Research in protein structure and function is one of the most important subjects in modem bioinformatics and computational biology. It often uses advanced data mining and machine learning methodologies to perform prediction or patternrecognition tasks. this paper describes a new method for prediction of protein secondary structure content based on feature selection and multiple linear regression. the method develops a novel representation of primary protein sequences based on a large set of 495 features. the feature selection task performed using very large set of nearly 6,000 proteins, and tests performed on standard non-homologues protein sets confirm high quality of the developed solution. the application of feature selection and the novel representation resulted in 14-15% error rate reduction when compared to results achieved when standard representation is used. the prediction tests also show that a small set of 5-25 features is sufficient to achieve accurate prediction for both helix and strand content for non-homologous proteins.

In this paper we take our existing research into 3D surface scanning using uncoded structured light, optimized for human faces, and develop a method to record a sequence of face movements and visualise these as an animation in real time;we call this method the 3D Animation Processor (3DAP). the applications for this work include 2D and 3D face recognition, broadcast and feature film animation, and computer games production. It should be stressed that the 3D recording of facial movements in real time is a difficult problem that is attracting considerable research attention;but accurate and appealing results have so far proved elusive. We record the faces of a number of speaking subjects, process the data representing their shape and colour as it changes over time, and visualise the animated face models. We identify a particular problem in frame continuity, whereby unacceptable jumps and jitters occur in boththe shape of the face and its colour mapping, and begin to solve this problem using hole-filling and interframe interpolation. We also investigate methods of feature tagging, so that the model can be placed in a fixed coordinate system and thereby incorporated into computer generated animations.

A new sensorless condition monitoring of a submerged pump;,in a hydraulic system on the basis of motor current signature analysis is proposed. theoretical analysis and experimental verifications confirmed that the malfunctions of pump can be detected in a cost-effective and noninvasive way by employing the current of the driving electrical motor of pump as the monitoring signal. the relationship between the pump conditions' and the driving 'motor, current. are discussed first. then the monitoring strategy using intelligent patternrecognition technique particularly neural network is studied. Moreover, the experimental verifications are-conducted on a Hydraulic System Condition Monitoring Test Rig to validate the proposed monitoring method. the benefits of the proposed approach are multiple. Firstly, condition information of pump is embedded in the current signal of its driving motor and it is a sensorless and intrusive method. Secondly, it is cost-effective to perform system maintenance using this approach. Finally, the proposed method has potential use for any pump configurations driven by electrical motors.
