A parallel large-scale unstructured finite volume algorithm based on arbitrary Lagrangian- Eulerian (ALE) formulation has been developed in order to investigate Drosophila flight. the numerical algorithm based on side-centered finite volume method where the velocity vector components are defined at the mid-point of each cell face while the pressure is defined at the element centroid. the present arrangement of the primitive variables leads to a stable numerical scheme and it does not require any ad-hoc modifications in order to enhance pressure coupling. the continuity equation is satisfied within each element exactly and the summation of the continuity equations can be exactly reduced to the domain boundary, which is important for the global mass conservation. A special attention is also given to satisfy the geometric conservation law (GCL) at discrete level. the interpolation method for the convective fluxes is based on either the least square interpolation or the divergence-free constrained linear reconstruction. the mesh deformation is achieved by using an algebraic approach based on the minimum distance function at each time level while avoiding remeshing in order to enhance numerical robustness. For the algebraic solution of the resulting large-scale equations, a matrix factorization is introduced similar to that of the projection method for the whole coupled system and we use two-cycle of BoomerAMG solver for the scaled discrete Laplacian provided by the HYPRE library, a high performance preconditioning package developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which we access through the PETSc library. the present numerical algorithm is initially validated for the Kovasznay flow, the 2D/3D lid-driven cavity flow problem, the flow past an oscillating circular cylinder in a channel and the flow induced by an oscillating sphere in a cubic cavity. then the numerical algorithm is applied to the numerical simulation of flow field around a pair of flapping Drosop

this study deals with the use of optimization algorithms to determine efficient parameters of flow control devices. To improve the performance of systems characterized by detached flows and vortex shedding, the use of flow control devices such as oscillatory jets, are intensively studied, using numerical as well as experimental methods. However, the determination of efficient control parameters is still a bottleneck for industrial problems. therefore, we propose to couple a global optimization algorithm with an unsteady flow simulation to derive efficient flow control rules. We consider as testcase the turbulent flow over a backward facing step, including a synthetic jet actuator. the aim is to reduce the time-averaged recirculation length behind the step by optimizing the jet blowing/suction amplitude and frequency. the Unsteady Reynolds- Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations are solved within a Mixed finite-Element/finite- Volume (MEV) framework using the near-wall low-Reynolds number one-equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence closure. the steady flow simulation without control is first validated by comparison with experimental and numerical data. then, the optimization method EGO (Efficient Global Optimization), based on the construction of a Gaussian surrogate model, is coupled with the solver and applied to the unsteady flow with actuation. It is shown that the time-averaged recirculation length can be shortened when suitable control parameters are used.

this work presents a fundamental solution based approach. the main integral equations for the inverse problem, that is, the Reciprocity Gap Functional, the Calderon Projector Gap and the Green's Functions, are introduced. We shown that the non one to one behavior of the inverse operator is given by the normal trace direct problem operator on the domain boundary. Some uniqueness class are discussed. An optimization formulation for the inverse problem is introduced. It is based in the minimization of a discrepancy functional formulated with two equivalents direct boundary values problems build with the splinting of the Cauchy data. A numerical experiment investigate the reconstruction of a source with a non connected support.

Direct numerical Simulations (DNS) of high Schmidt number gas transfer in a buoyant-convective flow environment (Rayleigh-Bénard) are carried out. One example of such a process is the absorption of oxygen into lakes induced by surface cooling at night. the Schmidt number in the present simulations was Sc = 500 which is equivalent to the diffusion of oxygen into water. the computational domain was 5 × 5 × 5cm3 with no-slip conditions on the top and bottom boundaries and periodic boundary conditions at the sides. the gas concentration represents a passive scalar φ = φ (x;y;z;t) which is transported through the domain by the flow field. the Boussinesq approximation was used to model the buoyant convection. A fourthorder accurate WENO-scheme has been used for scalar transport in order to aim for a high accuracy in areas of steep concentration gradients. Improvements in resolution were achieved by using a dual meshing approach where the concentration field is solved on a finer sub mesh than the velocity field. It was found that the typical spatial distance between downward plumes of cold high concentration water and the eddy size are in good agreement with experiments using a combined PIV-LIF technique for simultaneous and spatially synoptic measurements of 2D velocity and concentration fields.

Masonry structures are one of the most common housing type built all around the world. Nonetheless computational methodologies implemented in classical engineering software seem not to be adapted to fine analysis of masonry structures. the Non-Smooth Contact Dynamics method developed by JJ Moreau and M Jean (the Discrete Element Method implemented in the software LMGC90) can perform the modeling of divided media and thus seem particularly well adapted to this type of computation. this work aims to better understand the behavior of the algorithm used in the LMGC90 software in the resolution of this kind of problems. the impact on the local and global behaviors of structures are considered and discussed. Both the notion of reliability of model and the notion of quality of the simulation are focused on. this work is particularly based on the comparison between experimental and numerical results obtained with the LMGC90 software. the test consists in the modeling of a simple dry masonry structure placed on a tilting table. three interaction laws are used to model the Signorini-Coulomb condition. the stability of the wall modeled with rigid bodies is studied regarding with the influence of numerical parameters calibrating the Gauss-Seidel algorithm used to resolve such a multi-contact problem. Local behaviors are also considered as well as CPU effectiveness.

Employing a commercial code an unsteady Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (URANS) with Spalart-Allmaras as turbulence model numerical calculations were performed in order to predict the mean and velocity fluctuations fields in a rectangular channel with a lateral slot. the slot is attached to a lateral wall channel, being characterized by its deepness p and the gap width d. Simulations were performed keeping constant the slot deepness p and the length L while the gap width d was increased from 2 up to 6 mm. three test sections involving p/d ratios-12.50, 6.25 and 4.17-were studied. Main results revealed that turbulence production increases with gap dimension decreasing. Large scale structures appearance were also the target of this paper. the study showed gap width plays an important role on this issue. As the gap width was increased large scales structures could be observed farther from channel's entrance. Moreover, a kind of viscous effect in the gap was observed. As gap become very tight the frequency of coherent motions is reduced.

the estimation of statistical moments (mean, variance, etc.) is central to any robust design process. Efficient moment estimation methods are necessary and important in characterizing system output performance metrics like stress, life, etc. A key problem in such approaches is the often enormous computational time that may be required in performing numerical simulations of a model, considering the randomness in physical and numerical parameters involved in the simulation model. Sparse grid collocation approaches enable us to estimate the moments of problems with fewer function evaluations but have some drawbacks, for problems with moderate numbers of parameters(10-20). Kriging based approaches may offer a good approximation to the actual objective function, and are flexible in their implementation giving freedom in the choice of initial sample points. In this study we examine different strategies, i) to efficiently characterize the objective function f(x), with continuous random variables, using Kriging based response surface combined with optimal sample collocation designs (initial samples), ii) to perform moment estimation methods on such built-in Kriging models. For complex systems a single simulation can take a substantial amount of time and few samples can be afforded at which the deterministic simulations can be carried out. Hence building an efficient Kriging model and then estimating the moments of the Kriging response surface is encouraging and reduces the system run time in computationally intensive simulation models. the above approaches are demonstrated on mathematical problems with varying dimensionality (10-20) and strong interaction among the random variables.

Metro stations located in composed of soil and weathered rock stratum have obvious stiffness changes. Under this condition, it is necessary to divide and evaluate the covering layer reasonably before determine metro station's depth. the objective of this paper is to study the rational depth determining method of metro station in composed of soil and weathered rock stratum. Two side wall drift heading method in specific stratum was studied as the main object and Finite Element Method is used for analysis. the variations of thickness-span ratio and rockiness-span ratio are employed to investigate how the thickness of soils and rocks impact on the displacement of stratum during construction and the plastic strains of surrounding rocks and the loading condition of initial support. the sensitivities of thicknessspan ratio and rockiness-span ratio are studied. A double-index method for determining the rational depth of metro station is proposed. Study results show that in the covering layer soil and rock have different reaction to the safety of tunnel construction, the loading condition of initial support and ground deformation will be enlarged by increasing the thickness-span ratio. the safety of subsurface construction of metro station tunnel is more sensitive to rockiness-span ratio than thickness-span ratio, the double-index method should be taken in the evaluation of the covering layer.

An increasing amount of carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) replace other structural materials in aeronautics, automotive or marine applications. this has lead to an increased demand for high strength, damage tolerant and durable multi-material joints. New approaches follow the idea to set up metal to composite joints through combination of adhesive bonding and geometric interlocking. Metal to composite single-lap shear (SLS) joints were designed, manufactured and tensile tested until joint failure. Test results allow for a global understanding of the load transfer behaviour of cylinder pin reinforced metal to composite SLS joints but not for a detailed level of understanding. A mechanical based numerical model of a cylinder pin reinforced metal to composite SLS joint is presented as well as its validation with experiments. the model allows for capturing the two major joining mechanisms "form-fit" and "adhesive bonding". the first is provided through the joint geometry and pin shape, the second is considered through use of contacts and a cohesive zone formulation. the model is able to capture the loading behaviour in principle. Nevertheless, by using the experimental determined cohesive zone input data, numerical results exceed experimental results at maximum force by 25%. Variations of the cohesive zone parameters GIIc and tmax would allow for an approximation of numerical load curves towards the experiments.

Analytical model and analysis of results of numerical calculations of masonry cross vaults strengthened with FRP strips are presented in a paper. Masonry vaults and arches often need repair and strengthening because of many factors such as: material degradation, imposed displacements, and increased service loads. For this purpose FRP composites applied to the surfaces of vaults are a proper solution. Analysis of masonry vaults assumes that masonry has no tensile strength. the consequence of this assumption is that failure of a masonry vault theoretically occurs by formation of hinges transforming the vault into a mechanism. Stability under given load depends essentially on the geometry of the structure. FRP strips of length covering the whole vault depth can be, for example, applied on the vault extrados or intrados, depending on the side of potential crack opening at the hinge crosssection. the first problem in FRP reinforcement of vaults, especially when strips are glued at the intrados of the cross vault, occurs when strip is stressed in tension. It tends to lose the adhesion to masonry and tensile stresses are generated between FRP surface and the intrados surface, due to the strip curvature that follows the profile of the vault. In that case it is necessary to keep under control the debonding stress that tends to detach the strip from masonry. In the paper selected examples of numerical verification of influence of different kinds of composite strips and their location on the strength of the cross vaults are presented.
