this paper presents a method of skeletonization for high resolution images. the proposed method is based on Delaunay triangulation to segment a shape into triangular mesh. the triangles are modified and filtered. Internal edges are rearranged such that the edge vertexes become smoothed local symmetry in the shape. Symmetric points are extracted to be skeletal junctures. they are interpolated by piecewise Bezier interpolation to form the skeletal description of a shape. Experimental results have demonstrated that the algorithm can extract smooth skeleton. the algorithm was also compared with other methods. Result has shown that the proposed method has high computational efficiency and superior performance.

the existing significant point generation technique such as convex hull is unable to find out the proper significant points for irregular shaped objects. To address this issue, an algorithm namely efficient significant point generation (ESG) has been proposed in this paper that is able to find out proper significant points which will further be used to produce required shape descriptor using parametric curve generation techniques. Experimental results confirm the superior performance of ESG algorithm over convex hull in approximating significant points for all types of irregular shaped objects.

A new approach to cancer diagnosis involves the analysis of gene expression data. However, to make sense of multidimensional DNA microarray data is a challenging task. Beyond 3 dimensions, it is very difficult for humans to make intuitive interpretation of how each data point is distributed, how they are interrelated, and how they should be categorized. Equalized orthogonal map (EOM), an approach to dimension reduction was able to produce topologically correct mappings for visualization and classification of cancer types. Performance comparison with a self-organizing map (SOM) is also discussed. Experimental results show that EOM performs well with DNA microarray data classification.

In this paper we discuss a new strategy to create ensemble of classifiers based on the multi objective evolutionary optimization. Instead of using feature selection technique which has been widely used in multi objective evolutionary approaches for ensemble generating, we have used a bagging-and-boosting-like strategy which also covers problems with lower dimensional feature spaces in which using feature selection technique may lead to ambiguous subspaces. After creating classifiers based on the amount of error created for each class, a multi-objective genetic algorithm has used to combine them to provide a set of powerful ensembles. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

Local invariant features are a powerful tool for finding correspondences between images since they are robust to cluttered background, occlusion and viewpoint changes. However, they suffer the lack of global information and fail to resolve ambiguities that can occur when an image has multiple similar regions. Considering some global information will clearly help to achieve better performances. the question is which information to use and how to use it. While previous approaches use context for description, this paper shows that better results are obtained if contextual information is included in the matching process. We compare two different methods which use context for matching and experiments show that a relaxation based approach gives better results.

Classification can be promoted by using SVM to acquire hypersurface due to the direct induction of the support vectors. In traditional SVM solution algorithms, objective function is a strictly convex unconstrained optimization problem and it is not differentiable, so it can not use the most used optimization method to solve the problem. the undifferential model could be converted into a differential one by using polynomial to approximate the plus function x + . this paper gives the procedure of using cubic spline interpolation and Hermite interpolation method to deduce the quadratic polynomial smoothing the plus function x + , it also presents a new smooth technology using circular arc polynomial. the proposed approach is experimentally evaluated in three datasets that are benchmarks for data mining applications, leading to interesting results.

A spread spectrum signal recognition can be accomplished by exploiting the particular features of modulation presented in a received signal observed in presence of noise. these modulation features are the result of slight transmitter component variations and acts as an individual signature of a transmitter. the paper describes a spread spectrum signal classification algorithm based on using the Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD), noise reduction procedure with using a two- dimensional filter and the RBF neural network probability density function estimator which extracts the features vector used for the final signal classification. the numerical simulation results for the P4-coded signals are presented.

In order to deal with the small sample size (SSS) problem in linear discriminant analysis (LDA), a two-dimensional linear discriminant analysis (2DLDA) has been proposed [16, 25]. However, some discriminant information could be lost because the 2DLDA can be viewed as operating on the image rows or columns independently [24]. We know that the spatial correlation between neighbouring pixels in both vertical and horizontal directions tend to be high. this motivates us to consider other decompositions of the image. In this paper, a multi-block 2DLDA (MB2DLDA) is developed to consider the spatial correlation in which an image is decomposed into blocks of pixels where some of this local correlations could be captured when the 2DLDA is applied to the subimages instead of the whole image. Moreover, different facial regions have different degrees of importance in face recognition, so we combine the 2DLDA features of the different facial regions based on their degrees of importance. this can be done by weighting the 2DLDA feature of a block. In doing so, the verification performance is improved. We evaluate the approach on the face verification on the XM2VTS database based on a standard protocol defined in the database. the results show that the weighted MB2DLDA outperforms the 2DLDA.

A novel, modified direct method for Orthogonal Fourier-Mellin Moments (OFMMs) computation, which lacks of any factorial terms, is presented. the proposed algorithm is based on the substitution of the factorial terms by their approximate values, according to Stirling's Approximation formula. In this way, a new set of orthogonal moments, which are approximate versions of the original ones, are extracted. the approximation error introduced by the Stirling's Approximation formula is of low order and thus the resulted moments do not significantly differ from their original values. the resulted formulas are factorial free and therefore the time needed to compute the OFMMs is less than this of the conventional direct method.

Electromyogram signal is a biopotential signal that may be measured on the surface of contracting muscles representing neuromuscular activities. this signal may be utilized in various applications such as clinical diagnosis of diseased neuromuscular systems and as a measurement tool for evaluation of rehabilitation activities. Another recent application is the usage of EMG signal in design and implementation of neural controlled prosthesis hands. For this purpose appropriate features of EMG signal are required such that intended hand movements may be recognized correctly. In this work we considered a new method based on quadratic time-frequency representation namely Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) to extract required information. In the proposed approach, initially WVD coefficients for each class were calculated. Next average coefficients for all the signals in each class were obtained. then cross-WVD was found by using acquired average WVD coefficients with signals in each class and finally the number of zero crossing (ZC) of cross-WVD coefficients were utilized as suitable features. Our proposed approach provided satisfactory results with a recognition average accuracy rate of 91.3% for six classes of movements. On the other hand, for unprocessed (raw) WVD coefficients the average accuracy of the six hand movements was registered at %33.7.
