Concurrent multiscale analysis of quasi-brittle heterogeneous materials such as concrete and rock is conducted employing non-overlapping domain decomposition techniques. Initially, a coarse discretization with effective properties is considered at each domain. A zoom-in technique is performed at those domains in which non-linearities take place. the coarse mesh is replaced with a fine discretization which includes the lower scale constituents, e.g. aggregates or reinforcement. the present framework captures the interaction between the mesoscopic constituents and the strain/stress fields. the resulting crack path is in agreement with the one obtained with direct numerical simulations. It is shown that the interscale relations enforced at the interface between coarse and fine domains play an important role in the global response of the material.

A numerical investigation is performed into the mixing performance of electrokinetically-driven power-law fluids in a microchannel containing patterned blocks. the effects of the geometry parameters of the patterned blocks and the flow behavior index in the power-law model on the mixing efficiency within the microchannel are explored. the results show that the mixing efficiency can be improved by increasing the width and length of the blocks and extending the total length of the block region. In addition, the results show that the flow behavior index in the power-low model has a significant effect on the mixing performance. Specifically, the volumetric flow rate increases with a decreasing flow behavior index, and therefore results in a poorer mixing performance. It is shown that a heterogeneous patterning of the zeta potential on the upper surfaces of the rectangular blocks prompts the formation of local flow recirculations, and therefore improves the mixing efficiency. In addition, it is shown that the mixing performance improves with an increasing magnitude of the heterogeneous surface zeta potential.

In many cases, the design of a tracking controller can be significantly simplified by the use of a 2-DOF control structure including a feedforward control, i.e. the inversion of the nominal system dynamics. Unfortunately, the computation of this feedforward control is not easy if the system is nonminimum-phase. Important examples of such systems are flexible multibody systems such as flexible manipulators. there are several approaches to the numerical computation of the exact inversion of a flexible multibody system. In this paper, the singular perturbed form of such mechanical systems is used to give an analytic solution to a feedforward control which makes the systems to even though not exactly but approximately track a certain trajectory. the control signal is then computed as a series expansion in terms of the flexibilities of the bodies of the multibody system. the effectiveness of this approach is shown by the simulation of a two-link flexible manipulator.

In this study, a two-dimensional rate-dependent gradient crystal plasticity model for non-convex energetic hardening is formulated and applied to the simulation of inelastic microstructure formation. In particular, non-convex hardening is modeled via a Landau- Devonshire potential for self-hardening and an interaction-matrix-based form for latent hardening. the algorithmic formulation and numerical implementation treats the displacement and glide-system slips as the primary field variables. Example numerical simulations are carried out for the case of tensile loading with periodic displacement and slip boundary conditions. the results for the formation of inelastic microstructures and their evolution under mechanical loading are compared and correlated features of the macroscopic stress-strain response such as stress relaxation.

this contribution deals with an experimental and numerical investigation of strengthening an existing concrete structure by adding a concrete overlay. In particular, the test program focused on the effects of shrinkage of the overlay on the behavior of the composite structure. In the experimental program the water desorption isotherm, the ultimate shrinkage strains and the mass water content in terms of drying time were determined on thin concrete slices. the test results provided the basis for identifying the material parameters of a multi-phase concrete model, consisting of the solid phase, the water phase and the gas phase, the latter being a mixture of dry air and water vapor. In addition, experiments on larger brick-shaped specimens were conducted for simulating the strengthening of an existing concrete structure by a concrete overlay in the laboratory. the brick-shaped specimens were subjected to drying, measuring the evolution of the mass water distribution and the shrinkage strains. After more than two years of drying, the top surface of the brick-shaped specimens was pretreated by water jetting and the concrete overlay was placed. Subsequently, the shrinkage strains and the mass water distribution were recorded for both the brick-shaped specimen and the concrete overlay. the latter tests were used for validating the numerical model.

Textile preforming is an important step in the production chain of textile composites. A load-adjusted distribution of the yarns is desired in order to fully exploit the mechanical potential of textile reinforcements. A numerical continuum mechanics approach for the simulation of the draping process was developed. It represents the non-linear characteristic deformation mechanisms of textiles: tension, in-plane shear and bending. Shell elements with uncoupled mechanical properties were used for the numerical model. Additionally, a laminate assembly was established to realize a bending behaviour, which is independent of the membrane stiffness. Material parameters were obtained from classical mechanical tests such as uniaxial strip tensile test, cantilever bending test and picture frame test. the numerical simulation model supports the load-oriented construction of complicated three-dimensional components and the determination of fiber movements during the forming process. Furthermore, zones for a local structure fixation can be derived from the simulation results. If areas with little or no shearing are fixed with thermoplast-based hybrid yarns and infrared radiation, the handling quality of the textile reinforcement structure can be improved without influencing the drapability. thus, an important framework for the application of textile composite reinforcements was created.

the purpose of the talk is to give a review on effective methods for the numerical solution of hyperbolic systems with parabolic relaxation. We consider mathematical models described by a set of hyperbolic equations with relaxation. As the relaxation parameter vanishes, the characteristic speeds of the system diverge, and the system reduces to a parabolic-type equation (typically a convection-diffusion equation). Several numerical schemes have been proposed in the literature, that are able to capture the limiting behavior, in spite of the divergence of the characteristic speeds. Such methods are usually based on an implicit treatment of the relaxation term and of the divergent part of the flux derivative. In general the approach leads to an explicit scheme for the underlying limit parabolic equation, thus suffering from the standard parabolic CFL restriction Δt ∝ Δx2. We present two approaches to treat the problem. the first one, that we call partitioned, is very close to what is already available in the literature. We show that implicit-explicit Runge-Kutta methods allow the construction of high order schemes for the numerical solution of such problems. With this approach, classical implementation of IMEX-RK would lead to an explicit scheme for the limit equation. In order to overcome this difficulty, a penalization method is proposed, which consists in adding two opposite terms, and to treat one of them explicitly and one implicitly. A second approach, that we call additive is based on an explicit treatment of the flux. Because of the divergence of the characteristic speeds, an additional condition has to be satisfied by the IMEX-RK to reach consistency in the relaxation limit. the parabolic restriction can be overcome also in this case with the same penalization technique. A numerical example is presented that shows the effectiveness of both approaches.

In recent years, combined systems based on vertical or horizontal handling have been implemented into european railway transport. In vertical and horizontal systems, loading and unloading require special terminals. Vehicles, using their own engines, are driven on and off platforms through a ramp at the last carriage (horizontal system). A innovative railway wagon with a rotatable low and a flat loading floor for bimodal transporting will be presented in the paper. this special wagon can be used for railway transporting of TIR type semitrailers and vehicles. Such structure can be used for transporting high vehicles, up to 4m height, on low gauges, such as GB1 gauge. the low floor construction allows quick and convenient loading and unloading of vehicles at low platforms (no cranes needed). the numerical investigation methodology and various FE models used in tests, verification and simulation studies of the wagon with the low rotatable platform and the obtained results can be used in development work in the area of special wagon design and modernization in the aspect of the service live extension. the elaborated method of investigations allows its usage at the stage of design as well as for the structures in use or under repairing.

the requirement of an optimized design in a countless number of engineering applications (e.g. tires, dampers, rubber seals), involving rubber and rubber-based composites, needs the fully and in-depth knowledge of viscoelastic dissipative phenomena, e.g. how they are related to material properties and macro- and micro- geometry of the interacting surfaces, and a powerful tool to predict the behavior of this kind of materials in terms of contact and friction. In this paper we propose an innovative numerical methodology to analyze the steadystate viscoelastic sliding or rolling contact and to calculate the friction contribution due to the viscoelastic bulk dissipation. the implemented boundary element method, which relies on an ad-hoc mathematical formulation, solves the problem in the space domain without having to carry out any discretization process of the time domain. the methodology is very general and powerful since it allows to handle materials with many relaxation times, thus overcoming the limitations of other analytical [1,7] and numerical [8,11,12,13] formulations. We exploit the numerical method to analyze the viscoelastic contact of a rigid sphere sliding at constant velocity over a linear viscoelastic half-space. In particular, a set of viscoelastic dissipation calculations is presented to display the peculiar dependence of this phenomenon on motion speed, normal load and temperature.

the nonlinear dynamic analysis of fluid-structure interactions has been given increased attention during recent years in offshore applications, e.g., drilling and production risers, subsea pipelines, mooring lines, marine cables and offshore platforms. this paper presents ALE based fluid-structure interaction methods for the offshore problems where the ALE methods are practical approach to couple existing fluid and structure solvers. From both the design and operational standpoint, it is important to be able to predict the hydrodynamic forces and motion of such structures caused by fluid-structure coupling. Due to the complexity of the hydroelastic problem, theoretical and semi-empirical models remain incomplete and problem specific. Typically, the simplified models rely on the force input as well as the added mass coefficient and geometric correlation parameters. Until recently, prediction of hydroelastic interactions and vortex-induced vibrations were primarily based on such semi-empirical methods. Our objective is to present some numerical developments to solve fluid flows with structural interactions. In particular, we are interested in realistic simulations of offshore applications involving low mass bodies such as flexible marine risers/cables with vortex-induced vibrations.
