the unmanned operation of machine tools in manufacturing systems requires the integration of special purpose monitoring equipment. In addition to multiprocessor-based hardware, a homogeneous systems concept and software interfaces are needed. In this paper, patternrecognition methods in general purpose monitoring systems for complex monitoring tasks are suggested. Industrial vision systems must perform a variety of flexible image processing and patternrecognition tasks. Variations in lighting is a problem that commonly plagues machine vision systems when they are transferred from the pristeen surroundings of the laboratory into the more hostile environment of the factory. Some lighting variations are considerably more difficult to deal withthan others: shadows, for example. this paper discusses a lighting model which permits a simple classification of lighting variations, and image processing techniques which provide uniform vision performance under several classes of lighting variations.
