A common property of a living organism as a non equilibrium dynamic system is the self-organization including the evolution of this self-organized system through distinct consecutive stages. In this article, the properties of dynamic self-organization is examined on a primitive model of life - the oscillating Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. this system is sensitive to the changes of external conditions by dynamic reorganization of chemical waves. the generated patterns bring the information on history of the reaction evolution. We performed the pattern classification using calculation of the point information gain entropy density followed by multivariate statistical analysis. It was proved by numerous experiments that each obtained cluster is related to a unique reaction stage with characteristic concentrations of the reactants. the reliability makes this method promising for application to the recognition of stages in variety of complex systems. the results obtained via visual inspection of 6 parallel image series of the BZ reaction together with their statistical analysis approximate cell physiology during development and differentiation of tissues - a small change in the initial conditions leads to a different development of the cell population. this finding also explains a lower reproducibility of measurements of biological systems.

We consider a conjecture on lattice polytopes Q subset of R-d (the vertices are integer points) or equivalently on finite subsets S subset of Z(d), Q and S being related by Q boolean AND Z(d) = S or Q = conv(S): given the vertices of Q or the list of points of S and an integer n, the problem to determine whether there exists a (rational) polyhedron P subset of R-d with at most n faces and verifying P boolean AND Z(d) = S is decidable. In terms of computational geometry, it's a problem of polyhedral separability of S and Z(d) \ S but the infinite number of points of Z(d) \ S makes it intractable for classical algorithms. this problem of digital geometry is however very natural since it is a kind of converse of Integer Linear Programming. the conjecture is proved in dimension d = 2 and in arbitrary dimension for non hollow lattice polytopes Q [6]. the purpose of the paper is to extend the result to hollow polytopes in dimension d = 3. An important part of the work is already done in [5] but it remains three special cases for which the set of outliers can not be reduced to a finite set: planar sets, pyramids and marquees. Each case is solved with a particular method which proves the conjecture in dimension d = 3.

In this paper, we present a novel approach that assists in the task of data-parallel pattern recognition. the classification of program code into parallel patterns relies mainly in the extraction of characteristics that describe memory access operations. Our tool automatically generates static decidable memory access characterizations using a Program Expression Graph (PEG) representation of input programs. We analyze the main properties of PEGs that favor the corresponding extraction algorithm in comparison to other input representations. Additionally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method using the PolyBench kernels for the recognition of the data-parallel patterns that drive the Bones skeleton-based parallellizing compiler, targeting as case study modern embedded platforms (i.e. Keystone II and Parallella Board). © 2017 ACM.

For elderly people healthcare in ambient living environments, recognizing confusion states in an automatic and non-contact manner is essential. In this work we provide a visual approach to confusion recognition consisting of behavior monitoring and movement pattern analysis. To collect data for evaluation, we created a dataset from a search experiment. After extracting and analyzing the movement patterns, we achieved a recognition rate of 89.6% when cross-validating over different subjects and 88.9% when testing on a new set of samples. To our knowledge, we are the first to investigate confusion recognition using visual information. Our work shows that the mental confusion can be effectively recognized based on the movement pattern. © 2017, Springer international Publishing AG.

the increase of the luminosity in the High Luminosity upgrade of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) will require the use of Tracker information in the evaluation of the Level-1 trigger in order to keep the trigger rate acceptable (i. e.: < 1MHz). In order to extract the track information within the latency constraints (< 5 mu s), a custom real-time system is necessary. We developed a prototype of the main building block of this system, the pattern recognition Mezzanine (PRM) that combines custom Associative Memory ASICs with modern FPGA devices. the architecture, functionality and test results of the PRM are described in the present work.

In the present paper the investigation of the problem of reinforced concrete (r/c) buildings' seismic damage prediction is exhibited utilizing Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). More specifically, the problem is formulated and solved in terms of the pattern recognition Problem using Multilayer Feedforward Perceptron Networks (MFP). the networks are trained by the implementation of two training algorithms: the Scaled Conjugate Gradient algorithm (SCG) and the Resilient Back-Propagation algorithm (RP). the training data-set is created by means of Nonlinear Time History Analyses (NthA) of 30 r/c buildings which are subjected to 65 earthquakes. the selected buildings have different heights, structural systems and structural eccentricities, and are designed on the basis of the suggestions of Eurocodes. the damage index which is used to describe the seismic damage state of buildings is the Maximum Interstorey Drift Ratio (MIDR). In the context of the present paper the influence of the number and the combination of seismic parameters which describe the level of impact of seismic excitations on the r/c buildings is also investigated. To this end, 8 different and widely used seismic parameters are utilized. Furthermore, the influence of the number of hidden layers, the number of neurons in the hidden layers, as well as the activation functions of neurons is also examined. the generalization abilities of the optimum configured ANNs are investigated through the assessment of their performance in the case of prediction of seismic damage state of the selected buildings subjected to 16 earthquakes different from the earthquakes which are used in the creation of the training data-set. the most significant conclusion that turned out is that the ANNs can reliably classify the r/c buildings into pre-defined damage classes if they are appropriately configured.
