the study of complex physical systems is often based on computationally intensive high-fidelity simulations. To build confidence and improve the prediction accuracy of such simulations, the impact of uncertainties on the quantities of interest must be measured. this, however, requires a computational budget that is typically a large multiple of the cost of a single calculation, and thus may become unfeasible for expensive simulation models. In this regard, multi-fidelity methods have become increasingly popular in the past decade as acceleration strategies to reduce the computational cost. these approaches are based on a hierarchy of models and attempt to leverage the relation between high- and low-fidelity levels to obtain a more accurate statistical estimator without requiring a large number of additional high-fidelity calculations. In this work, three different multi-fidelity strategies are assessed for the numerical simulation of irradiated particle-laden turbulent flow relevant to solar receiver systems. copyright © Crown copyright (2018).All right reserved.

Dams are fundamental infrastructures for energy production, flood control and agricultural-industrial sustenance. Most of them were built before the introduction of seismic regulations with no concerns about their dynamic behaviour. Nevertheless, in recent years, the international scientific community has been paying close attention to the seismic risk of existing dams. Concrete gravity dams have never failed during earthquakes, so no case studies are available and their seismic behaviour can only be explored and investigated using numerical approaches. For this reason, finite element models must be calibrated through reliable procedures to obtain a sensible result. In this scenario, measurements acquired by a monitoring system and data from in-situ tests have taken on a major role as important sources of information. methods usually employed for this purpose require a low computational burden, however they are characterised by a high level of uncertainty. Probabilistic methods may be suitable to solve this inverse problem, but they always require considerable computing power, due to the high number of analyses needed, especially when stochastic finite elements are involved. In this paper, a procedure for the model parameters calibration in a Bayesian context is proposed. the novelty of this study is the use of a proxy model replicating the mechanical behaviour of a dam, in order to reduce the computational burden. this approach also allows us to estimate the global model error. Two models, a single monolith and a complete 3D model of a large Italian dam, have been considered. After comparing the errors of different approaches, the best model simulating the observed behaviour of the dam was selected. the efficiency of the proposed methodology is also evaluated. copyright © Crown copyright (2018).All right reserved.

In the last years adjoint optimal control has been increasingly used for design and simulations in several research fields such as shape optimization problems, fluid-solid conjugate heat transfer and turbulent flows. Recently the study of Fluid-Structure Interaction problems and its control have gained popularity because of many interesting applications in engineering and biomedical fields. Fluid-structure interaction systems consist of one or more solid structures that deform by interacting with a surrounding fluid flow. FSI simulations evaluate the tensional state of the solid component and take into account the effects of the deformations on the motion of the interior fluids. In many engineering applications it is interesting to study the inverse FSI problem which aims to achieve a certain objective by changing some design parameters such as forces, boundary conditions or geometrical domain shapes. In this paper we would like to study these inverse FSI problems by using an optimal control approach based on Lagrangian multipliers and adjoint variables. In particular we propose a pressure boundary optimal control method with the purpose to control the solid behavior by changing the fluid pressure on a domain boundary. the optimality system is derived from the first order optimality condition by taking the Fréchet derivatives of the Lagrangian with respect to all the variables involved. this system is solved by using and comparing different line search methods with a finite element code with mesh-moving capabilities for the study of large solid displacements. In order to support the proposed approach we perform numerical tests where the fluid domain boundary pressure controls the displacement that occurs in a well defined region of the solid domain. the approach presented in this work is general and can be used to assess different objectives and complex geometries. copyright © Crown copyright (2018).All right reserved.

Geocell soil reinforcement method is became one of the common improvement method used in different aspects of geotechnical engineering. the experimental investigation using physical modelling is somehow complicated and needs more financial support especially when using saturated or partially saturated soil. that’s why nowadays, researchers are trying to use updated numerical methods to simulate the soil behaviour considering above conditions. In this paper, Geocell reinforcement method in embankment construction has been studied using Mohr-Coulomb model. the embankment is overlaid on two layers of soil with different moisture content conditions. the first layer beneath the embankment is a five-meter layer of dry soil and the second layer considered fully saturated soil. the results indicate that embankment reinforcement by Geocell has no significant effect on the excess pore water pressure while the settlement and stress distribution beneath the embankment is highly affected. © 2020 Institute of Physics Publishing. Mining erasable patterns from a database are for applying resources to maximize production with limited funds. Since the concept of erasable pattern mining was proposed, a manager can use it to optimize the production plan effectively. However, real applications have critical factors, such as costs or quantities of material, which traditional methods can not handle. this paper thus considers mining erasable itemsets from a product database with quantitative components. We propose an erasable itemset mining algorithm with the bit-vector manipulation method for quantitative component databases. It extracts raw materials with lower profits by analyzing the relationships between products and materials. In numerical experiments, the real-world and synthetic datasets were used to evaluate the performance in the execution time with different thresholds. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than previous work. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Additive manufacturing has proven to be a very beneficial production technology in the medical and healthcare industries. While existing for over four decades, recent work has seen great improvements in the quality of products;particularly in medical devices such as implants. Improved customization reduced operating time and increased cost-effectiveness associated with Metal AM for these products offers a new value proposition. this paper investigates and evaluates modelling methods for the zygoma bone (human jawbone) and explores the most suitable material and optimum design for this critical biomedical implant. this paper proposes an innovative and efficient pre-process methodology that includes modelling, design validation, topological optimization, and numerical analysis. the method includes the generation of the model using reverse engineering of CT scan data and a topology optimization technique which makes the implant lightweight without causing excessive stress concentration. Static structural Finite Element Analysis was conducted to test three different biocompatible materials (Ti6Al4V, stainless steel 316L and CoCr alloys) which are commonly available for metal additive manufacturing. the stresses and conditions in the analysis were that of the human mastication process and all the implant design were tested with the three material types. the Taguchi method was used to determine the optimum design which was found to result in the highest mass reduction of 25% with Ti6Al4V as the implant material. © ESAFORM 2021 - 24th Inter. thanks to its capability to provide a uniform service rate for the User Equipments (UEs), Cell-free (CF) massive Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (mMIMO), has recently attracted considerable attention, both in academia and in industry, and so is considered as one of the potential technologies for beyond –5G and 6G. However, the reuse of the same pilot signals by multiple users can create the so-called pilot contamination problem, which can hinder the CF mMIMO from unlocking its full performance. In this paper, we address the challenge by formulating the pilot assignment as a maximally diverse clustering problem and propose an efficient yet straightforward repulsive clustering-based pilot assignment scheme to mitigate the effects of pilot contamination on CF mMIMO. the numerical results show the superiority of the proposed technique compared to some other methods with respect to the achieved uplink per-user rate.

One of the main usages for a digital twin is the centralization and utilization of numerical, physics, and experimental based data. While there has been a large amount of research in the definition and utilization of computer simulations, there exists a gap in research in the interaction between experimental setups and digital twins. this work focuses on an example of how an experimental setup can interact with a digital twin via an operational platform. the experimental setup for this work is a scaled 3 storey building excited with a 6-DOF ground shaker under various controlled environmental conditions. For the digital twin, a server-based operational platform is used to allow for interactions with the digital twin from any remote operation site. the work in this paper gives an example of how the digital twin and experimental setup interacts and explores the added benefits of using a digital twin in experimental research. © 2021 COMPDYN Proceedings.

In closed-loop Ground Source Heat Pump system, the thermal exchange between the building and the subsoil is provided by ground heat exchangers inserted into the ground with a circulating heat-carrier fluid. A heat pump manages the system by regulating the fluid working temperature. When a greater heat extraction rate from the subsoil is needed, the fluid working temperature can be lowered down to −5 °C by adding anti-freezing additives. this way, the thermal alteration induced in the subsoil is more intense and can lead to freezing processes in the surrounding ground. the geotechnical properties of sediments with significant clay fraction are irreversibly affected by the occurring alterations in the internal structure and porosity distribution that are caused by the freeze-thaw cycles. A series of experimental tests have been conducted to study vertical deformations and permeability variations induced by freeze-thaw cycles in Over-Consolidated silty clays at different Over-Consolidation Ratios (OCR). Whilst in Normal-Consolidated silty clays an irreversible settlement up to 16% is gathered cycle after cycle depending on sediment plasticity, pore fluid salinity and applied load, the OC silty-clays show an opposite behavior. Experimental results point out that, in case of OC deposits, higher the OCR lower the freeze-thaw induced settlement. In case of OCR > 15, the settlement turns to a slight expansion. Conversely, the observed augment in vertical permeability increases with the OCR degree. © 2021, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Existing steel moment-resisting frames in several seismic regions worldwide are often characterised by high vulnerability to earthquakes due to insufficient local and/or global ductility. Nowadays, it is of paramount importance to assess their response under strong motions and provide cost-effective retrofitting strategies. Amongst others, the seismic behaviour of these frames is often strongly affected by the presence of masonry infills which, from one side, if adequately distributed, beneficially contribute to the seismic resistance of the structure providing stiffness and strength to the frame, from the other side often experience a brittle behaviour and are very vulnerable to seismic actions. To this end, the H2020-INFRAIA-SERA project HITFRAMES (i.e., HybrId Testing of an Existing Steel Frame with Infills under Multiple EarthquakeS) experimentally evaluated a case study building representative of non-seismically designed european steel frames with masonry infills and investigated a possible retrofit strategy. this paper takes advantage of the experimental results of the HITFRAMES project to calibrate numerical models in OpenSees of a case study building which is analysed as bare, infilled and retrofitted frame with buckling-restrained braces (BRBs). the impact of masonry infills and BRB-retrofit is investigated by comparing the response of models with different configurations. the numerical results provide some insights on the ability of BRB-retrofit option in protecting not only the steel frames from experiencing critical damage during earthquakes but also the masonry infills and on the importance of using appropriate models for the masonry infills in the assessment procedures. © 2021 COMPDYN Proceedings.
