the backpropagation neural network is applied to three gauging fringe analysis applications: classification of five spherical surfaces of differing radii;classification of five real objects with surfaces of different radii of curvature;and identification of eggs according to their given commercial grades. three methods for creating test and training vectors are used, of which the fast Fourier transform demonstrated drastic reduction in the network size, while applications with relatively noise-free data are indicated for mean/standard deviation driven networks.

In this paper a new wavelet-based approach to rain patterns detection from weather-radar data is proposed. the approach exploits the physical characteristics of rainfall fields to obtain a refined description of these patterns at different scales. the detection procedure is based on a wavelet packet algorithm, followed by an intelligent strategy for multiband analysis. To provide a validation, the procedure is also compared with a classical approach, whose results are presented for an actual case study. It is shown that the proposed method is more suitable to extract meaningful information for rainfall fields tracking and studying.

An object tracking system based on a template matching approach is demonstrated. the system identifies the target and tracks a sequence of video-recorded images without losing the object by using a genetic algorithm (GA)-based learning to adapt template matching processes to environmental conditions. the adaptive GA generates templates better than fixed, random or indexed template generation techniques in terms of boththe cross-correlation score and time necessary to choose the template model. While the overload using the GA is minimal if it is not necessary to change template model, in all other cases the GA offers a better solution to the search the associated search and optimization problem than usual algorithms.

Optical music recognition (OMR) involves identifying musical symbols on a scanned sheet of music, and interpreting them so that the music can either by played by the computer, or put into a music editor. For most OMR systems, four stages can be identified: staff line identification, musical object location, musical feature classification, and musical semantics. the first three stages are greatly affected by the problem of superimposed symbols, and this paper focuses on ways in which they can deal withthis issue. By careful removal or avoidance of staff lines, and allowing for them to deviate from a straight line, the 'damage' done to symbols by staff line removal can be reduced. the next stage, matching the objects, is then designed to allow for the kinds of imperfections than can be expected both in the original image and after staff line removal, resulting in low error rates, which are necessary to make OMR a feasible technology.

Sign language is a method of communication for deaf persons. In communication using hand gesture, sign words and manual alphabets are used together. In this paper is proposed a system which recognizes Korean Sign Language (KSL). KSL is composed of Korean sign words and Korean manual alphabets continuously. To recognize meanings of continuous gestures which have no token of beginning and end, this system segments current motion states using speed and change of speed in motions and state automata. To understand the meaning of a gesture, basic component classifiers using Fuzzy Min-Max Neural Network and fuzzy logic are used. Basic elements of meaning used in this system are 14 hand directions, 23 hand postures, and 14 hand orientations. Meaning of signed gesture is interpreted using basic elements which were recognized by 3 classifiers. this system recognizes 31 Korean manual alphabets and 131 Korean signs in real-time withrecognition rate 96.7% for Korean manual alphabets and 94.3% for Korean sign words in case of excluding no recognition case.
