Fingerprint recognition systems are widely deployed in both government and civilian applications. But the emergence of fake fingerprints poses a new threat to privacy security. Among the numerous fingerprint vitality detection methods, the local binary pattern (LBP) is considered as one of the state-of-the-art operators. However, the local binary pattern tends to be sensitive to noise, as there are no types of filters involved in the LBP operator. Worse still, the LBP operator can not reflect these difference whether the pixel value is bigger than the threshold or equal to the threshold. So we proposed a novel fingerprint vitality detection method based on multi-scale block local ternary patterns (MBLTP). Instead of a single pixel, its computation is done based on the average value of blocks. the ternary pattern is adopted to reflect the differences between the pixels and the threshold. the experimental results in the databases of Competition on Fingerprint Liveness Detection 2011 (LivDet 2011) show its superiority.

Social network has become a very popular way for internet users to communicate and interact online. Users spend a great deal of time on famous social networks (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Sina Weibo, etc.), reading news, discussing events and posting their messages. Unfortunately, this popularity also attracts a significant amount of spammers who continuously expose malicious behaviors (e.g. post messages containing commercial topics or URLs, following a larger amount of users, etc.), leading to great inconvenience on normal users' social activities. In this paper, a supervised machine learning based spammer filtering method is proposed. We first collected a dataset from Sina Weibo that includes 30,116 users and more than 16 million messages;then, construct a labeled dataset of users and manually classify users into spammers and non-spammers;after that, abstract a set of novel features from message content and users' social behavior, and apply into SVM based spammer classifier. Our experiments show that true positive rate of spammers and non-spammers could reach 99.1% and 99.9%.

Feature extraction is critical to the success of a face recognition system. Local Binary patterns (LBP), with its different extensions, is one of the most popular texture descriptors, because of its demonstrated accuracy and efficiency. A LBP code is jointly determined by a number of local comparisons between a central pixel and its surrounding pixels. therefore even a single flipping of any comparison results will dramatically change the resulting LBP code. this paper proposes a novel feature descriptor, named Local Salient patterns (LSP), which aims to only encode the most robust local comparisons, with the largest positive or negative contrast magnitude in LBP feature representation. therefore LSP is expected to be more robust than the conventional LBP descriptor. In addition, LSP can be further extended to high order cases which explore more local relationships among multiple pixels. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that LSP outperforms the uniform LBP in most cases, when encoding using different radii and number of sampling points. LSP also achieves better performance than some advanced variants of LBP descriptors such as Local Ternary patterns (LTP). We show that multi-order LSP achieves state-of-the art face recognition performance.

In this paper we describe a novel HMM-based system for off-line handwriting recognition. We adapt successful techniques from the domains of large vocabulary speech recognition and image object recognition: moment-based image normalization, writer adaptation, discriminative feature extraction and training, and open-vocabulary recognition. We evaluate those methods and examine their cumulative effect on the recognition performance. the final system outperforms current state-of-the-art approaches on two standard evaluation corpora for English and French handwriting.

the information theory has been used for quite some time in the area of computational biology. In this paper we discuss and improve the function Entropic Profile, introduced by Vinga and Almeida in [23]. the Entropic Profiler is a function of the genomic location that captures the importance of that region with respect to the whole genome. We provide a linear time linear space algorithm called Fast Entropic Profile, as opposed to the original quadratic implementation. Moreover we propose an alternative normalization that can be also efficiently implemented. We show that Fast EP is suitable for large genomes and for the discovery of motifs with unbounded length. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Researchers have previously studied the prediction of "soft biometric" attributes such as gender and ethnicity from iris texture images. We present the results of an initial study to predict the relative age of a person from such images. We conclude that is possible to categorize iris images as representing a young or older person at levels of accuracy statistically significantly greater than random chance. this suggests that there may in fact be age-related information available in the iris texture, and motivates further study of this topic.

the number of finger vascular pattern datasets available for the research community is scarce, therefore a new finger vascular pattern dataset containing 1440 images is presented. this dataset is unique in its kind as the images are of high resolution and have a known pixel density. Furthermore this is the first dataset which contains the age, gender and handedness of the participating volunteers as meta data. the images have been captured using a custom designed capturing device. the various aspects of designing this capturing device are addressed in this paper as well. To confirm whether this new dataset is in fact an important contribution some performance figures in terms of EER of several published state-of-the-art algorithms using this new dataset and an existing dataset from the Peking University are presented. Using this new dataset EERs down to 0.4% have been achieved.

Face recognition, which is security-critical, has been widely deployed in our daily life. However, traditional face recognition technologies in practice can be spoofed easily, for example, by using a simple printed photo. In this paper, we propose a novel face liveness detection approach to counter spoofing attacks by recovering sparse 3D facial structure. Given a face video or several images captured from more than two viewpoints, we detect facial landmarks and select key frames. then, the sparse 3D facial structure can be recovered from the selected key frames. Finally, an Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier is trained to distinguish the genuine and fake faces. Compared with the previous works, the proposed method has the following advantages. First, it gives perfect liveness detection results, which meets the security requirement of face biometric systems. Second, it is independent on cameras or systems, which works well on different devices. Experiments with genuine faces versus planar photo faces and warped photo faces demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art liveness detection methods.

We formulate a novel iterative, constrained least squares technique for tracking rigid bodies. With barycentric representation of objects, we compute rigid body transformations under optical flow as iterative solutions of the optical flow constraint equation with a homogeneous, linear constraint. We show the efficacy of our method on cluttered videos. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

Spoofing attacks mainly include printing artifacts, electronic screens and ultra-realistic face masks or models. In this paper, we propose a component-based face coding approach for liveness detection. the proposed method consists of four steps: (1) locating the components of face;(2) coding the low-level features respectively for all the components;(3) deriving the high-level face representation by pooling the codes with weights derived from Fisher criterion;(4) concatenating the histograms from all components into a classifier for identification. the proposed framework makes good use of micro differences between genuine faces and fake faces. Meanwhile, the inherent appearance differences among different components are retained. Extensive experiments on three published standard databases demonstrate that the method can achieve the best liveness detection performance in three databases.
