the experimental data on reinforced concrete beams subjected to large deformations and provided with proper boundary conditions to develop arching action followed up by tensile membrane action are scarce. Moreover, so many different factors such as boundary conditions, concrete compressive strength and reinforcing ratio significantly contribute in membrane behavior of reinforced concrete beams and capturing the effects of these contributing factors by experimental studies is quite costly. Accordingly, numerical models, particularly finite element (FE) models, can be employed as a suitable alternative to experimental studies, however, modeling reinforced concrete members subjected to large displacements is a challenging task which involves both material nonlinearities (i.e. concrete cracking and crushing and yielding of steel) as well as geometrical nonlinearities. In this paper a comparative study between continuum-based and frame finite element models is presented. A nonlinear force-based frame element developed and implemented in a FORTRAN code as well as ATENA software are employed for modeling and nonlinear analysis of sample beams and one-way slabs taken from the literature. the effect of concrete cracking and crushing in both FE models are taken into account and the 1D frame model takes advantage of a nonlocal integral model to restore the objectivity of results whereas the continuum- based FE model developed in ATENA adopts the crack band approach to resolve the mesh sensitivity associated with concrete softening. the results obtained from both FE models (i.e. continuum-based and 1D frame) show a good correlation with the available experimental results, however, the continuum-based FE model cannot always restore the objectivity of results and it is more time demanding than the frame FE element model.

the flow in the near wake behind a civil aircraft Boeing 737-300 is studied numerically. the aircraft 3D-configuration includes the body (fuselage), wing, winglets, horizontal and vertical stabilizers, engine nacelles, nacelle pylons, and flap track fairings. It was designed with a high accuracy using SolidWorks soft. the height of flight was taken equal to 10 km. the aircraft attack angle was determined from the equality of the aircraft lift force and weight. Flow parameters at the exhaust duct and bypass duct exits of the turbofan engine (CFM 56-3) was found from the thermodynamic calculations. the temperature of the exhaust gas in a hot-stream core-flow was 883 K, and in a cold-stream bypass jet 236 K. the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere was 223 K. Computational simulation of flow over an aircraft and in a wake was carried out with ANSYS soft on an unstructured grid with a total number of cells of 19 million. the grid was strongly refined towards the aircraft surface and in the wake along jets and a swirling vortex sheet flowing from the wing tips. Flow was simulated on the basis of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the Menter κ - ω SST turbulence model which gives good agreement with the experimental data in aircraft drag and lift force coefficients. Simulations based on the complete Navier-Stokes equations (pseudo-DNS simulation) and the Euler equations (inviscid gas flow model) were also performed on the same grid to investigate the role of turbulent effects and to estimate the influence of "numerical viscosity" in formation of the large-scale vortex structure of the wake flow resulting from interaction between the vortex sheet flowing from the trailing edge of the wing and the exhaust jets.

In this paper we present a comparison of two different techniques for the modeling of volumetric metamaterials realized by stacked periodic surfaces, where the unit cell may contain a patch or a slot element. Both the techniques considered are based on the definition of an equivalent admittance for the single layer, however they differ in the approach used to derive the effective parameters of the metamaterial. In a first case, electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the unit cell are extracted and then substituted into the Clausius-Mossotti equations to find the bulk effective permittivity and permeability. In the second case, the interactions between adjacent layers are taken into account by exploiting the Bloch theory and the effective parameters are defined by imposing that the homogenized medium supports the same modal structure of the volumetric metamaterial.

the rigorous theory of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication of rough contacts based on homogenisation techniques is extended with the aim to include (i) the presence of not only wetted but also isolated dry contact regions, (ii) the deformation of the single asperity spikes, and (iii) periodic or even quasi-periodic roughness patterns involving several scales. the typical asymptotic two-scale approach proves sufficient to cope with these effects, but the complexity of the problem is considerably increased. Aspect (i) essentially affects the central homogenised problem as free boundaries separate the dry islands from the lubrication gap, filled with liquid/ cavitating lubricant. Issue (ii) introduces a further coupling between the scales as it modifies the lowest-order problem governing the small-scale variation of the contact pressure due to roughness. the generalisation addressed by (iii) requires a non-standard averaging as a large-scale modulation of the roughness waviness is considered. the homogenised quantities are advantageously non-dimensional with the semi-axes of the contact ellipse and the reference pressure of Hertzian contact. Specific emphasis is laid on the behaviour of the system relatively far from the associated contact ellipse and the limiting case of relatively high loads (i.e. that close to purely Hertzian conditions), so as to answer the long-standing fundamental question of the average thickness of the very thin liquid film separating the contacts in a rational manner. A numerical case study accompanies the analysis.

"Geometrically exact" elements and corotational elements are classical structural theories able to deal with beams undergoing large displacements and rotations. the former has the advantage of an exact description of the inertia forces, and the drawback of requiring ad hoc constitutive relationships. the corotational approach, on the contrary, which adopts a local, body-attached, frame to decompose the total motion of the beam, allows for allows for using existing libraries of small displacement - small strains beam finite elements without modifications on the constitutive relationships. On the other hand the description of the kinematics is only approximate, and as a consequence inertia forces are not exactly computed. In the attempt to combine geometrically exact and corotational approaches, with the aim of exploiting the advantages of both formulations and eliminating their drawbacks, in this paper a co-rotational beam finite element, developed by the research group for the study of the structural response of flexible structures, is coupled with a newly proposed procedure for the evaluation of the inertia forces. Assuming the typical viewpoint of geometrically exact models, the inertial forces of the beam are computed on the base of an exact description of the kinematics of the element and on a spatial discretization which employs only nodal variables defined in the global frame of reference of the structural problem, so avoiding approximations typically introduced by the classic corotational formulations. the issue of integration of the equations of motion is addressed taking into account the non-linear character of the element configuration space, which is due to the presence of large cross-sectional rotations. It is shown that the proposed procedure allows for a standard time stepping scheme in integrating the equations of motions, with practical advantages on the re-use of standard numerical algorithms.

Dynamic response of piles has been the subject of extensive investigations during the past few decades as in high seismicity regions pile foundation is widely used to support superstructures such as buildings, bridges and offshore platforms. In this investigation, a boundary element method is developed for the nonlinear kinematic seismic interaction of piles of arbitrary doubly symmetric simply or multiply connected constant cross section, embedded in viscoelastic foundation, undergoing moderate large deflections under general boundary conditions, taking into account the effects of rotary inertia and shear deformation by employing the concept of shear deformation coefficients. the soil deposits are modeled as a layered Winkler-type medium, while the seismic excitation motion is obtained by means of one dimensional wave propagation analysis. Five boundary value problems are formulated with respect to the transverse displacements, to the axial displacement and to two stress functions and solved using the Analog Equation Method, a BEM based method. Application of the boundary element technique yields a system of nonlinear Differential - Algebraic Equations, which is solved using an efficient time discretization scheme, from which the transverse and axial displacements are computed. the evaluation of the shear deformation coefficients is accomplished from the aforementioned stress functions using only boundary integration. the proposed model takes into account the coupling effects of bending and shear deformations along the member as well as the shear forces along the span induced by the applied axial loading. numerical examples employing recorded accelerograms of well-known earthquakes are worked out in order to illustrate the efficiency, the range of applications and wherever possible the accuracy of the developed method.

Direct numerical simulation of the unsteady separated flows of the river and sea water around a horizontally moving blunt body flows on supercomputers give us opportunity to better understand the complex transformations of the 3D vortex structures of wake with changing of the main non-dimensional parameters: Reynolds (Re) and internal Froude (Fr) numbers. the existing experimental data give us opportunity to confirm the results of our simulation at some values of Re and Fr. In the present paper the density stratified viscous fluid flows have been simulated on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) in the Boussinesq approximation (including the diffusion equation for the stratified component (salt)). the dimensionless density ? = (1 - x/(2C) + S) where x is a vertical Cartesian coordinate, C = Λ/d 1, Λ is the buoyancy scale, d is the vertical size of the body, S is a dimensionless perturbation of salinity. For solving of NSE the Splitting on physical factors Method for Incompressible Fluid flows (SMIF) with hybrid explicit finite difference scheme (secondorder accuracy in space, minimum scheme viscosity and dispersion, capable for work in wide range of Re and Fr and monotonous) has been developed and successfully applied. For the visualization of the 3D vortex structures in the wake the isosurfaces of β and λ2 have been drawing, where β is the imaginary part of the complex-conjugate eigen-values of the velocity gradient tensor G, λ2 is the second eigen-value of the S2 + ω2 tensor, where S and ω are the symmetric and antisymmetric parts of G. the classifications of the flows around a horizontally moving sphere for the homogeneous viscous fluid (? = 1) (at 1 5) and for the density stratified viscous fluid (at Re 45 the laminar-turbulent transition in the boundary layer has been investigated in details. In the stratified case the full 3D vortex structure of the viscous fluid flows around a sphere has been demonstrated at first time. the more clear transformation

In this paper we present the ongoing activities in 3D time-domain inverse scattering for biomedical applications, at University of Bristol. It is well known that 3D inverse scattering is an ill-posed nonlinear problem requiring a huge amount of computational resources. One way to reduce the computational cost is to use a coarse reconstruction mesh, which also drastically reducing the memory usage. this paper is focused on the implementation of a coarse reconstruction mesh and its impact on the image reconstruction. the method has been validated in a realistic scenario using a 3D numerical MRI based breast phantom reconstructed with different reconstruction mesh sizes.

Ultra wideband (UWB) technology in low band is promising for implant body area network. In this paper, the performance improvement of an in-body to on-body UWB communication, which corresponds to a capsule endoscope application, is investigated. We firstly analyzed the in-body to on-body propagation characteristics and proposed a two-path impulse response channel model based on finite difference time domain numerical method (FDTD) incorporated with an anatomical human model. In view of the extracted statistical characteristics of the proposed two-path model, we then employed a spatial diversity reception technique to improve the communication performance effectively. the average bit error performance was finally investigated to clarify the diversity effect with theoretical analysis and computer simulation.

this paper presents a simple active impedance evaluation of the antenna elements in uniform microstrip antenna arrays, which includes additional impedance contributing from mutual coupling effects. the mutual coupling between antenna elements has been investigated in many studies, which utilize from analytical or numerical methods such as method of moments. However, these approaches can lead to significant increase in the mathematical complexity for the desired results when the number of elements in the array increases. For this purpose, a simple technique for the extraction of active impedances of identical antenna elements in arrays is proposed, which uses simulation data of reliable electromagnetic simulation program. In the method, initially, the self-impedance of an isolated element is evaluated; then, this impedance is used initial data in the Newton-iteration approach for the calculation of active impedances of antenna elements in corporate-feed arrays.
