RANS over-predicts the wake height, and turbulent kinetic and potential energies, and exhibits larger amplitude oscillations and slower decay rates. A two-stage fourth order temporal discretization approach is developed for compressible fluid dynamics in the framework of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods. Different from the classical Runge-Kutta (RK) temporal discretization, we use the two-stage temporal discretization and take the generalized Riemann problem (GRP) solver to construct numerical fluxes for better resolution. It turns out that we just need to solve moments and reconstruct initial data twice at every time step so as to save the computational cost and decrease the memory footprint. numerical results verified the performance of the proposed scheme. copyright © Crown copyright (2018).All right reserved.

Evidence supporting the implementation of three-dimensional (3D) slope stability analysis in geotechnical engineering practice has been mounting since the nineteen-seventies. Current levels of computational power and its accessibility has allowed researchers to investigate the significance of the 3D numerical analysis output compared to conventional 2D limit equilibrium approach. this study compares results of stability analyses of unsupported vertical cuts in the vadose zone using both 2D (GeoStudio 2019 R2) and 3D (FLAC3D) software. numerical analyses are carried out for various dimensions of unsupported vertical cuts excavated in an unsaturated glacial till. the findings from two different methods (i.e. 2D and 3D) and the limitations of 2D stability analysis are discussed.

the development of new strategies in the manufacturing chain of mechanical components is one promising way to achieve energy efficiency in the production of machine and automotive components. the development of advanced high strength steels by exploration of metallurgical processes is one of the key objectives in this regard. On this occasion, continuous-cooling-bainitic-forging-steels offer an extraordinary path for accomplishing this goal, since they allow achieving their final microstructure directly after hot forging followed by controlled cooling, simultaneously attaining suitable mechanical properties. Considerable reduction of energy consumption is achievable thanks to the suppression of conventional energy-intensive heat treatments. In the present project, different concepts for a manufacturing chain with thermo-mechanical processing and subsequent surface treatment have been thoroughly investigated by means of advanced in-situ methods such as the High Energy X-Ray Diffraction and the use of Eddy-Current Sensor. Furthermore, Finite Element Method Simulation was employed to identify suitable processing windows regarding the parameters of the thermo-mechanical treatment. the knowledge delivered by these experimental and numerical investigations was then transferred to on-site industrial and laboratorial forgings to achieve tailored properties of treated parts. Different surface treatments based on plasma nitriding, deep rolling, and induction hardening were employed to further improve the surface-near properties for application as highly loaded components. Ground settlement during shield tunnel boring is a construction problem closely related to a variety of factors. To better control ground settlement, this paper proposes a ground settlement control method based on three collaborative methods: ground settlement prediction by FLAC3D numerical simulation, ground penetrating radar (GPR) backfilling grouting quality inspection and surface settlement monitoring. the results show that: the settlement pattern calculated by numerical simulation during excavation satisfies the peck settlement curve, and the maximum settlement does not exceed 6mm; the quality monitoring and dynamic feedback mechanism of backfill grouting can effectively guide the grouting construction and ensure compact grouting, and the results of monitoring the settlement of the tunnel surface show that the settlement of the surface and the settlement and tilt values of the building are within the permissible range.

In the present work a NURBS-based framework for shape and topology optimization is presented. the methodology uses fixed grids with immersed boundaries based on a Brinkman penalization method. Compared to other available approaches for topology optimization the number of design variables is reduced and a mathematical description of the solid boundaries is given by NURBS. Two test cases are used to investigate the presented method. the first one compares the proposed method with a traditional shape optimization approach using body-fitted grids. the second one proves the capability of the method for topological changes of the flow domain during the optimization process. copyright © Crown copyright (2018).All right reserved.

three decades ago, Unated Nations initiated new approach linking social, economic and environmental issues – sustainable development. It was initially defined through eight Millenium Development Goals to be achieved by 2015 and, thereafter, through 17 Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by 2030. Within numerous initiatives to contribute to SDGs from various points of science, geophysicists gave their contribution by establishing committees in the most eminent professional associations (EAGE, SEG, SPE, etc.). the most important result is the Geophysical Sustainability Atlas, where application of geophysical methods in solving different problems, particularly within humanitarian expert projects is illustrated. Goal of the paper is to show significance of project evaluation in terms of UN SDGs on specific example – GwB expert humanitarian project of landslides investigation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Implementation of the project is evaluated on the basis of six evaluation items proposed by OECD-DAC: relevance, effectiveness, impact, coherence, efficiency and sustainability, but also how they contributed to the SDGs. this paper is the first example of project assessment of a GwB project. © 2022 NSG.
