Nowadays the fast and accurate analysis methods of blast wave - structures interaction are desired and often irreplaceable. numerical methods of mechanics implemented in the presented authors' research can be regarded as equally applicable and proper for assessing the damage caused by the detonation of an explosive material. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the comparison analysis of numerical methods for explosion process implementation, which are available in Ls-Dyna computer code. Dynamic response of steel surface subjected to shock wave produced from a detonation of the high explosive (HE) materials was assessed. In order to carry out such tests three analysis methods were used: first with coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation (ALE), second with Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics approach (SPH) and third with blast wave ConWep model. Nonlinear dynamic simulations were carried out using the explicit method, with central difference scheme with modified time integration of the equation of motion was implemented. Steel surfaces (half cylindrical and plain) loaded with pressure impulse were described by the nonlinear material model with strain rate effect implementation. From the carried out analyses general response of structure was obtained for all three methods. Subsequently results from performed simulations were compared with accuracy, effectiveness and computational time taking into consideration. Additionally, the influence of surface geometry shape was also investigated in terms of pressure wave dissipation and surface central point vertical displacement.

A lot of physical and engineering problems often deal with structures which have various geometrical symmetries. If the discretization of such problems is suitably adapted to respect symmetry properties, one can save computational costs and memory storage reducing the original problem to a family of smaller ones and obtaining the global solution from the superposition of the partial results. Here, we apply a technique for taking into account equivariance properties in the numerical treatment of space-time BIEs related to 3D wave propagation problems which are invariant under a finite group G of congruences of R3. this technique is based upon suitable restriction matrices strictly related to a system of unitary, irreducible, pairwise not-equivalent matrix representations of G. these restriction matrices will be applied in the framework of 3D energetic Galerkin boundary element method (BEM), where the discretization matrices have a block lower triangular Toeplitz structure, and the diagonal block, to be inverted at each time step, is typically dense. numerical results will be shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

this work is investigating a mechanical dysfunction of human lungs: Mucociliary clearance. the goal is to understand how diseases like cystic fibrosis impact mucus motion (by altering mucus viscosity, cilia vibrations, respiration cycle...) and to identify stagnation situations where pathogens proliferate. Strategies for computation of mucus flow around an epithelium ciliated cell are presented. Governing equations are proposed to take into account this complex geometry in motion in the surrounding highly viscous fluid. the characteristic Reynolds number of the flow is very small and mucus is modelled by Stokes problem with both variable viscosity and density. Epithelium displacement is taken into account using a penalization method. As density and viscosity follow a convection equation, these assumptions lead to an elliptic/hyperbolic coupling and non-linear equations. numerical implementations are discussed to get a fast, robust and accurate algorithm in three dimension based on fast elliptic solvers and Lagrangian methods.

In the last couple decades meshless methods, enlarge their application field and are today a competitive and alternative numerical method. the new meshless method proposed in this work uses the natural neighbour concept in order to enforce the nodal connectivity. With the natural neighbour concept it is possible to construct the background integration mesh, completely dependent on the nodal distribution, and simultaneously obtain, for each interest point, the respective influence domain. Used in the Galerkin weak form, the interpolation functions, which possess the delta Kronecker property, are constructed with a simple Euclidian-norm basis and an optional polynomial basis. the interpolation function construction is simple and its derivatives are easily obtained. In order to define the displacement field and the strain field the linear elasticity three-dimensional deformation assumptions are considered. Well-known benchmark examples are solved in order to prove the high accuracy and convergence rate of the proposed method. Examples prove that the proposed meshless method is flexible and accurate.

Continuous development of the automotive industry is associated with the search for construction materials that combine high strength with good plastic properties and which allow improvement of the process technology. DP steels meet the high requirements for materials currently used in the automotive industry. Production of DP steels is a very complex process requiring precise control of technological parameters during thermo-mechanical treatment. Design of these processes can be significantly improved by the numerical models of phase transformations occurring in the DP steels. the main aim of this work is multiscale modelling of the austenite decomposition into ferrite, bainite and martensite in processes of laminar cooling. Partial differential diffusion equation of carbon diffusion is solved with a moving boundary (Stefan problem). the solution was performed in the real microstructure of austenite, which was obtained using the electron microscope image and digital material representation. the developed model based on FEM solution of a diffusion equation allows to determine phase volume fractions, grain size, carbon segregation before the front of transformation in fluctuating temperature conditions. Results of numerical simulations were used for development of the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of DP steel strips.

this paper presents numerical results of a flow inside an axial-radial exhaust diffuser. According to experiences, this type of diffuser can suffer from a separation of the flow on the outer curved wall. this fact reduces the effective flow rate which leads to an increase of losses. It was shown, that an additional blowing into the stream causes under certain conditions, that the flow remains attached to the wall and thus significantly reduces losses. the diffuser is represented by an axisymmetrical channel which bends ninety degrees from the axis. the flow inside the channel is described by RANS equations with a k-omega turbulence model. Besides a full three dimensional model, a simplified model utilizing the axisymmetry was used. the boundary condition on the inlet is given by a prescribed total pressure and total temperature. On the outlet boundary, a static pressure is prescribed. the jet-like inflow is given by a mass flow rate. Different parameters of the blowing were studied and their influence on the flow was determined. the separation of the flow is sensitive to the turbulence model, so care must be taken. Also the cases with a rotating flow on the inlet were studied.

In this paper we consider a controllability method for the solution of the time-periodic scalar wave equation with a first order absorbing boundary condition describing the scattering of an incident wave by a sound soft obstacle. Solution of the time-harmonic equation is equivalent to finding a periodic solution for the corresponding time-dependent wave equation. We formulate the problem as an exact controllability one and solve the wave equation in time domain. In a mixed formulation we look for solutions in terms of time derivative and gradient. this kind of mixed formulation allows us to set up the optimal control problem in the space of square integrable functions. the spatial discretization is done using lowest order Raviart-thomas finite elements. No preconditioning is needed when solving the optimal control problem with the conjugate gradient method. We present numerical results concerning the accuracy and performance of the method.

For the purpose of studying the elastic behavior of concrete, a 3-D finite element model is used. A realistic method to represent concrete is adopted. At mesoscopic level, concrete is considered as a bi-phase material where coarse aggregates are dispersed in the mortar paste. the coarse aggregates are represented as spheres and placed randomly in a cylindrical concrete specimen. the aggregate generation should respect the De Larrard model where the minimum paste thickness is taken into consideration. this generation should also respect a specific aggregate size distribution curve. A method to mesh the aggregates and the mortar separately is used. As a result, Different concrete specimens having different aggregate distribution and different aggregate content are generated. At that stage, a compression test is applied to each specimen in order to show the influence of the aggregate generation on the concrete properties. the numerical approach is validated using experimental results issued from previous work and compared to a homogenization method. this model shows interesting results which can be used to predict the elastic behavior of concrete.

Traditionally, recovery based error estimators in linear elasticity have considered the evaluation of an enhanced stress field obtained from the raw Finite Element (FE) stress solution. Instead of that, one can also obtain a recovered displacement field from the FE displacements. Herein, we describe a superconvergent patch recovery of the displacement field which considers the local fulfilment of boundary and internal equilibrium equations, Dirichlet constraints and, for singular problems, the splitting of the displacement and stress fields into singular and smooth parts. numerical tests using problems with known analytical solution have been carried out to validate the proposed technique for error estimation and error bounding in energy norm and quantities of interest.

the process leading to the transition to turbulence of a flat-plate boundary layer already begins in the two dimensional region of a laminar boundary layer, far upstream of the region where the transition takes place. this process starts with the so called Tollmien-Schlichting waves that grow in amplitude as they travel downstream. After reaching certain amplitudes they trigger transition by producing turbulent spots. the attenuation or cancellation of such waves can lead to an extended laminar region of the boundary layer and thereby lead to reduced overall skin friction. the control of such waves in a flat-plate boundary layer using plasma actuators was investigated using direct numerical simulations. Several arrangements of actuators were investigated and the modification of the streamwise development of amplitudes was evaluated concerning the efficiency and effectiveness of the wave attenuation. the numerical procedures were validated with predictions of the growth of the wave amplitudes from Linear Stability Analysis for boundary-layer flow. the plasma actuators were numerically modeled as a body-force region, derived from experimental results. It was found that only the first and second actuators contribute significantly to the stabilizing effect, given that their streamwise distance is small enough.
