Several iterative procedures have been used to solve the non-linear heat diffusion equation taking into account radiation across internal cavities. Quasi-Newton methods are compared with Picard iteration and Newton-Raphson methods. Among them, the rank-one quasi-Newton update seems to be the most effective, specially in time-dependent cases.

the stress-induced transformation toughening of ZrO//2 containing ceramics is examined by means of a quantitative model. Transformed ZrO//2 inclusions are represented by pressurized, spherical holes surrounding a Griffith crack in an infinite, two-dimensional matrix. the K//I-value for a given configuration will be calculated numerically using a pertubation procedure in order to solve generalized Isida equations. Knowing K//I and the K//I//c of the matrix it is possible to predict the increase in fracture toughness of the compound. numerical errors will be estimated and the final results are compared with experimental data.
