To efficiently program massively parallel systems we propose to use a form of parallelism known as data parallelism along with a SPMD programming model. We describe how a sequential object oriented Language (OOL) can embed data parallelism in a clean and elegant fashion-without language extensions- to exploit the potential power of massively parallel systems. To illustrate our ideas, we present EPEE (our OOL Parallel Execution Environment) and an application of this approach to a well known parallel paradigm. After some remarks on our implementation, we show experimental performance results and draw some conclusions on the generality of this approach. © 1992 ACM.

the trend towards object-oriented software construction is becoming more and more prevalent, and parallel programming cannot be an exception. In the context of parallel computation, it is often natural to model the computation as message passing between autonomous, concurrently active objects. the problem was, as some previous studies had indicated, that the overhead from message reception to dynamic method dispatching consumes a significant amount of execution time (e.g., as much as 4000 machine cycles or 500 //seconds at 8 MHz clock for some language/hardware combination). Our ABCL/onEM-4, a software/hardware implementation architecture for a concurrent object-oriented language, overcomes this problem with technologies such as address-specifiable reactive packet-driven architecture, zero-overhead context switching, and packet-driven allocation of message boxes. Preliminary performance measurements on a real hardware EM-4 confirm our claim, achieving the performance of up to nearly 10 //seconds (130 clocks) total for a remote object-creation followed by a request message send to the created object and a reply reception from the object, for a 12.5 MHz clock speed. Our results indicate that the concurrent object-oriented computational model and languages are highly viable with proper implementational software/hardware architectures. © 1992 ACM.

A type inclusion test is a procedure to decide whether two types are related by a given subtyping relationship. An efficient implementation of the type inclusion test plays an important role in the performance of object oriented programming languages with multiple subtyping like C++, Eiffel or Java. there are well-known methods for performing fast constant time type inclusion tests that use a hierarchical bit vector encoding of the partial ordered set representing the type hierarchy. the number of instructions required by the type inclusion test is proportional to the length of those bit vectors. We present a new algorithm based on graph coloring which computes a near optimal hierarchical encoding of type hierarchies. the new algorithm improves significantly on previous results - it is faster, simpler and generates smaller bit vectors. © Springer-Verlag Berhn Heidelberg 1997.

Although concurrency is a natural consequence of objects, the standard model of objects uses sequential procedure calls. Early research in actors unifed concurrency with objects and provided a basis for use of objects in parallel and distributed systems.

the evolution of complex so are systems is promoted by software engineering principles and techniques like separation of concerns, encapsulation, stepwise refinement, and reusability of design solutions. Design patterns capture the expertise for reusable design solutions. Aspect-oriented programming is a methodology that enables the modularization of cross-cutting concerns. Traceability links designate dependencies between requirements, design, and source code. In order to support maintenance, documentation has to enable understandability by describing these issues. Descriptions have to facilitate tool support for automating documentation activities. In this paper, we use the notion of patterns, aspects and traces for a homogeneous documentation approach. We integrate various types of documentation, keep track of traces from requirements to the source code, keep design information in the source code, and generate additional design views on software systems. We have implemented these ideas as an extension to javadoc, the documentation approach used by Java. this extension can be used to automatically generate views on the design and on aspects as well as on traceability links as part of the standard javadoc system documentation.

the need to support multiple views of complex software architectures, each capturing a different aspect of the system under development, has been recognized for a long time. Even the very first object-oriented analysis/design methods such as the Booch method and OMT supported a number of different diagram types (e.g. structural, behavioral, operational) and subsequent methods such as Fusion, Kruchten's 4+1 views and the Rational Unified Process (RUP) have added many more views over time. Today's leading modeling languages such as the UML and SysML, are also oriented towards supporting different views (i.e. diagram types) each able to portray a different facets of a system's architecture. More recently, so called enterprise architecture frameworks such as the Zachman Framework, TOGAF and RM-ODP have become popular. these add a whole set of new non-functional views to the views typically emphasized in traditional software engineering environments. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

this paper describes a domain-specific software development method based on object-oriented modeling, design patterns, and code generation principles. the example domain is building simulation, however, the approach is general and may be applied to other domains as well. Patterns are used to describe how the simulation objects interact. Code-templates associated with every pattern are used to generate the final application code. the method can be applied to generate large families of customized application frameworks from variations of the models. this is particularly useful for domains where applications have to exist in individually tailored versions for every, project. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

Network-based computer environments emulating selected aspects of the physical world and allowing interaction among their human users first appeared in the late 1970s. these environments implemented a networked version of a role-playing fantasy game known as Dungeons and Dragons, hence their acronym MUD (Multi-user Dungeons). When it became obvious that many MUD users use the environment mainly to meet virtually with other users rather than to play games, new forms of MUDs and other types of emulated universes were developed and the term Virtual Environment (VE) was introduced to refer to all of them. Since their inception, VEs evolved in several interesting directions, including environments with new types of user interfaces, for example emulating visual aspects of physical reality via VRML and other means [8], and object-oriented environments known as MOOs (MUD object-oriented) allowing their users to extend the environment and communicate with it via a programming language [22]. As virtual environments became better known and more sophisticated, their user populations reached hundreds of thousands. At present, VEs are used for recreation, education [16], particularly distance education, and in work, particularly for collaboration among physically separated team members [6, 26, 36, 15, 45]. there is also a large and growing body of research on existing and potential VE uses, and several meetings similar to this workshop are held every year to address both the usage and the technical aspects of VEs. Collaborative work is, of course, an area of major interest to software developers and we will thus address this issue further.
