A new innovative clay brick unit is used for the construction of partially grouted masonry walls. this new unit aims to provide both the required mechanical properties and thermal insulating properties. the behavior of masonry specimens constructed with this unit and thin mortar method under in plane loads is discussed here. the basic mechanical properties of the examined construction system are measured by a series of material tests, prism tests under combined shear and compression and wallets under compression tests. the laboratory measurements are compared with the defined by EC6 values. Following, diagonal compression tests were conducted at the Laboratory of Strength of Materials and Structures (Aristotle University of thessaloniki) to ungrouted and grouted masonry wallets with different reinforcing details employing horizontal reinforcing steel bars placed at the prefabricated holes of the clay unit. the effect of the reinforcing steel bars in the bearing capacity and in the post peak behavior is investigated. Apart from the experimental investigation, numerical models simulating these tests were developed utilizing all the geometrical properties of the specimens and the mechanical properties of the materials used. the numerically simulated behavior resembles the measured load-deformation response of the tested specimens and the observed actual damage at the end of the tests. © 2021 COMPDYN Proceedings.

In the article the problem of geotechnical application of claystone as a base of driven pile foundations has been considered. When using these foundations a compaction zone is formed in the soil space around the driven pile. the purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of compaction zones on the results of numerical calculations for predicting the settlement of a driven pile on claystones. the following tasks were solved: 1) the existing investigations of pile settlement in clays were analyzed;2) the characteristics of experimental sites and methods for testing single field piles on claystones were described;3) Calculation of single pile settlement was performed carried out by numerical methods with the use of Plaxis 3D software package;4) the experimental data were compared with the results of calculations by numerical methods. the developed calculation scheme with two compaction zones around driven piles can provides reasonable estimates of vertical displacements of the soil base. © 17th european conference on Soil Mechanics and geotechnical engineering, ECSMGE 2019 - Proceedings.

this paper describes a new set of rules to cover geotechnical design and the verification of limit states using numerical methods as developed for the final Project Team (PT) draft of the next generation of Eurocode 7 Part 1 (EN 1997-1:202x). If adopted, this would be the first geotechnical design code to include such a set of rules and reflects the growing use of numerical methods in geotechnical engineering. While the resistance factoring approach (RFA) may be used to verify adequate safety against a particular failure form occurring in relatively simple cases, the material factoring approach (MFA) is recommended for a more robust verification of all possible geotechnical ultimate limit states using numerical methods. the action effect factoring approach (EFA) applies a relatively constant safety margin to structural forces in most cases but there are some situations where lower than expected ground strength has a significant effect on structural forces and EFA would not provide adequate reliability. therefore, a dual factoring approach (MFA and EFA) is recommended where the most onerous structural forces obtained from each are used in the verification of structural ULS. Some other recommendations on the use of numerical methods contained in the redrafted EN 1997-1 are also summarised in this paper. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019.

How to extract useful and key information from the original big wave data with large volume and low information density and establish a wave climate datasets is still in a blank status, which is also urgently needed in the ocean navigation, deep sea development, marine resource development, offshore construction, and disaster prevention and mitigation, etc. Based on the ERA-interim wave data for 1979-2018 and ERA-40 wave reanalysis from the european Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), this study adopts the climate statistical analysis methods to establish the first open and public wave climate dataset for the Maritime Silk Road, systematically including the prevailing wave direction and significant wave height (SWH), wave period, swell index (SI), rough sea occurrence, wave direction occurrence, co-occurrence of wave height and wave direction, co-occurrence of wave height and wave period, and extreme wave height. It is hoped that the results can provide a data support for the safe and efficient deployment of marine development and construction. © 2020 IEEE.

this paper presents the background to the development of the second generation of Eurocode, our common european set of technical rules for structural and geotechnical design. the revision is undertaken to meet new demands in geotechnical engineering looking at the coming 20 years, e.g. design in rock, dynamics, numerical methods, probability. Furthermore, the revision is performed focusing on the users' need with the main goals of;ease-of use and harmonisation. the paper highlights the steps taken to ensure that the goals will be obtained for the primary target audience of Eurocode;practitioners - competent engineers. Finally, the paper presents an overview of some of the major changes compared to the first generation of Eurocode, that will affect the practicing geotechnical engineer. this paper presents the results of a numerical analysis – carried out by way of the academic version of the TREMURI software implementing the Equivalent Frame Method – that was aimed at generating fragility curves to be associated with existing masonry buildings resting on soils with different mechanical parameters and subjected to differential settlement scenarios. these numerical fragility curves, once validated on the basis of information concerning real cases, could represent a useful tool for decision makers and geotechnical engineers in planning/selecting/designing appropriate foundation repairing/replacing measures aimed at preventing the attainment of intolerable damage severity levels. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019

Tunnel collapses are often reported to occur during excavations or shortly afterwards, yet exca-vation stability analyses are seldom included into tunnel design documents. Available tunnel stability methods are briefly discussed, focusing on their main limitations, such as homogeneous dry soil conditions only, thus not allowing for groundwater flow seepage forces and a layered soil profile. A proposition is made on two distinct stability procedures, each recommended to be applied at different design stages: 1. A simple analytical formulation known as Caquot's model, but modified to allow for groundwater flow and multiple materials in the soil mass, and extended to simulate three dimensional geometries. 2. A three dimensional numerical model, such as a Finite Element Method. the basic assumptions and limitations of both procedures are discussed, followed by comparative evaluations against laboratory physical models. It is concluded that the straightforward analytical model is a convenient sta-bility evaluation tool;however due to a series of limitations its use should be restricted to preliminary design analyses. A three dimensional numerical method is able to overcome analytical model limitations with improved reliability, being recommended to be deployed at a detailed design stage. © 17th european conference on Soil Mechanics and geotechnical engineering, ECSMGE 2019 - Proceedings.

this research deals with the solution of geotechnical problems on intermediate length scales, i.e. when the length scale of interest is larger than the size of the grains of the soil (or rockfill) but the medium cannot be considered as a continuous body. this is because on such scales, despite the large number of involved grains, the volumetric average stress fluctuates around the mean value and the fluctuation is due to the truly discrete nature of the soil. then, the smooth stress field that would be predicted by continuum mechanics approaches is replaced by a stochastic system of interparticle forces forming force chains. the forces can be transformed into equivalent stresses by means of homogenization techniques, but the obtained fields are again non-smooth and stochastic. A classical statistical mechanics framework is followed to anticipate the probability distribution functions of equivalent (extensive) stresses according to the macroscopic constraints of the problem. In particular, we get stochastic models for two seminal problems in geotechnics: the at rest lateral earth pressure acting on a retaining wall and the vertical stress at a given point in the soil that is caused by a vertical surface load. the theory is validated through massive numerical simulation with the Discrete Element Method. Mesoscale geotechnical analysis can find its main applications in the case of rockfill or other very coarse granular materials. However, it could be useful as well for laboratory, numerical and theoretical researches that are approached on small length scales. this theoretical framework contributes to fill the gap between micro and macro geotechnics and the resulting stochastic models may be useful for reliability analyses.

Safety and quality assurance are the most important aspects for the design and the construction of geotechnical structures. these aspects consider the optimisation by reducing the resources material, money and time. For construction projects with a distinctive soil-structure interaction in the vicinity of existing structures special methods have to be applied to guarantee safety and quality. therefor numerical simulations using the Finite-Element-Method (FEM), in-situ load tests on the construction site, special foundation techniques like the Combined Pile-Raft Foundation (CPRF), the observational method and an independent peer review are necessary. the paper explains the application and the combination of these tools by examples from engineering practice.
