the ENEA Brasimone Research Centre since 1999 is strongly involved in the national and european research programmes performed in the field of heavy liquid metal technology aiming at the development of critical (LFR) and subcritical (ADS) nuclear systems. In particular, in the frame of the IP-EUROTRANS, (6th Framework Program EU), ENEA assumed the commitment to perform an integral experiment withthe aim to reproduce the primary flow path of a HLM pool-type nuclear reactor, cooled by lead bismuth eutectics (LBE). this new experimental activity, named ICE "Integral Circulation Experiment", will be performed by an appropriate test section designed to be installed in the CIRCE facility. In order to support the ICE activity, as well as characterize the natural and gas enhanced circulation flow regimes in a HLM loop, qualify test procedures and components which are nuclear relevant, a new facility was designed and built-up by Brasimone Research Centre, named NACIE "NAtural Circulation Experiment". the paper reports a detailed description of the loop and the main experimental results carried out from the natural circulation tests already performed on the NACIE loop. numerical simulations have been performed in collaboration withthe University of Pisa, adopting the RELAP5/Mod3.3 system code modified to allow for LBE as a cooling fluid. the aim of the performed post-test calculations is to compare the code response withthe experimental results under the natural circulation flow regime, allowing to qualify the adopted nodalization as well as the performance of the code when employed on HLM loop. In Europe, a major interest in the infrastructure and tunnelling fields is in the new crossings of Alps in the form of base tunnels, which are important components of the high-speed (for passengers)/high-capacity (for freight) Trans european railway corridors. these tunnels cross the mountain belt at the elevation of the main cities and basins located all around the Alps and are longer (up to 57 km) and deeper (up to 2500 m) than all tunnels constructed in the centuries before. the excavation of the first Alpine railway and road traffic tunnels could in general be carried out successfully by conventional excavation methods. Withthe great lengths of the new base tunnels, mechanised excavation by using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is imperative as it contributes significantly to savings in construction time and costs. Questions are however posed on the adoption of such a systematic tunnel construction method given the severe ground conditions which are some time anticipated along the tunnel alignment, with possible major geological hazards such as water inflow in heterogeneous fractured or karstified rock masses, stress-induced tensile failure of hard rocks, and plastic shear failure and squeezing of weak rocks, etc. this lecture is to briefly review the current state-of-the-art in the understanding and modelling of two such critical hazards as spalling/bursting and squeezing ground behaviour. Withthe present interest in the design of mechanised tunnelling with TBMs in such conditions, the complex interaction between the rock mass, the tunnel machine and its system components, and the tunnel support is studied in detail by numerical modelling. the research and development efforts presently underway withthe intention to provide the designer with a novel three-dimensional (3D) simulator of mechanised tunnel excavation are presented. Case examples are discussed with reference to the Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel design.

this paper proposes a parameter estimation method for state-space models based on the variational Bayes method. We adopt the same form of functions as the prior and posterior probability distributions so that we can be used it iteratively to obtain accurate estimation whereas the existing algorithms cannot be used iteratively. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is invariant under coordinate transformations, in the sense that the posterior probabilities of state-space models similar to each other are equivalent. Moreover, a numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Attempts to produce robust, objective, quantitative measures of similarity between antenna pattern data sets using statistical methods have been widely reported in the open literature [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. this paper presents an introduction to the physical validity and use of generalised statistical analysis along with specialist statistical image classification concepts as applied to the assessment of antenna pattern functions. Before presenting results the paper describes some of the more recent developments in the field relating to, nominal, ordinal, interval and the more usual ratio type levels of measurement data available within near-field measurement data sets. Finally the paper describes how these assessment techniques could be implemented in a formal gage repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) [6] numerical quality analysis of a measurement system.

this paper presents a control-oriented model of the magnetic flux in the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER) actuated with Electron Cyclotron Current Drive (ECCD) at different locations. the main objective of the control-oriented modeling is to derive an input/output representation of the magnetic profile written as a state-space model. the state-space model allows determination of the most suitable actuation strategies using the concept of controllability analysis. To illustrate the controllability analysis of the magnetic flux actuated at different locations, we present numerical results based on space dependent parameters obtained from the integrated modeling code CRONOS.
