this paper is a continuation to the work in [1], in which a new algorithm for skeletonization is introduced. the algorithm given there and implemented for script and text is applied here on images like pictures, medical organs and signatures. this is very important for a lot of applications in pattern recognition, like, for example, data compression, transmission or saving. Some interesting results have been obtained and presented in this article. Comparing our results with others we can conclude that if it comes to thinning of scripts, words or sentences our method is as good as some of the latest approaches, when considering cursive script. However, when it comes to pictures, signatures or other more complicated images, our algorithm showed better and more precise results [6]. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

the aim of this paper is to study changes in the electrical activity of cellular networks when one of the most important electrical parameters, the coupling conductance, varies. We use the pancreatic islet of Langerhans as a cellular network model for the study of oscillatory electrical patterns. the isolated elements of this network, beta cells, are unable to oscillate, while they show a bursting pattern when connected through gap-junctions. Increasing coupling conductance between the elements of the networks leads to the homogeneity of the fast electrical events. We use both experimental data obtained from normal and transgenic animal cells and computational cells and networks to study the implications of coupling strength in the homogeneity of the electrical response. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

In 1992 neurophysiologists [20] found a new type of cells in areas V1 and V2 of the monkey primary visual cortex, which they called grating cells. these cells respond vigorously to a grating pattern of appropriate orientation and periodicity. three years later a computational model inspired by these findings was published [9]. the study of this paper is to create a grating cell operator that has similar response profiles as monkey grating cells have. three different databases containing a total of 338 real world images of textures are applied to the new operator to get better a insight to which natural patterns grating cells respond. Based on these images, our findings are that grating cells respond best to repetitive alternating patterns of a specific orientation. these patterns are in common human made structures, like buildings, fabrics, and tiles. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

A new training algorithm for the Fuzzy Min-Max Neural Network (FMMNN) is proposed. the FMMNN model is a powerful tool for pattern classification problems, and is perfect for hardware implementation. But the original model has several unwilling properties. Among them a serious one is how to decide the crucial training parameters. this paper proposes a recursive training algorithm to alleviate the difficulty, and improves the training procedure highly automatic. the result model is a multi-resolution combined classifier (MRCC). Experiments are made following some recent evaluation criteria known in literature, and show that compared with the original model, the MRCC has better classification performance, better adaptive learning ability and consume less computation resource.

Virtual colonoscopy or ‘colonography’ is a patient-friendly, modern screening technique for polyps. Automatic detection of polyps can serve to assist the radiologist. this paper presents a method based on clustering the principal curvatures. Via automatic polyp detection 5/6 polyps (>5 mm) were detected at the expense of 9 false positive findings per case. For visualization, the bowel surface is presented to the physician in a ‘panoramic’ way as a sequence of unfolded cubes. Conventionally, only 93% of the colon surface is available for examination. In our approach the area in view is increased to 99.8%. the unfolded cube visualization is another step to optimize polyp detection by visual examination. Experiments show a sensitivity of 10/10 (on a per patient basis) for any polyp. the specificity was 7/10. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

We deal with the problem of rule interpolation and rule extrapolation for fuzzy and possibilistic systems. Such systems are used for representing and processing vague linguistic If-then-rules, and they have been increasingly applied in the field of control engineering, pattern recognition and expert systems. the methodology of rule interpolation is required for deducing plausible conclusions from sparse (incomplete) rule bases. For this purpose the well-known fuzzy inference mechanisms have to be extended or replaced by more general ones. the methods proposed so far in the literature for rule interpolation are mainly conceived for the application to fuzzy control and miss certain logical characteristics of an inference. this serves as a motivation for looking for a more flexible method that is superior to the proposed ones with respect to its general applicability to fuzzy as well as to possibilistic systems. First, a set of axioms is proposed. With this, a definition is given for the notion of interpolation, extrapolation, linear interpolation and linear extrapolation of fuzzy rules. the axioms include all the conditions that have been of interest in the previous attempts and others which either have logical characteristics or try to capture the linearity of the interpolation. A new method for linear interpolation and extrapolation of compact fuzzy quantities of the real line is suggested and analyzed in the spirit of the given definition. the method is extended to non-linear interpolation and extrapolation. Finally, the method is extended to the general case, where the input space is n-dimensional, by using the concept of aggregation operators. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

We consider a parallel, rule-based approach for learning and recognition of pattern and objects in scenes. Classification rules for pat- tern fragments are learned with objects presented in isolation and are based on unary features of pattern parts and binary features of part relations. these rules are then applied to scenes composed of multiple objects. We present an approach that solves, at the same time, evidence combination and consistency analysis of multiple rule instantiations. Finally, we introduce an extension of our approach to the learning of dynamic patterns. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

While partial discharge (PD) pattern recognition is widely considered as an important method to test insulation degradation, the major problem encountered in recognition is to extract PD pattern features. According to the analysis to three-dimensional statistical spectrum of PD, this paper adopted fractal theory to extract PD pattern features. From designed model tests and fraction calculation results, it is shown the method in this paper is effective to extract PD pattern features which are helpful in PD pattern recognition on the base of the three-dimensional statistical spectrum.

In this paper, we consider the general problem of technical document interpretation, applied to the documents of the French Telephonic Operator, France Telecom. More precisely, we focus the content of this paper on the computation of a new set of features allowing the classification of multi-oriented and multi-scaled patterns. this set of Invariant is based on the Fourier Mellin Transform. the interests of this computation rely on the possibility to use this Fourier Mellin transform within a "filtering mode", that permits to solve the well known difficult problem of connected character recognition. In this paper, we also present an original technique allowing to compute an estimation of the orientation of each shape to be recognized. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

the gray-scale morphological Hit-or-Miss transform is theoretically invariant to vertical translation of the input function, which is analogous to gray-value shift of the input images. Designing optimal structuring elements for the Hit-or-Miss transform operator is achieved by neural network learning methodology using a shared-weight neural network (SWNN) architecture. Early stage of the neural network system performs feature extraction using the operator, while the late stage does classification. In experimental studies, this morphological feature-based neural network (MFNN) system is applied to location of human face and automatic recognition of vehicle license plate to examine the property of the operator. the results of the experimental studies show that the gray-scale morphological Hit-or-Miss transform operator is reducing the effects of lighting variation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.
