Submarine buried pipelines may often interact with shallow layers of loose sand that are particularly prone to liquefaction. When liquefaction is triggered by environmental loading and/or mechanical vibrations, the soil tends to behave as a viscous solid-fluid mixture and the pipeline to undergo either flotation or sinking. While a few indications can be found in the literature on the triggering condition for flotation/sinking, no conclusive methods are available to estimate the displacement of the pipe when liquefaction cannot be avoided. this preliminary work shows that combining in numerical simulations fluid and soil mechanics may successfully serve such a goal. the proposed modelling approach is compared to the results of small-scale pipe flotation tests, with emphasis on existing knowledge gaps and indications for future research on the subject. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019.

A hydraulic jump that generally occurs in river or spillway is a rapid transition from supercritical to subcritical flow characterized by the development of large-scale turbulence, surface waves, energy dissipation and considerable air entrainment. the hydraulic jump is widely used as energy dissipaters in hydraulic engineering due to the high energy dissipation rate. In this study, a weakly compressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics model (WCSPH) is established to simulate the 2D hydraulic jump in open channel To test the model, two hydraulic jump cases with different inflow Froude number are simulated. the comparison between numerical conjugate depths in the subcritical section with theoretical results show generally good agreement with theory. In addition, an aeration at the jump toe can be clearly observed in numerical results with only Single-phase flow. It is proved that SPH method has unique advantages dealing with the hydraulic jumps.

For certain dynamical systems it is possible to significantly simplify the study of stability by means of the center manifold theory. this theory allows to isolate the complicated asymptotic behavior of the system close to a non-hyperbolic equilibrium point, and to obtain meaningful predictions of its behavior by analyzing a reduced dimensional problem. Since the manifold is usually not known, approximation methods are of great interest to obtain qualitative estimates. In this work, we use a data-based greedy kernel method to construct a suitable approximation of the manifold close to the equilibrium. the data are collected by repeated numerical simulation of the full system by means of a high-accuracy solver, which generates sets of discrete trajectories that are then used to construct a surrogate model of the manifold. the method is tested on different examples which show promising performance and good accuracy. © 2020, the Author(s).

Currently the brownfields are frequently used for the construction of industrial units. A designed homogenization coal deposit (HCD) has determined very strict limits for the deformation of the foundation. Since there is heterogeneous unconsolidated spoil heap with huge depths in the area, the implementation of the foundation using classic technologies will be very complicated. We have done geological investigation and field testing. We have determined several methods of feasible foundation. Individual options have been reviewed by numerical modeling using finite element method. Furthermore, the monitoring system was projected and constructed along with foundation of the HCD. Nowadays, we have more than 15 years of experience with service the HCD - thanks to continuous data from the monitoring. At this time, we are still observing this area also with numerical modeling and field tests. the field tests are repeated every 5 years, with the aim to measure the bearing capacity of bedrock vs. the stacker (loader machine). A lot of output data over a long time period, carried out field tests including numerical modeling are unique. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019.

In order to mitigate the damaged induced by liquefaction events, it is imperative to evaluate the liquefaction susceptibility. Liquefaction susceptibility can either be evaluated through the retrival and testing of intact soil samples, or through procedures based on in-situ tests. Both of these frameworks are based on equivalent stress cycles (or stress-based methods), however, other types of methods (strain based or energy based) were developed with different base principles but with the same objective of predicting liquefaction triggering. In this paper the updated version of the stress based method will be compared with a dissipated energy based method, discussing their main advantages and limitations. For that purpose, nonlinear dynamic effective stress analysis were performed using the commercial software FLAC® using PM4Sand as the selected constitutive model. Using a database of 500 numerical analysis, the liquefaction triggering obtained in both simplified methods was compared with liquefaction triggering obtained in the numerical analysis. the results show that the simplified methods tend to overpredict liquefaction in comparison with the numerical analysis. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019

the weathering of marls from Dalmatia (Croatia) is approached from the aspect of unsaturated conditions and suction through the first findings of a new scientific project dealing with experimental and numerical investigations of mechanisms in unsaturated geomaterials. this is done by connecting the reliable previous own research results obtained on flysch marls (database with approximately 1500 samples) and findings from the research concerning unsaturated materials of similar behavior and composition. the expected suction ranges and soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) shape parameters were determined and described, as well as role of matric suction and SWCC in the engineering behaviour of marl, types of degradation and parameters of significance for further research program. the results of analyzes conducted, data collected, and an overview of experimental and numerical methods suitable for further research were also given. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019.

the expansion of cities often involves tunnel construction, which may result in detrimental effects on existing structures. this paper considers the interaction between tunnelling-induced ground deformations and framed buildings on raft foundations. the aim of the paper is to study the differences between scenarios where an equivalent plate and a real frame are used in the tunnel-building interaction problem. the paper includes experimental data obtained from geotechnical centrifuge tests and predictions of building response based on numerical analyses. the centrifuge experiments involved framed building models with walls extending in the direction of the tunnel axis. Digital image analysis was used to measure soil and building displacements during simulated tunnel volume loss. Results are compared to existing data from centrifuge tests that used an equivalent plate approach. numerical simulations carried out with simplified and advanced Finite Element methods, performed respectively before (i.e class A predictions) and after (i.e. class C predictions) the centrifuge tests, are presented. Both methods effectively predict the soil and building deformation profiles determined experimentally. Finally, the potential for errors resulting from the equivalent plate approach are also discussed. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019.

With the development of urban construction, in order to alleviate the impact of foundation pit excavation on the surrounding environment, some complex support forms have been adopted. In order to reduce the risk of these supports, numerical method is a very effective method. In this paper, numerical analysis is carried out on the complex supporting form of a deep foundation pit. the supporting system structure is regarded as a whole structure by using the three-dimensional finite element method, and the space-time evolution law of the surrounding soil and structure during the foundation pit construction process is obtained. It provides an effective means for the analysis of complex supporting system of foundation pit. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

the paper describes the challenges that arise during execution and quality control of deep vibro-compaction works on land reclamation projects. the achieved relative density can be measured indirectly by performing Cone Penetration Tests (CPT). Well established empirical correlations between the cone resistance qc and the relative density ID are not suitable to reproduce the characteristics of carbonate sands, as commonly used for land reclamation projects, because these sands show significantly lower qc-values than silica sands under similar conditions. An alternative to traditional correlation methods to derive the qc-requirement is the use of the Karlsruhe Interpretation Method (KIM). this paper deals with the numerical simulation of the spherical cavity expansion problem as part of the KIM. After a short introduction to the theory of this interpretation method a curve-fitting procedure is proposed which can be used for the determination of the KIM-parameters required for the approximation of the spherical cavity expansion limit pressures. A detailed description of the FE-model to solve the spherical cavity expansion problem is presented. Further, a full KIM-analysis of a land reclamation project in Dubai using a hypoplastic constitutive model is discussed. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis is performed and a comparison of the proposed FE-model with a finite-difference code is presented. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019.

Over the last years, an increase of damage and defects on geotechnical structures has been observed during safety assessments. this is related to the rising age of these structures, sometimes a change of utilization and loads and in many it is related to a decrease of the bearing capacity. the handling and dealing with these existing structures will be a challenging task for future civil engineers. the research project „SIBS "(Safety assessment of existing retaining structures) focuses on the development and the investigation of new methods for the damage detection and safety assessment of retaining structures. the focus of this paper is to demonstrate new measurement technics and accompanying numerical investigations to determine the behavior due to the possible increase of a corrosion damage. © the authors and IGS: All rights reserved, 2019.
