In recent years, several methods for gene networks (GNs) inference from expression data have been developed. Also, models of data integration (as protein-protein and protein-DNA) are nowadays broadly used to face the problem of few amount of expression data. Moreover, it is well known that biological networks conserve some topological properties. the small-world topology is a common arrangement in nature found both in biological and non-biological phenomena. However, in general this information is not used by GNs inference methods. In this work we proposed a new GNs inference algorithm that combines topological features and expression data. the algorithm outperforms the approach that uses only expression data both in accuracy and measures of recovered network.

Transposons are segments of DNA that are capable of moving from one location to another within the genome of a cell. Understanding transposon insertion-site preferences is critically important in functional genomics and gene therapy studies. It has been found that the deformability property of the local DNA structure of the integration sites, called Vstep, is of significant importance in the target-site selection process. We considered the Vstep profiles of insertion sites and developed predictors based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Support Vector Machines (SVM), and trained them with a Sleeping Beauty transposon dataset. We found that both ANN and SVM predictors are excellent in finding the most preferred regions. However, the SVM predictor outperforms the ANN predictor in recognizing preferred sites, in general. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.

there are many difficulties facing a handwritten Arabic recognition system such as unlimited variation in character shapes. this paper describes a new method for handwritten Arabic character recognition. We propose a novel efficient approach for the recognition of off-line Arabic handwritten characters. the approach is based on novel preprocessing operations, structural statistical and topological features from the main body of the character and also from the secondary components. Evaluation of the importance and accuracy of the selected features was made. Our method based on the selected features and the system was built, trained and tested by CENPRMI dataset. We used SVM (RBF) and KNN for classification to find the recognition accuracy. the proposed algorithm obtained promising results in terms of accuracy;with recognition rates of 89.2% for SVM. Compared with other related works and also our recently published work we find that our result is the highest among them. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.

this paper proposes a novel part-based character recognition method for a new topic of RMB (renminbi bank note, the paper currency used in China) serial number recognition, which is important for reducing financial crime and improving financial market stability and social security. Given an input sample, we first generate a set of local image parts using the Difference-of-Gaussians (DoG) keypoint detector. then, all of the local parts are classified by an SVM classifier to provide a confidence vector for each part. Finally, three methods are introduced to combine the recognition results of all parts. Since the serial number samples suffer from complex background, occlusion, and degradation, our part-based method takes advantage of both global and local character structure features, and offers an overall increase in robustness and reliability to the entire recognition system. Experiments conducted on a RMB serial number character database show that the test accuracy boosted from 98.90% to 99.33% by utilizing the proposed method with multiple voting based combination strategy. the part-based recognition method can also be extended to other types of banknotes, such as Euro, U.S. and Canadian dollars, or in character recognition applications with complex backgrounds. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.

To date, identifying cracks in bridges and determining bridge conditions primarily involve manual labour. Bridge inspection by human experts has some drawbacks such as the inability to physically examine all parts of the bridge, sole dependency on the expert knowledge of the bridge inspector. Moreover it requires proper training of the human resource and overall it is not cost effective. this article proposes an automatic bridge inspection approach exploiting wavelet-based image features along with Support Vector Machines for automatic detection of cracks in bridge images. A two-stage approach is followed, where in the first stage a decision is made as whether an image should undergo a pre-processing step (depending on image characteristics), and later in the second stage, wavelet features are extracted from the image using a sliding window-based technique. We obtained an overall accuracy of 92.11% while conducting experiments even on noisy and complex bridge images. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In the medical imaging applications, endoscope image is used to observe the human body. the VBW (Vogel-Breus-Weickert) model is proposed as a method to recover 3-D shape under point light source illumination and perspective projection. However, the VBW model recovers relative, not absolute, shape. Here, shape modification is introduced to recover the exact shape. Modification is applied to the output of the VBW model. First, a local brightest point is used to estimate the reflectance parameter from two images obtained with movement of the endoscope camera in depth. A Lambertian sphere image is generated using the estimated reflectance parameter and VBW model is applied for a sphere. then Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBF-NN) learning is applied. the NN implements the shape modification. NN input is the gradient parameters produced by the VBW model for the generated sphere. NN output is the true gradient parameters for the true values of the generated sphere. Here, regression analysis is introduced in comparison with the performance by NN. Depth can then be recovered using the modified gradient parameters. Performance of shape modification by NN and regression analysis was evaluated via computer simulation and real experiment. the result suggests that NN gives better performance than the regression analysis to improve the absolute size and shape of polyp. © Springer international Publishing Switzerland 2015.
