A technique for suppressing the sideband levels in time-modulated linear arrays (TMLA) is presented. the technique utilizes the fixed bandwidth of the radiating elements of the array to act as band-pass filters to suppress the out of band harmonics generated by the time-modulation process. the approach is combined with a new element switching sequence which is designed to redistribute the dominant harmonic components of the TMLA to predetermined frequencies which are outside the bandwidth of the array elements. the proposed technique does not require the use of complicated optimisation procedures to generate the TMLA switching sequences and is applicable to a TMLA configured to synthesize arbitrary low-sidelobe patterns. numerical results are presented to illustrate the proposed approach to by considering a 16 element array of patch antenna elements designed to provide a -30dB Chebyshev sidelobe level radiation pattern.

the paper is devoted to an identification of microscale heat transfer parameters. the numerical modeling of short-pulse laser interaction with thin metal films is considered. the hyperbolic two-temperature model describing the temporal and spatial evolution of the lattice and electrons temperatures in the irradiated metal is applied. this model consists of four equations: two equations concern the electron and lattice temperatures, the remaining equations determine the dependencies between heat fluxes and temperatures. the short-pulse laser interaction with the film is taken into account by introduction of internal volumetric heat source to the equation describing the electrons temperature. the equations concerning the electrons and lattice temperatures are joined by the coupling factor G which characterizes the energy exchange between phonons and electrons. the relations between electrons heat flux and electrons temperature and between lattice heat flux and lattice temperature contain the parameters te and tl, respectively. Parameter te is the relaxation time of free electrons in metals, parameter tl is the relaxation time in phonon collisions. the 1D problem is analyzed (heat transfer in the direction perpendicular to the thin film is taken into account). At the front surface irradiated by a laser pulse and the back surface the non-flux conditions can be accepted. the initial conditions are also assumed. the direct problem is solved by explicit scheme of finite difference method. the results of computations are partially compared with the experimental data available in literature. the inverse problem discussed here consists in the simultaneous identification of three parameters, namely coupling factor G and relaxation times te and tl. To solve such problem the electrons temperature history at the irradiated surface of thin film is taken into account. the bioinspired algorithm are used in optimization process. Design techniques for leaky-wave antennas usually require complex analysis methods for the rigorous characterization of the radiating structures as a function of the various geometrical and physical parameters involved. An increasing number of such antenna topologies are based on planar stratified configurations with suitable inclusions of periodic metallic or dielectric perturbations. the prediction of the leaky-wave parameters (i.e., phase and leakage constants, etc.) is a difficult task to achieve in an accurate and efficient fashion. In this connection, the present contribution is focused on the computational aspects related to an integral-equation approach to the problem based on a mixed-potential formulation. By means of specific asymptotic extractions, powerful acceleration techniques for the relevant scalar and dyadic Green's functions are proposed and tested for different types and dimensions of periodicity. numerical results are provided and discussed for various significant types of periodic structures.

Sheet metal forming processes are well-established in production technology for the manufacturing of large quantities. To increase the formability, the processing limit of a single forming process can be enhanced by a combination of quasi-static and high-speed forming process. the forming limits for both operations for the aluminum alloy EN AW 6082 T6 obtained via simulations and experiment are investigated in a research cooperation between the Institute of Materials Science (IW) and the Institute of Applied Mechanics (IFAM). Significant changes in forming limits with higher strain rates are indicated by the experimental results. Here, the forming limit curves move to the lower right hand side. the processes are simulated and the FLD at fracture are predicted by means of finite element analysis. the constitutive model is based on the multiplicative split of the deformation gradient. It is coupled with ductile damage and combines nonlinear kinematic and isotropic hardening. the kinematic hardening component represents a continuum extension of the classical rheological model of Armstrong Frederick kinematic hardening. the coupling of damage and viscoplasticity is carried out following the well-known concept of effective stress and the principle of strain equivalence. Using these powerful tools the simulation of dynamic effects and the prediction of forming limit diagrams at fracture shows good correlation with the experiments.

In order to develop an optimised flow configuration it is necessary to minimise drag and to increase lift. Nowadays, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are used for aerodynamic shape optimisation. In order to achieve an optimised configuration, a lot of different shape variations have to be investigated. When using CFD underlying CFD grids have to be generated or varied to represent each shape variation. Eventually many CFD grids might be necessary in order to find an optimum. Since all CFD grids shall represent different shape variations of the same initial geometrical representation, two different approaches are in use in order to provide the grids for further investigation within the optimisation process. It is possible either to creating new CFD grids out of a varied CAD dataset or to vary an existing CFD grid using mesh morphing techniques, then the CAD data base of the aerodynamic configuration is not changed. In general mesh morphing means shifting of the position of grid points in the CFD grid. Hence, the deformed mesh has the same grid cell topology as the old one. Due to advantages in regard to computational effort and time consumption, mesh morphing tools have been developed to create variations of existing meshes. We also have further developed a mesh morphing tool, as many other or tool uses radial basis functions (RBF), since they are fast and stable. RBF are used to interpolate morphing vectors on scattered data based on given control points. However by moving grid cell points within a compact cell structure it might happen that cells become distorted. this is problematic, a CFD simulation is not possible anymore, thus new CFD grids have to be generated. In order to avoid the generation of a completely new grid, a noval methodology to handle this problem has been invented and is presented.

the colloidal silica grout systems are being investigated for environmental containment barriers and ground improvement. Colloidal silica (CS) grout system behaves as a fluid but reacts after a predetermined time to form a solid, semi-solid or gel. these solid or semi-solid gels offer several orders of magnitude reduction in hydraulic conductivity in the porous media. A numerical model is developed to simulate chemical grouting into porous media by combining a groundwater flow simulation model (MODFLOW) and a 3D multi-species reactive transport model (RT3D). the methods to estimate the grout gel viscosity as a function of gel cure time (gel age), shear rate, and grout concentration are incorporated. the non-uniform gel viscosity is indirectly incorporated into MODFLOW by changing the effective hydraulic conductivity in each cell. the present model is used to analyse the experimental observations on colloidal silica grout injection into a sand column. the model was able to reproduce the observed injection pressures to a large extent. It has been shown that the shear effect needs to be incorporated in the grout gelation model. the model will help in better understanding the physics of grouting, the processes taking place and identifying the parameters. © 2012 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Many different approaches have been proposed for the efficient solution of quadratic programming (QP) problems arising in both linear and nonlinear model predictive control (MPC). this paper presents a novel online QP algorithm that aims at combining the respective advantages of existing methods. It allows for efficient hot-starts of the QP solution and exploits the parametric nature of the problem like other active-set methods. Moreover, like interiorpoint or fast gradient methods, it directly exploits the inherent sparsity of QP problems arising in MPC and is designed to be easily parallelizable. the proposed parallel active-set strategy is described in detail for MPC problems with diagonal weighting matrices that are subject to state and control bounds;also an extension to the general case is sketched. numerical properties of the proposed algorithm are discussed and preliminary numerical results are given that are based on a prototype Matlab implementation. © 2012 IFAC.

the Natural Neighbour Radial Point Interpolation Method (NNRPIM), an improved meshless method, is used in the numerical implementation of an Unconstrained third-Order Plate theory applied to laminates. the nodal connectivity and the node dependent integration background mesh are constructed resorting to the Voronoi tessellation and to the Delaunay triangulation. Within NNRPIM the obtained interpolation functions, constructed with the Radial Point Interpolators, pass through all nodes inside the influence-cell providing the interpolation functions with the delta Kronecker property. In order to prove the high accuracy and convergence rate of the proposed meshless method several well-known benchmark static and dynamic laminate examples are solved. the numerical results obtained with the NNRPIM are compared with the Unconstrained third-Order Plate theory exact solution, when available, and with exact solutions of other plate deformation theories. We consider the design of a robust ℍ∞ filter for sampled-data systems whose measurements are sampled at uncertain and nonuniform sampling instants. A discrete-time, fixed-structure filter is considered. the resulting error system is time-varying, which makes the filter design difficult. A procedure is presented to design the filter so that the error system remains asymptotically stable for all possible variations of the sampling period with an ℍ∞ performance level. the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerical examples. © 2011 IEEE.
