First system is a contour preparation with increased width of contour lines. the second one is a map of directions of brightness drops with low resolution. Both systems of features have high invariant but low discriminant properties, however joint usage of these systems allows to essentially increase invariance to aspect transformations inside one class, as well as discriminant properties among different classes. Appearance-based approach is one of popular methods for face analysis. How to describe face appearance is a key issue for appearance based face analysis. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) are two successful and well-studied linear unsupervised representation methods of face appearance. However there exist complicate nonlinear variations in real face images due to pose, illumination, expression variations and so on, so it is inadequate for PCA and ICA to describe these nonlinear relations in real face images because of their linear properties in nature. In this paper a nonlinear ICA is proposed to model face appearance, which combines the nonlinear kernel trick with ICA. First, the kernel trick is employed to project the input image data into a high-dimensional implicit feature space F with a nonlinear mapping, and then ICA is performed in F to produce nonlinear independent components of input data. We call it Kernel ICA or KICA. In the experiments, the polynomial kernel is used, and experimental results show the proposed method has an encouraging performance.

Classical alaorithms for identifying straight edges within an image, such as the Hough transform, run in O(n(2)) time which has been improved to O(nlog(2) (n)) by other heuristic algorithms. By focusing on 8-connected space rather than Euclidean space, we present a method for classifying a connected list of pixels as either straight or non-straight in constant time. We then build on this method to enable a heuristic algorithm to identify the straight edges within an image in linear time. Although the improvement from O(nlog(2)(n)) to O(n) time does not appear great we find that our algorithm is faster than others even on small images due to the large amount of data required to represent an image. As images become larger or as the number of straight edges in each image increases our improvement becomes more pronounced. Our algorithm then enables fast construction of vectorial object boundaries and medial axes which, in turn, enables efficient object recognition. We illustrate this with images from RoboCup.
